  • calling Gravity style hardcore "screamo." (Preemptive Colin Meeder to thread!)
  • saying that bands like the Blood Brothers (yes!), At the Drive In (maybe) and Thursday (no!) were influenced by Gravity-style hardcore.
  • Picking the following as best Gravity releases:

    1. The second (?) Antioch Arrow album (EP?)
    2. The Heroin LP
    3. The Born Against / Universal Order of Armageddon split 7"

  • remarked on a photo of Justin Pearson (of The Locust) at the last Heroin show; did not explain who Justin Pearson was
    LOLZ!

weird. great label though.

i sold my John Henry West 7" for $100.

but aside from that i have every Gravity record up till the Man is The Bastard LP.

Best stuff not mentioned above: Lava 7", Young Ginns 7", Second Story Window LP, Heroin 7", Angel Hair LP and 7", Huggy Bear 7"

ADMINS: FIX TOPIC SPELLING

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

fix it yrself

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 9 June 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

add Clikatat Ikatowi to the list. great band. i don't know about the "screamo" part, but the most important part about Gravity was saving punk from itself, shattering a genre gone stodgy with a liberal sprinkling of not not being confined by the genre,

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 9 June 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget vermin scum/ vermiform (eg: sleeping body 7") which mines a smilar vein, and the more overtly 'emo' council records (home of current, ordination of aaron, ottowa etc) which was also pretty consistent for a while.

otherwise i'd recommend/make links to: mohinder/stumpy (anything), nuzzle (first 2 7"s), indian summer (first 7"), elements of need, native nod and from a uk perspective: bob tilton, baby harp seal, kitchener etc etc

ps: at the drive in are almost a 'perfect' amalagamation of many of these bands: big hair, tight/short trousers, screaming, falling over etc, but with obscene diminishing returns (eg: 30 seconds into any one song you realise its a pastiche)

matthew burrows (wretcheded matt), Monday, 9 June 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

You might as well check out the catalogs of GSL and Three One G which are Gravity alumni labels.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(Jess is grumpy!)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

but 31g and gsl are shitty labels

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

gsl is spotty at best -- some of the only keepers being gogogoairheart, the VSS and Vaz (ex-Hammerhead), whose first for GSL, second album comes out next month. Also the Subtitle ep was pretty good. Other thant that, bleh.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't remember a single gsl record aside from the vss ep collection and yet for a few minutes in 1998-9 they were being touted as the biggest thing since sliced bread

31g bored the fuck outta me...die justin pearson die

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

VSS - Nervous Circuits is good, yes? Where do I find it?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Very good indeed. Where it would be found, I'm not sure...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

fsck!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The Swing Kids (31G, right?) had definite moments, as do Camera Obscura. I like the Locust disc on GSL too.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

oh right, the locust lp

jon the vss album was on honey bear (the guy from j church's label)...not sure if its still in print, but if it is you should be able to order it direct (plz note my info is about 3-4 years old now.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

also, melt banana / locust / aor / unbroken

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Convocation Of...'s only good record (the first one) was on GSL. There were a couple of other good records on that label besides that and the VSS stuff. Not that I can remember what any of them are so, uh, I'm probably wrong.

But it's true, neither GSL nor 31G are very good compared to Gravity.

(And the record store where I worked got in copies of Nervous Circuits in the last 9 months, so I think distributors may still have copies...)

die9o (dhadis), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Convocation Of... remix record was OK IIRC.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't think of a single 90s "indie" label which meant more to me than gravity, surely the greatest run of records (up to the rapture 12" at least) in that decade

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 9 June 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what he said.

die9o (dhadis), Monday, 9 June 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I was kinda hoping the VSS wouldn't date too badly, but I gave both releases a listen, and I just couldn't deal with it. In order to cleanse myself, I put on Killing Joke's "What's THIS For..." and Antioch Arrow's "Gems of Masochism" instead...

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yea is "Gems of Masochism" OOP?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 9 June 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

amazing videos of Antioch Arrow.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

the AP article ... I'll bet Aaron Burgess wrote it

mosurock (mosurock), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

GSL is a pretty awful label, I must say. I imagine the Vaz record will be pretty decent, but besides the Mohinder reissue, everything they have out now is pretty crap.

31G isn't nearly as bad as GSL--Arab on Radar singles collection, Swing Kids records, Unbroken records... well, I guess that sort of makes the point, then, if the only good records on a label are reissues or just plain old.

Gravity.. oh Gravity Records, I love you Gravity Records. Surely we can all agree that the Heroin LP is the best release; beyond that I'd say Clikatat's LP, the Lava 7", Black Dice 7" and the Monorchid 7" are very awesome. Avoid the Get Hustle 7" and the Tristeza EP. Also, the Men's Recovery Project 7" is good, but nowhere near the bizarreness they would later achieve.

Ian Johnson, Monday, 16 June 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

1. heroin cd (lp was on vermiform wunnit? or maybe a split?)
2. clikitat live lp
3. first antioch arrow 12"
4. mens recovery project 7"
5. uoa 12"
6. mohinder 7"
7. monorchid 7"
8. man is the bastard lp
9. angel hair 7"
10. evergreen 7"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 June 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, replace the evergreen with the born against/uoa 7"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 June 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess likes Evergreen and is therefore an emodork.

Actually, I almost bought that Evergreen 7" a few days ago, but I got a Frail 7" 'cause it was harder to find. Is the Evergreen 7" on Gravity better or worse than the one on Wrenched, which I have?

Ian Johnson, Monday, 16 June 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno. there were two "evergreen"s weren't there? one was the emo evergreen with the gravity 7" and the other was doing a more gang of four-ish thing. or were they the same band?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 16 June 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There were indeed two evergreen's; the emo evergreen put out two 7"s (Wrenched & Gravity) and also an LP (on god knows what label). I've only heard the other evergreen by accident, so I don't know anything at all about them.

Ian Johnson, Monday, 16 June 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

hi britt walford played drums in the "other" evergreen kthxbye

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 June 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

the "other" evergreen is such a bone of contention with the dyed-hair set. they are clearly the superior band, and kids I knew who grew up seeing them in Louisville said that the album was a pale comparison to what that band could do live. I don't think they ever played out of that town.

whatever. that record is in my top 3 favorite records of the 90s. joy division + the wipers + american swamps + diner food = evergreen.

mosurock (mosurock), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Antioch Arrow is better than Heroin.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we show a little love for the Crom-Tech 12"? Maybe the last truly excellent record Gravity released....amazing that AP has a Gravity article NOW and not, say, 1994 or 1995....

Joe Gross, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

jess, yr list is pretty much perfect in content and order....

Joe Gross, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yea, I like Crom Tech! Aren't they singing in their own language? Fuck Sigur Ros! Orthrelm's sameyness disappoints.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 05:43 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...

This is a very odd thread but it bigs up Bob Tilton so I'm tight with it

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 24 December 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I've just realised that this has been revived at the hands of a retard

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 24 December 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

kids I knew who grew up seeing them in Louisville said that the album was a pale comparison to what that band could do live. I don't think they ever played out of that town.
I saw them play in Chicago. They closed for Tammy & the Amps, and the singer "fought" an plant/stooge on stage. They were indeed much, much better live than on record (and better on their 7" (on Carrot Top(?)) than on their lp (on Temporary Residence (and produced by James Murphy (!))). And I still play those records once in a while, because they're kind of good.
