Classic or Dud: Jimmy Buffett and his scary cult of Parrothead Minions.

A google search of ILM has not shown any serious Classic or Dud/Search and Destroy/Taking Sides action centered around Jimmy Buffett.
This thread is here to rectify that oversight.
So....
Jimmy Buffett: Joyfully sunny purveyor of eccentric carribean country-pop...or vacuous ninny mixing the least appetizing bits of James Taylor and George Benson?
For a taking sides: I guess you can pit him against...um, Warren Zevon?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 9 June 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really a classic, but convenient in that if you ever wanted to destroy the entire population of 12-cd owning, going to concerts to drink/be nostalgic about lost youth instead of listening to music, hawaiin-shirt-wearing aging yuppies and rednecks, all you would have to do is follow Buffett on tour with an armory of nukes large enough to destroy each venue (you'd think they'd catch on after the first couple of nuked shows, but they're too excited about drunkenly singing along to "Margaritaville" to resist).

I really really really hope some Parrotheads find this thread and start posting hate mail, like on the DMB thread.

This might help.

Nope. It's not working. Anyone have any suggestions for alerting the Parrotheads to this thread?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My husband knew him slightly when they were both living in Coconut Grove. They hated each other, but my husband won't say why.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, then, yer husband will just have to post a "shocking exposé" on the vile horror that is Jimmy Buffett to the forum.

As a writer of pop songs/melodies I think Buffett is pretty underestimated by people who think/write about pop music

Or, maybe here, too.

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Now, I fucking hate Jimmy Buffet almost as I hate his fans.. No.. I totally fucking hate all of his fans more than just about anything.. My point was going to be that we should talk about hhow much we hate Jimmy Buffet's music - and leave the dumbshit fans out of it... what I mean to say is, give the man more credit than the assholes he attracts.. (At least he's taking their money. Buffet & Barnum are both from Florida.)

That is, if we want to have a legitimate debate with the idiots. If we're just here to bash both Buffet and the Parrotminds, then fuck it - let it continue...

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(Man, I hate it when I typo in a holier-than-thou diatribe.)

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I only put the phrase "Parrothead Minions" in the thread title because I liked how it sounded.
Anyhow: MY Opinion...
About his music: I actually own a copy of his greatest hits...and I actually do play it. And in my top 100 fave rekkids, it around #101. His lyrics are borderline clever, his music is quite interesting (espeically if you approach it as "country and western" instead of rock); Though all I have to base my opinion on is 18 songs out of a possible, what, 6 million...I'm actually leaning more toward classic.
About his fans: I only know one Parrothead. An aunt who I always end up in completely pointless arguments with. Oddly enough, she's actually a painfully prim and proper society woman, and not the boozy slacker in a grubby Hawaiian shirt that the stereotype demands.

Jimmy Buffet == rum + sunshine + Calypso + Country + John Mayer?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Against my better judgement, let me say that Jimmy Buffett has probably written some great songs and has a knack for easy unforced melodies.

He is THE BEACH BUM as mythic figure.

I read one of his books once, and it was horrible! I can't believe I did that.

Were they Saucy Rock Novels, though?

kate (kate), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It's funny cuz last week I was listening the radio and "Margaritaville" came on and I thought to myself, "I wonder if he ever got sick of playing that song at concerts?" Because he must've had to do it a billion times or something.

It was sort of a bad mystery type book set in key west and the caribbean, although the book's namesake was a kidnapped rock star (I think?). I do remember one character was a seaplane pilot, and also that jet skis were used as a metaphor for all that's bad in the world.

I'm reluctant to call him classic, but I do love the guy... Same chord progressions in every song, goofy lyrics, genuinely fun guy. He's more popular than he probably has a right to be, but I won't resent him for it. He makes me happy, so for that I'll give him the classic.

i'm pretty sick of "margaritaville" karaoke. does everyone do the "where's the salt, where's the motherfucking salt" shoutalong after "looking for my lost shaker of salt"? or is that just a maine thing? or do i just go to the wrong karaoke nights? probably...

my dad likes him, and my dad is cool because not only does he like jimmy buffett, but he also likes deep purple and led zeppelin. by that logic he should still be smoking large amounts of marijuana, but to my knowledge that is not the case.

