That is, if we want to have a legitimate debate with the idiots. If we're just here to bash both Buffet and the Parrotminds, then fuck it - let it continue...

I read one of his books once, and it was horrible! I can't believe I did that.

my dad likes him, and my dad is cool because not only does he like jimmy buffett, but he also likes deep purple and led zeppelin. by that logic he should still be smoking large amounts of marijuana, but to my knowledge that is not the case.

I think, after he sings that lyric, the crowd shouts, "Salt! Salt! Salt!" and the lights guy flashes 'em real bright on the audience.

BTW, scary cult of fans? I'm sure he has his devotees like anybody else (one of my coworkers, given the chance, will wax on at a pleasant length about how great and underrated his entire catalog is - interestingly System of a Down is the other band he does this with), but the first post to the thread nailed it, I thought - by and large, his fans are casual, right? It's hard for me to imagine listening to Jimmy Buffett and getting really worked up about it; the whole point is to take it easy and roast some weenies on the houseboat's miniature propane grill or whatever. And for that, his stuff is truly without peer.

Fight over "Margaritaville" leaves GI dead in SteamboatBy Howard PankratzThe Denver Post
Posted: 01/05/2009 06:06:07 PM MSTUpdated: 01/05/2009 06:32:26 PM MST
An Army sergeant who offended two patrons of a Steamboat Springs sports bar when he played one of his favorite Jimmy Buffett songs, "Margaritaville," has died of the beating inflicted by the pair, authorities said today.
Sgt. 1st Class Richard Lopez, 37, of Fayetteville, N.C., died at 4:16 a.m. Monday at Denver Health Medical Center, according to Steamboat Springs Police Capt. Joel Rae.
Rae said Steamboat police have an ongoing "homicide" investigation into the incident and that the two men who allegedly assaulted Lopez are classified as "suspects."
The dispute began, said Rae, when Lopez played the song on a jukebox in the Tap House Sports Grill late Thursday night.
Lopez's relatives told The Denver Post that the song selected by Lopez was Buffett's "Margaritaville."
Rae said Lopez was obviously enjoying the song and that upset the two other patrons. The pair — whose names were not released — made disparaging remarks about the song's selection, and the argument escalated on the street near the bar.
A fight erupted between one group, composed of Lopez and brothers Timothy and Wes Mottlau, and the second group composed of the two men originally offended by the song, said Rae.
At about 12:10 a.m. Friday, Steamboat Springs police responded to multiple 911 calls and arrived at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Seventh Street, where the fight occurred, said Rae.
Lopez was immediately taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and then airlifted to Denver.
Rae said the Mottlau brothers, both friends of Lopez, grew up in Steamboat. He said that Wes Mottlau also is in the Army and was living in Fayetteville, N.C. He said Timothy Mottlau is in the Navy.
Rae declined to say where the two suspects are from, but they are not from Steamboat. He said they have left the Steamboat area and that they have hired a lawyer.

It's not hard to find someone taking a moment from their work at the office to dream about the life that Buffett portrays in his music. Who wouldn't rather be on the beach holding a cococnut in their hands while listening to aquamarine waves massaging the sands? This is the world that Jimmy Buffett takes his listeners to in an "aw shucks" sort of way, and it's no wonder that there's such a large segment of the population that wants to get in on that.
Jimmy Buffett's the answer to a great SNL trivia question btw, "Who's the only performer to have played his set while wearing a cast?"
(He played "Son of a Son of a Sailor", fwiw.)

lol no that's some picture of Jimmy Buffett I found. I was trying to do an image search of him with the cast on his leg, but no luck. He is sitting down though!
I don't think you're ever going to hear Larry David speak favorably about his experience on SNL any time soon either. ;-)

I wouldn't hold a coconut and all that stupid shit if you paid me ten million dollars to do it. I don't hate the guy, but some people are obsessed to the point that this is all they listen to. I do know that if you play ten hours of Jimmy Buffett CDs, you will hear some good songs.
