But Julie Covington didn't write it. Andrew Lloyd Webber or somebody did... who wrote the musical Evita?

Lloyd Webber wrote the music, Tim Rice wrote the lyrics. IIRC Julie Covington sang the first single release but I have a feeling she didn't play Eva in the orginal production, i.e. she wasn't the first singer to tackle it.

Lloyd Webber was MUCH better when he was working with Tim Rice. Tim Rice was an astonishingly clever lyricist.

The Evita LP set (& accopmanying 45 issues) was released before the theatre production was staged. Julie Covington sang it first, on vinyl; I think Elaine Paige was the first theatrical Eva, yes? She was only 18 or something when she got the part.

You can now add Tina Arena to the list of singers. I watched her on the French TV on Saturday 8 June and no one could sing it better.
