teenage kicks

Do you have a song that reminds you of the first stirrings of romantic or lustful feelings in your youthful self? When you hear a certain new wave hit, do you immediately think of your first kiss behind the boathouse by a lake in Northern Quebec on summer vacation in 1983(for example)? A little younger, did you get "turned on" by an album cover or song before you really understood what those feelings were?

I think if I repeat my "Just Like Honey" story one more time on either of these boards, I'm going to get kicks.

But, yes.

I remember putting Sebadoh's 'Willing To Wait' on repeat and thinking about translating the lyrics in French and say them to this girl I had a massive crush on.

We've kind of done this before, on the When was the first time sex matteredthread. As I said there, the whole idea of adolescents being sexual awakened makes me feel ill, so I shan't be contributing here.

Oddly enough, the rather obscure Alton Ellis "Picture Was you " , which I always thought was bob marley until Napster told me otherwise.

"Build Me Up Buttercup"

First album cover turn ons: Shocking Blue's American debut, the singer Mariska looked so busty. Then I switched gears when I laid my eyes on Mitch Ryder shirtless on the cover of The Detroit Memphis Experiment.

This'll sound desperately sad... probably Leonard Cohen's first album. It reminds me so strongly of the first summer I fell in love and gazing out of my bedroom window into nothingness... gorgeous hangovers... pot noodles and Marlboro cigarettes... you know the kind of thing... or maybe not. Anyway, it was all to do with romance rather than sex.

U2, Zooropa. I bought it the day it came out while on my lunch break (I was working at a mall then), and listened to it on headphones. That night I went on my first-ever date; I'm a late bloomer--I was 18, it was the summer after I graduated high school. Nothing particularly sexual happened that night but driving to a movie theater in outer St. Paul on a beautiful clear day with the sky spread out and that album playing on her car stereo is something I'll carry with me to my grave.
