And can we find a BLACK Coldplay fan?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

DMB makes the bile in my stomach rise to my throat whereas Coldplay just makes it bubble a bit.

Coldplay wins.

sarah mccormick (unsarah), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I was JUST thinking, "You know, we need another thread where ILM rips apart DMB and/or Coldplay."

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that "Clocks" song. (*ducks*)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Clocks" is apparently where the blind monkeys finally found the banana.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Matthews does have one song ("What Would You Say") that I can listen through all the way, but I can't stand any of his others for a second. Coldplay has no songs I can listen through all the way, but several that I can listen to for one or two minutes. I'm not sure who I give it to.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

prefer dmb as have never / will never hear them

kieron, Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"What Would You Say" is torture!

Aaron A., Tuesday, 10 June 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Coldplay fan: Scarface.

On MTV's "Cribs" he refers to them as "his dawgs".

Bobby D Gray (bedhead), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

another: Kevin Garnett

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

On MTV's "Cribs" he refers to them as "his dawgs".

This has made my day.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I'm all for seeing Coldplay chained up in Scarface's backyard.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

you perv!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and you're not contemplating the idea either.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

get outta my head dream police!!!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

anyhow dmb has more songs I tolerate/like well enough to not change the station (like 5 to 1), though they had the head start too, whereas coldplay has more songs I actually like (like 1 to 0, and yep, it's "clocks"), though hbo is testing my patience on that front.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

We'll see how long this thread takes to really get cooking. I've noticed it usually takes a while for the all out shitstorm to begin.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think coldplay have the kind of cult-devotee following that dmb (being vaguely a jamband) do to really let this thing flower like it should.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 00:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Give it time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Were the Strokes annoying on ILX a while back like Coldplay is now?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - see the 'best music writing of 2002' book

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i like coldplay better. dave matthews' voice bugs me, kind of. and i'm not too groovy with the violin

ron (ron), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Were the Dave Matthews band ever on Fierce Panda? I don't think so. I hate having to chose Coldplay over anything, but I think I'm going to have to.

I do like that one "beautiful world" song, I have to admit.

I ask again and again "Is Clocks the one that sounds exactly like Blur's Sing?" and no one ever answers me. I guess anyone that likes Clocks probably hasn't actually heard Sing in order to tell me the comparison. Sigh.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate I like "Clocks" and will download "Sing" later to confirm/deny. I heard "Sing" once in a pub and liked it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Blur's "Sing" the one that sounds exactly like Travis' "Sing"? ;^)

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Travis' "Sing" is the one that sounds like Travis' "Turn" if that's any help.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

It is the first song on the new album. < /cheap trick >

I believe. My old housemate used to play it loads and I was always tricked into thinking he was listening to Blur and getting excited.

No, Travis and Blur's Sing sound nothing alike. Sing sounds creepy and weird with pounding drone-piano and a neat bass-loop.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I've just checked AMG and I'm wrong. The song that sounds like Sing is called Politik or something pretentious like that.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad thinks Coldplay sound like Camel. I have no idea if this is true.

Cathy, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlie Number Four keeps annoying me by playing Ride songs and singing Coldplay lyrics over the top.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
coldplay and dmb? that's like asking me to choose between my children.

call mr. lee (call mr. lee), Friday, 18 July 2003 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Clocks too. Now I feel slightly less ashamed of it. Although, I also kinda like Politik...

Would rather hear Coldplay than Dave Matthews' irritating voice.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Friday, 18 July 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

coldplay and dmb? that's like asking me to choose between my children.

In terms of which one you're going lock in a closet first?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 July 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

or which you're going to give to Rumplestiltskin

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 18 July 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i liked the video for trouble. i hated the video for the space between. coldplay is victor. live it up guys, it's not going to happen again.

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 18 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

You're gonna try to make me say something nice about coldplay aren't you?

Well ner, I shan't. No way. Nooooo way. Nuh-uuh.

*pouts*

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 19 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Coldplay fan: Scarface.
On MTV's "Cribs" he refers to them as "his dawgs".

Then he should hook up with Ice-T and collaborate on a mashup combining Coldplay with Phil Collins.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 20 July 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Colldplay! Aaaaargh!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 20 July 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

DAVE MATTHEWS ALL THE WAY NO question asked

Theresa Wagner, Thursday, 11 December 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I likes 'em both!! Fuck you!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember P. Diddy saying on the Tonight Show that he likes Coldplay.

kevin erickson, Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that's because it's fucking de rigeur for all black artists in hip pop fraternity to sing their praises at the slightest opportunity. i don't really understand it but it happens in the UK too with the likes of Mis-Teeq and So Solid joining in the 'fun'.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Matthews basically sucks, while Coldplay is one of the best current bands. Easy win for Coldplay.

And most UK vs. US TS's will end with a UK win anyway :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Stereophonics vs REM

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, Dan. There are exceptions :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha yeah, Stereophonics vs ____________ is pretty much going to be a walkover, isn't it?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 11 December 2003 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I heard Timbaland wants to work with Coldplay. Thats fucked up. Come to think of it I'll taked DMB's side cause they'd sound better w/ Timbaland than Coldplay ever could. I like neither though.

Timbaland needs to work w/ me if he wants to work with skinny white kids. Why Coldplay?? Again, thats fucked up.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pro-Coldplay. I've come around to quite liking a bunch of their songs. Meanwhile, I only like about three or four DMB songs, and the rest actively annoy me.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

THE DAVE MATTHEWS BAND SUCKS!

