Now that's a brilliant out-of-nowhere moment of music

Like right now, when I was hearing "The Town I Live In" by Jackie Lee (thanks Arthur!) and the final words are perfect 'the song is over but we have to end it somehow!' weirdness:

"There's seven hundred brand new houses
And lots of brand new primary schools!
Etcetera, etcetera!
La la la la la la!"

All over soaring needs-to-be-a-big-mid-sixties-UK-pop-hit music. It invents Moz on "Sweet and Tender Hooligan" (he HAS to be a fan) twenty years early. So what's your favorite recent choice anyway? (I'm sure there are similar threads, so this is the June 2003 version.)

My fave recent choice for this would have to be hearing Martin Tetreault literally dropping records onto his turntables during an improv set with Martin Ng, Marina Rosenfeld, and Philip Jeck at Mutek 2003. First of all, it just looked cool and it's a really ballsy move and secondly, it just worked in the context of their set. It was very much a "My ears are hearing something completely new and mindblowing" moment. (Mutek as a whole was amazing, too)

Martin Tétreault is such a nut.

(I didn't get around to seeing any MUTEK shows at all though myself)

Busta Rhymes' appearance on ATCQ's "Scenario" to thread

I was listening to Apples (in Stereo)'s "Silver Chain" just now and marvelling at the moment when that circular chord progression -- the same one that's been around since the intro -- gradually blooms into layer-upon-layer of wordless vocal ba-ba-ba's.

("Gradually" ==> more of a process than a moment, I guess)

I always loved that "error" on The Fall's "Paint work" when sombody mistakly taped over the middle of the begining of the track just as MES says "Chest scars portrayed Aztec life in his horrible..." kinda mystifys the hypnotism of the track even more.

I like the bit on 'Dem Lotts Ere Now' (Sticky Remix) where the music stops and the guy goes "Oi come ere! Ave u erd the new remix by dem lott and sticky" and another guy in a worried voice goes "er er what remix by dem lott and sticky??". "This fucking remix!". Genius.

I always really liked the part in "I Saw Her Again" by the Mamas and the Papas when just as they are about to come back from an instrumental break into the chorus - someone sings "I Saw Her..." a bar early and unaccompanied by any other voices. And it really works - obviously - they left it in, since they could have pulled it out pretty easily, I imagine...

The second part is the last turnaround in Sacre' Charlemange by France Gall - when she finishes the last weirdo call and response bridge and the song comes back into the final choruses - I swear I still get the shivers when I hear that...

Halfway through Slow Jam by Four Tet he squeaks a dog's toy. It's very cool.

yes, another one of those completely out of place moments that just works. I cannot stop listening to that Four Tet lp...

Another thumbs-up for the squeak toy in "Slow Jam" -- it's like the cuteness factor of a rathergood.com kittens video, achieved by purely audio means.
