The Occasion

Has anyone else seen this amazing band. Really talented players, dark and a little noisy, a little classic rock-y. I saw them last night, small crowd, they don't seem to get the best shows, but defintely the best new band I'v heard this year. Their CD-R is not as good as the show.

two years pass...
I just got Cannery Hours. It's a bit too samey, but less samey than the last record and generally better.

Their strength is that they're really really good at creating a certain dark, stormy kind of atmosphere - both live and on record.

OTM re: samey
i got the album before i saw them open for acid mothers temple to see what they sounded like, and kinda liked it.... so i made sure i got to southpaw while they were playing
and regretted it
seemed like they were even bored with it
although, to their credit, i thought acid mothers temple was a bore that night, and im a "big fan"

I saw them once at Rothko and they were really good - great overall stage vibe.

"All Over Idaho" is the standout track for me on the new album.

Using "really" to excess is my new worst habit - especially saying "really really"

I saw them open for AMT, and ehhh, I'm on the fence about it. I liked it but didn't love it. I think I need to hear their CD to make up my mind, and there's a lot of things I'd much rather have ahead of it.

i thought they were pretty bland when i saw them open for AMT in baltimore. they had one cool, krauty jam that took up half their set. the second half was uninspired, and sounded sometimes like a bad take on late pink floyd. id listen to the cd; maybe it was an off night.

I sort of feel like The Occasion can't quite decide what they want to be. Like petesmith said, they'd play one real nice krauty jam that I really got into, but then the next song was a really proggy Pink Floyd type ripoff that didn't interest me. Sometimes it was real noisy and the girl with the tapes did real pleasing stuff, and sometimes there was no noise. Ehh. That's why I need to hear the CD. Maybe on record they've decided what they're going to do.

three weeks pass...
Cannery Hours is growing on me -- especially since I hooked up my fancy new stereo. Incredible sounding record. And I'm getting to like the understated vocals.

ten months pass...
Their bass player told me they're not playing anymore. Which is a shame, cause I just put on Cannery Hours again for the first time in a while, and it's so fucking good.
