HSA and I met a woman involved in organising this and it occured to me that some of you lot might be interested:

CyberSonica '03 - Thursday 19th June to Saturday 21st June

Thursday-
Burnt Friedman & the Nu Dub Players Feat. Jaki Liebezeit
Fennesz
Mitchell Akiyama

Friday-
Kid 606
DJ Rupture
The Bug

Saturday-
Howie B & Addictive TV Sketch Show
Si Begg
Bauhouse
Brian Kane

Apparently there will be visuals and video art and installations and probably wanky SoundArt and the like. There's more details on the invite but I don't feel like typing them.

Anyone the slightest bit interested in going? And can anyone tell me if I'm likely to like any of it? ;-)

I hate when my threads look lonely and unanswered...

kate (kate), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the bug is pretty hardcore dancehall. in a rephlex-friendly sort of way. the only person playing that im interested in is lakuti, on thursday, but its not really worth going just for that.
that friday night is going to be painful through the ica s stinking horrible soundsystem.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate the ica. and also the rfh, and all those venues. warehouses please!

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh. God forbid we should make ART out of anything underground. Go argue with HSA.

(Though agreed, the ICA has an awful sound system. HSA made them bring in bass-bins in order to get proper sound.)

kate (kate), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

the ica is a weird-ish place but its a good venue bcz (the one time i was there anyway) the gig finished at 11pm. that's all i want thanks.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Julio's criteria for good gigs.

kate (kate), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to leave early many times. that is frustrating!

I don't care so much abt accoustics bcz I'm always like to be near the front anyway.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, are you saying that the underground and art are different things?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I am teasing.

What are you saying? That the moment any kind of art gets out of warehouses and is actually recognised by the establishment - or at least the Arts Council - that it is no longer good, no longer valid, etc. etc.? Oh, you indie snob, Gareth!

kate (kate), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

if it isn't art then i already like it.

john cage (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been trying to puzzle out the difference between "Sound Art" and "Experimental Music".

So far, the difference, as explained by HSA = this.

"Experimental Music" is released on tiny labels, it sells a few hundred copies, and the same few hundred people go to the gigs. It does not make the musician any money and his missus has to take him out to dinner.

"Sound Art" is performed in huge galleries, it is funded by the Arts Council, LOADS of people go to look at the installations, and the artist makes loads of money and he can afford to take his missus out to dinner.

I like art. Art is good.

no, not at all. for a start, a lot of great stuff is recognised by the establishment first, counter cultural types usually last to recognise art

anyway, what i am actually saying is something more personal, that i like going to places that open past 11 o'clock, that i like places where people dance, that i dislike seated venues. its more that sometimes there are things i would like to see, and they are in an environment that is too stuffy for me, that finishes way too early. i'm bigging up warehouses because i like going out past 1am, i like lots of people out partying etc etc, its more just a personal gripe. i mean, im not talking about anything particularly great, just like fortress or something! to be honest, just a club environment like where nag nag nag is would be fine...

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate club environments SO MUCH. Everything else gets in the way of my enjoyment of the music - see the "things that WILL happen at gigs" thread. I'm getting to the point (maybe the age?) where I'd rather listen to music in a venue where I am able to enjoy it - where I can sit down if I wish, where I know that I can get home at a reasonable hour, and where I won't have drunk/drugged idiots ruining things for me.

Yes, I am am old fart, where's my OAP card?

kate (kate), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah always hated 'club environments'. i just want to hear some music at a comfortable venue and go home early (no fucking around w/ 'soundchecking' either plz).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the ica does not = 'comfortable environment', which i why i hat it. however, i am in favour of early doors. rfh - i will find out more tomorrow. i like the idea of a spectcle, but it would be better if they had a sort of interval, where you could buy ice cream n stuff. and it costs $$$$$$ 20 quid to see toroise tussle w/ coldcut?

hahahaha in fact the concert tomorrow is surely the stuff ILX nightmares are made of, isnt it? every single critically acclaimed, or hasbeen artiste (like, im assuming lee perry is the bob marley of dub, even tho i know nothing about it) playing toghether in a unholy mish mash.

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you're right about the discomfort of the ICA. I'd like it better if it had seats. And you can't have gigs in the seated bit of the bar because the acoustics are so bloody awful - but hey! they turned Momus into dronepop, so it can't be all bad!

I actually quite like the RFA as a venue. But the other, little venue is better. The Queen Elizabeth Hall or whatever it's called? Ice cream should be sold at more gigs. They sold Ice Cream at the Barbican, but then they wouldn't let us take it in The Pit. :-(
