Crystal Waters "Gypsy Woman"

ITNOATIH why is this always overlooked in "worst song ever"/"most appalling garbage ever inflicted"/"song that makes you want to kill someone" etc threads? If it's an act of mass voluntary amnesia then I can understand. Just heard it this morning, good god. Linda Perry, come back all is...actually no that's going too far

A homeless person accosted me on the subway tonight, and asked me for "some money to get a slice of pizza." People have been hitting me up for money a lot lately, neighborhood scam artists who've decided I look like an easy mark, and the truth is I never ever give anybody anything. I mumbled "no, sorry, I don't do that," and that was the end of the transaction, until a church lady sitting on the other side of me opened her purse, pulled out two dollars, and reached right across me to make SURE I knew she was giving the man this great charitable contribution. The rest of the ride was very awkward.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they do that thing over there where they cover themselves in blood and say "I've been in an accident, I need money to get to the hospital?" Really stupid when they do it in the same location every day.

dave q, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, pretty much

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i quite like it

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

how did you manage to hear 'Gypsy Woman' this morning tho? are you listening to Kiss FM or, erm, Radio 2?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

This is one of the greatest songs ever, Dave.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it too.

Paul R (paul R), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's great. 100% Pure Love was better, though.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Edward speaks TRUTH

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I like this track. I have been feverishly programming organ patches on my DX100 waiting for this music to come back!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

if it was an indie rock song everybody'd be all "oh Jesus self-righteous indie-rock band get the f*ck off your high horse" etc

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I just find the chorus irritating. It was designed by Satan's henchgophers.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason my fake meta-tag at the end of that didn't come through which was kind of important, it was "bracket-slash-troll-bracket"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

If it was an indie-rock song it wouldn't have that ferocious kick-drum and it would be a lot wordier.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

also we wouldn't be all "wow" that the out-of-tune bit, cz the rest wd be too!! < / ironic hivemind >

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with the "100% Pure Love" praise.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

pop singer makes facile point = "oh who cares, it's thumpin'"
indie band makes facile point = "not only does the music suck, but I am truly offended by this facile point they're trying to make"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Since when is Crystal Waters a pop singer?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Since when is she a singer?

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

david byrne did a cool cover of this as the b side to a single.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha Nicole that was my first draft)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Her howling is as tuneless and painful to my ears as Carmen Rasmussen's.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's produced by Terrence Parker, innit?
He's on the Tigersushi comp now.

abeta, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, when she sticks with the robot vocals all is well, surely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
So very classic. I still prefer "100% Pure Love," but this is a great dance hit. And John Darnielle's wrong: no indie band would essay the wonderful inanity of singing "la da di la da da."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 9 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

ts: this vs impressions

Masked Gazza, Saturday, 9 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

I fucking love this song.

Taste the Blood of Scrovula (noodle vague), Saturday, 9 July 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

good song, but yeah, 100% Pure Love is a million times better.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 9 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

I heard "Gypsy Woman" sandwiched amongst a pack of newer vocal house tunes at a club last year, and it really hasn't aged badly at all. I love all the Basement Boys productions from that era: Mass Order, Ultra Nate, etc. - theirs was an unbelievably sweaty take on house.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Saturday, 9 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Never liked this track, but "100% Pure Love" gets me frugging like a juggernaut of the apocalypse.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 9 July 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

Both Gypsy Woman and 100% Pure Love are great songs

Hot Pants, Sunday, 10 July 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Never liked this track, but "100% Pure Love" gets me frugging like a juggernaut of the apocalypse.

So, seriously, Alex, what is on your Pumpin' Party Anthems disc? Because I'm always very pleasantly surprised by some of the more booty-shakin' tunes you've professed a liking for.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Sunday, 10 July 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

ts: "Gypsy Woman (She's Homesless)" vs. "Mr. Wendall"

I'm a "Mr. Wendall" man, myself.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 10 July 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Mr. Wendall

Weird, I'm apparently in the minority for preferring "Gypsy Woman" to "100% Pure Love." But only like I prefer yellow curry to red.

Eric H., Friday, 13 June 2008 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

Never forget!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 June 2008 05:21 (seventeen years ago)

Eric, liking "Gypsy Woman" more than "100% Pure Love" is a completely sane and rational thing to do

The Reverend, Friday, 13 June 2008 05:23 (seventeen years ago)

As is the reverse, obv. Liking "Come On Down" over both would be cause for concern.

Eric H., Friday, 13 June 2008 06:09 (seventeen years ago)

Still...

Eric H., Friday, 13 June 2008 06:12 (seventeen years ago)

I like "Gypsy Woman" more too.

gypsy woman is a banger

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 13 June 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

When I saw k.d. lang in concert around '93 or thereabouts, she performed a song in which that identical 'la-da-DEE-la-de-DA' figure was slowed down to a quarter of the tempo and used as a hypnotic bass line by her standup-bassist. Dunno if that came before or after "Gypsy Woman" (never owned any k.d. records). That ostinato is maddening - I'll never get it out of my head, whether it's sung or played on an instrument.

As for "Gypsy Woman", the song itself, I doubt I even heard the complete song start-to-finish much more than a half-dozen times, total. (Never willingly listened to the radio in those days.) I did like what I heard, however. Naturally, this thread compels me to give it some more listening. one of these days. Ditto "100% Pure Love".

Myonga Vön Bontee, Friday, 13 June 2008 14:48 (seventeen years ago)

"Gypsy Woman" is less generic, so guess I'd take that one if I had to pick, even if "from the back to the middle and around again I'm gonna be there til the end" in "100 % Pure Love" really is about anal sex. Otherwise, sort of ambvialent about them both.

xhuxk, Friday, 13 June 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)

(Those lyrics are from a lyric site btw; I'd actually always heard it as the even less ambiguous "I'm gonna get you in the end", but maybe I wasn't listening close.)

xhuxk, Friday, 13 June 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

"100% Pure Ass"

Ned Raggett, Friday, 13 June 2008 15:09 (seventeen years ago)

gypsy woman and 100% are both fantastic records, i still play them out whenever the opportunity arists. dropped one of them at a wedding a couple weeks back, people loved it. great tracks, if only pop house could have stayed this good.

pop singer makes facile point = "oh who cares, it's thumpin'"
indie band makes facile point = "not only does the music suck, but I am truly offended by this facile point they're trying to make"

I see nothing wrong with this logic.

I DO see something wrong with there not being more posts about Crystal Waters on ILM.
