and this weekend i'm going in to buy Manitoba's Up In Flames. Just starting to get into electronica and would love some more nudges in the right direction. Any ideas??

Just starting to get into electronica and would love some more nudges in the right direction.

How about buying an electronica album? I don't think any you mentioned actually qualify. So, here are a few staples:

DJ Spooky vs. Freight Elevator Quartet - File Under Futurism
Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy
Underworld - Second Toughest in the Infants
µ-Ziq - Lunatic Harness
Chemical Brothers - Exit Planet Dust

Paul Cox (paul cox), Friday, 6 June 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You might like Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works' and Spiritualised's 'Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space BP'.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 June 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul, you really don't think Air is electronica? that's an interesting take. Anyway, I don't see how your list of mostly bombastic stuff synchs up with Phil's mostly mellower one. Do you really think Hard Normal Daddy fits in with that list? I'd be curious to hear your reasoning.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 6 June 2003 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't buy a single one of those albums

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 6 June 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

on the music for airports tip, check any of the kompakt pop ambient records (2001, 2002, etc.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 6 June 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul's list is pretty on the k-lame hipster tip.

I'd go with Dettinger Oasis.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 6 June 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and of course the other eno ambient albums, particularly on land

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 6 June 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

and in the vein of air, kruder & dorfmeisters the k&d sessions which is one of my major guilty pleasures as it is all things i am normally quite suspicious of (jazzy downtempo wallpaper mood food)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 6 June 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh, you're all so bitchy. K & D Sessions is a very good call.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 6 June 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem was that the term "electronica" was used. That's an evil word. By 1997, it made about as much sense as "grunge" did in 1992. I just rattled off some albums that were big at the time (all of which I still like, except for Exit Planet Dust btw).

Now, here are a couple of "real" suggestions:

Herrmann & Kleine - Our Noise
Plaid - Double Figure

Paul Cox (paul cox), Friday, 6 June 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and Static's Eject Your Mind.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Friday, 6 June 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children
Digital Jockey - Paradise and Fragment
Donna Regina - Northern Classic
Fila Brazillia - Power Clown
Erlend Oye - Unrest
Royksopp - Melody A.M.

I wonder if anyone on this board has heard that Digital Jockey album. It's just incredible.

blutroniq (blutroniq), Friday, 6 June 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

the recent Schneider TM album

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 6 June 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Based solely on that list, I'd say you need to hear Mum. Either album will do.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 June 2003 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Blue States--Nothing Changes Under the Sun
Irresistible Force--It's Tomorrow Already

oops (Oops), Friday, 6 June 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

For mellow/ambient sort of electronic music, these records are a good starting point...

Ultramarine - Every Man and Woman is a Star
William Orbit - Strange Cargo III
Biosphere - Patashnik
Baked Beans - Bean Me Up Scotty
Mouse on Mars - Instrumentals
Pole - R

...but these are of course just the indie end of things (actually, this whole thread is). Hopefully you get into the broader scope of electronic music after a while.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 6 June 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Dorine Muraille 'Mani' (Fat Cat)

A truly mesmerising thing of ambient folktronic beauty. My album of the year.

Momus (Momus), Friday, 6 June 2003 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night, as part of a collection of video art, I saw some videos for a band called Mum. I think they would fit in there nicely. Kind of bleepy, glitchy screengazer with etherial Cocteau Twins type gurlie vocals. Don't know the name of their album, but they're on Fat Cat. (I'm probably going to buy something of theirs next time I go shopping.)

kate (kate), Friday, 6 June 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if anyone on this board has heard that Digital Jockey album. It's just incredible.

i might've. i certainly own a digital jockey cd. 3 or 4 years old? jamaican singer on a few tracks?
i loved it at the time...must find it...or its new?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 6 June 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You shoudl get any / all of these wonderful things...

Finally We Are No One by Múm
Rounds / Pause / Dialogue by Four Tet
In Sides by Orbital
Rost Pocks by Mouse On Mars
Selected Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin

I cannot emphasize enough just how fucking genius Keiron Hebdon's work as Four Tet is, even if Fridge suck from time to time.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 6 June 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and...

Another Green World by Eno
Laser Guided Melodies by Spiritualized
Phaedra by Tangerine Dream
Ege Bamyasi by Can

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 6 June 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

My mistake for asking for electronica, ambient or just listing what was there would have been good enough (but hey, it was late and i wanted to post it before i forgot to do it again.) Thanks for all the suggestions and please, keep 'em coming!

Phil Dokes (sunny), Friday, 6 June 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

future sound of london - lifeforms
global communication - 76:14
biosphere - substrata
aphex twin - selected ambient works volume II
the orb - uf orb
four tet - rounds

and i back up the mum recommendations. "Finally we are no-one" was last year's best album (more song-y than the other ones i've mentioned, perhaps.)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

On the Mum tip, perhaps the most startling (meaning unexpectedly beautiful) video that was shown was for a track that was apparently a collaboration between Mum and a Japanese female singer. Did not actually catch the name of the singer, and the artist mentioned that it would not be available outside of Japane. :-(

Anyone know anything about this? Momus?

kate (kate), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

try a Future 3 album. maybe Stay With..., which is like Air + Eno's Apollo, or Like..., which is more Vespertine+Four Tet.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, i forgot to mention susuma yokota! get "sakura" now! this is the most important recommendation you will receive...

also, mu-ziq - royal astronomy.

and for something a little darker...

third eye foundation - you guys kill me
matt elliot (aka third eye foundation) - the mess we made

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you'd probably really like the Notwist album Neon Golden.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 6 June 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Slowdive -- Souvlaki or Pygmalion

Daniel Vivian, Saturday, 7 June 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck you hopeless rock fans paul cox had the best list!! the dj spooky and squarepusher both suck horribly though (i havent heard dj spooky) my recommendation is any 03 trance comp with a fashion model or cgi robots on the cover, and check to make sure it has the dave matthews remix and mad'house - like a prayer on it!! or if you still insist on being an indie pussy then at least listen to the indie acceptable daft punk and basement jaxx, theyre both aight
