Anyone heard this new Mogwai album, Happy Music for Happy People? And is Allmusic correct in saying that the songs were co-written with Jedi Mind Tricks??? That's too absurd to be true.

Oh my god! If this is true, I have a feeling I may need to clear out a space in my top-five-of-2003.

No mention of any underground hip-hop artists on album credits, and certainly no audible influence whatsoever.

this album is so boring I can't frikkin' believe it. I'd need to be inside a bong to be able to tolerate more than 1 1/2 tracks of this at any time.

I'd need to be inside a bong to be able to tolerate more than 1 1/2 tracks of this at any time.

I think that's the point, Anthony. But then, I've never been a big Mogwai fan. They're probably at the bottom of a list of bands like them. Labradford, of course, should be at the top. Now there's a band that knows ambient rock!

bought it today because i really loved the "hunted by a freak"-mp3 (mogwai goes air) that i d/l a couple of weeks ago. heard the album once and upon first listen it doesn't come across as a great or even good album, although some tunes stood out from the rest. nothing matches the sheer beauty of "hunted by a freak" though... should give it a few more spins before the final verdict, i suppose.
(the cd is "enhanced": it contains software that allows you to create your own remix of "hunted..."! haven't tried it yet, but the idea's pretty cool, i think)

Meet the new Mogwai album, same as the old Mogwai album.

Skip the album and go directly to the live show which have always been nothing less than amazing.

'Hunted By A Freak' is fantastic, one of the best things i've heard by them (tho i'm no Mogwai conoisseur by a long chalk)

Score for the Mogsters! The best one yet.

Is there anything remotely catchy on this one?

You know, like "Rage : Man" or "Year 2000 Non-Compliant Cardia"? I quite like those two songs, but pretty much everything else by Mogwai leaves me cold.

Are Mogwai the new Cocteaus, i.e. "more of the same" criticisms?

one month passes...
Picked this up yesterday, played it last night and really enjoyed it. I must go back and check Rock Action again to see if it's aged well, though I doubt it will have. They seem to have found a balance which endears them to me.

2 months further, I've come to love the album. nick's remark about them finding a balance is otm. overall, i think it's their best.

willem (willem), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

This is good to hear. I've been putting off buying this. Actually, what really persuaded me was Tori Amos nominating it for the Shortlist Prize. Er. Yeah.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it sucks. a step backwards for sure: it epitomizes the post-rock noodling mogwai gets slammed for.