Emily B (Emily B), Friday, 26 May 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

Time to get him started.

I think, after he sings that lyric, the crowd shouts, "Salt! Salt! Salt!" and the lights guy flashes 'em real bright on the audience.

My Bahamanian(?) roomate's grandmother was the purveyor of the original "cheeseburger in paradise." So...there's that.

The Giant Mechanical Ant (The Giant Mechanical Ant), Friday, 26 May 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Buffett's greatest hits is pretty much wall-to-wall great, with "Cheeseburger," "Pencil-Thin Mustache," and "Son of a Son of a Sailor" taking the top honors. Haven't ever been remotely bothered to check out any of his albums. Are any of them any good?

BTW, scary cult of fans? I'm sure he has his devotees like anybody else (one of my coworkers, given the chance, will wax on at a pleasant length about how great and underrated his entire catalog is - interestingly System of a Down is the other band he does this with), but the first post to the thread nailed it, I thought - by and large, his fans are casual, right? It's hard for me to imagine listening to Jimmy Buffett and getting really worked up about it; the whole point is to take it easy and roast some weenies on the houseboat's miniature propane grill or whatever. And for that, his stuff is truly without peer.

Fight over "Margaritaville" leaves GI dead in Steamboat
By Howard Pankratz
The Denver Post

Posted: 01/05/2009 06:06:07 PM MST
Updated: 01/05/2009 06:32:26 PM MST

An Army sergeant who offended two patrons of a Steamboat Springs sports bar when he played one of his favorite Jimmy Buffett songs, "Margaritaville," has died of the beating inflicted by the pair, authorities said today.

Sgt. 1st Class Richard Lopez, 37, of Fayetteville, N.C., died at 4:16 a.m. Monday at Denver Health Medical Center, according to Steamboat Springs Police Capt. Joel Rae.

Rae said Steamboat police have an ongoing "homicide" investigation into the incident and that the two men who allegedly assaulted Lopez are classified as "suspects."

The dispute began, said Rae, when Lopez played the song on a jukebox in the Tap House Sports Grill late Thursday night.

Lopez's relatives told The Denver Post that the song selected by Lopez was Buffett's "Margaritaville."

Rae said Lopez was obviously enjoying the song and that upset the two other patrons. The pair — whose names were not released — made disparaging remarks about the song's selection, and the argument escalated on the street near the bar.

A fight erupted between one group, composed of Lopez and brothers Timothy and Wes Mottlau, and the second group composed of the two men originally offended by the song, said Rae.

At about 12:10 a.m. Friday, Steamboat Springs police responded to multiple 911 calls and arrived at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Seventh Street, where the fight occurred, said Rae.

Lopez was immediately taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center and then airlifted to Denver.

Rae said the Mottlau brothers, both friends of Lopez, grew up in Steamboat. He said that Wes Mottlau also is in the Army and was living in Fayetteville, N.C. He said Timothy Mottlau is in the Navy.

Rae declined to say where the two suspects are from, but they are not from Steamboat. He said they have left the Steamboat area and that they have hired a lawyer.

three weeks pass...

It's not hard to find someone taking a moment from their work at the office to dream about the life that Buffett portrays in his music. Who wouldn't rather be on the beach holding a cococnut in their hands while listening to aquamarine waves massaging the sands? This is the world that Jimmy Buffett takes his listeners to in an "aw shucks" sort of way, and it's no wonder that there's such a large segment of the population that wants to get in on that.

Jimmy Buffett's the answer to a great SNL trivia question btw, "Who's the only performer to have played his set while wearing a cast?"

(He played "Son of a Son of a Sailor", fwiw.)

lol no that's some picture of Jimmy Buffett I found. I was trying to do an image search of him with the cast on his leg, but no luck. He is sitting down though!

I don't think you're ever going to hear Larry David speak favorably about his experience on SNL any time soon either. ;-)

I wouldn't hold a coconut and all that stupid shit if you paid me ten million dollars to do it. I don't hate the guy, but some people are obsessed to the point that this is all they listen to. I do know that if you play ten hours of Jimmy Buffett CDs, you will hear some good songs.