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

My feelings exactly. Coldplay a little more though.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

but Kermit stole his "voice" from that dude in Canned Heat! i mean, listen to "going to the country" and tell me that it doesn't sound like Kermit the Frog!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 11 December 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Coldplay live album and DVD come together for the price of one of them. They are essentially a buy one, get one free offer - not too bad for the fans.

I like Coldplay a lot and honestly can't see why they get slated so much. I find Chris Martin's modesty and normality refreshing too. Top bloke.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I find Chris Martin's modesty and normality refreshing too.

A modesty and normality reflected in his modest, normal and mediocre music. Salut!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 December 2003 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehe, every time Ned expresses an opinion I grow a little more fond of him.

This is a tough one for me. While The Dave Matthews Bland are slightly easier to ignore, Codplay are hilarious in that Chris Martin is married to a Hollywood movie-star and best friends with some mindless plastic-pop singer, and yet he's still considered "indie". Indie-schmindie.

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 11 December 2003 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hehe, every time Ned expresses an opinion I grow a little more fond of him.

One tries. Thanks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see why you would say Codplay get "slated" - they are huge. I think their music is just fine - perfectly executed and all. But thats just it - I don't care for it cause its just so predictable. Its what everyone and their mothers want to hear now. I'd like a little more... if they DID work w/ Timbaland.... maybe....

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

haw haw

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

D'oh! Again, DMB does not suck, they're very talented actually. Boring? Maybe. Depends on your musical background and what you're into. Someone who is used to jams and what you call "boring music" is more apt to be interested in say the DMB and not something more intense. At least DMB have some sort of strong instrumental foundation, while Coldplay is just...there.

Allison (Allison), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Talented??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my god, an Allison/Aja war. This could be Armageddon!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

If there's one thing I respect Coldplay for it's the relative simplicity of their music without falling into the rock'n'roll guitar cliches of these nasty retro bands.

Also, 'jam' music is the only kind of music I hate more than wanky guitar-solo 'classic rock'.

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet Codplay couldn't even play a whole Dave Matthews Band song without fucking it up. I never thought I'd be defending Dave Matthews so much but fuck, you're comparing TALENTED (DAMN FUCKING STRAIGHT) musicians who care about what they do to guys who probably practice more for their videos.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure you've only heard what's on the radio in the past couple of years so I can't hold that comment against you. There's no denying that they're falling farther from their original sound with every passing year, which means falling farther from my tastes. They are talented, believe it or not...just maybe not by the standards of a person who thinks Dave Grohl can play better than Carter Beouford.

Allison (Allison), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah... because being able to play an instrument without making mistakes is the most important thing when it comes to music. I mean, if your music isn't flashy enough to make people who don't play guitar think you're some kind of genius, what kind of rock star are you?!?!

Everybody knows that...

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Who's Carter Beouford?

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, I'm assuming thats Dave Matthews' drummer. Who thinks Grohl can outplay this cat??? haha

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Grohl may be an idiot, a shitty singer and a terrible song-writer but he's a fucking excellent drummer. Well, he was on In Utero.

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Grohl can't even outplay Crover so why would you pit him against someone like that??

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

who can play "better" and who i'd rather listen to are two entirely separate worlds.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

who can play "better" and who i'd rather listen to are two entirely separate worlds.
-- Felcher

Damn, why did you have to bring common sense into this?

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave Grohl may be an idiot, a shitty singer and a terrible song-writer but he's a fucking excellent drummer. Well, he was on In Utero.

That drumming was done acousitly.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

as opposed to cevin key's drumasaurus?

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing you haven't heard Carter or you probably wouldn't be ranking Dave Grohl above him. He probably makes up for 99.9% of all flaws that DMB may have.

Allison (Allison), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

They don't usually record the drums acousiticly.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"I'm guessing you haven't heard Carter or you probably wouldn't be ranking Dave Grohl above him. He probably makes up for 99.9% of all flaws that DMB may have."

Exactly. How could Dave Grohl be good? He was in NIRVANA!

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

next: John Bonham vs. that dude from Mr. Mister

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

what do you mean by acoustically? i mean, i know it's not a drum machine.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The drums on In Utero sound like shit.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

You have problems.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

it all depends on the context. considering the accompanying music, i think the drums on In Utero are some of the best sounding drums i've ever heard. I dont think i've ever disliked a drum sound miked by steve albini.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you. Of course I know some people have different tastes. I just like to poke at people like "You have problems" girl for being so attached to one thing. I never was able to get into the Albini sound but I know a lot of people who loved it and I'm down with that. I never was really able to find a drum sound in rock that I LOVED. Thats really crazy too - as much rock (w/ drums) there is out there.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

do you have any idea of what kind of drum sound you've been hoping for?

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

and i still want to know what you mean by "acoustically", aja. ive always wondered if albini got the in utero sound from lots of ambient miking.

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"I dont think i've ever disliked a drum sound miked by steve albini."

High five!

Seriously though, Scentless Apprentice. I don't care if Grohl can't annoy everybody with needless fills, he has/had POWER God-damnit.

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Scentless Apprentice RULES!!!!!

Aja (aja), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I think rock drums need to get BIGGER like some sort of REAL industrial drum shit. You know where the drums are just fuckin HUGE. But I don't want it to sound like KMFDM or anything - but real drums.

I still think Albini was better w/ drum sounds than guitar sounds.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i assumed that was conventional wisdom

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean even cobain, when they got albini, was supposedly ecstatic listening to surfer rosa and saying 'our snare's gonna sound like that!'

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I've just never really been as into drum sounds as much as some folks. My favorite album of all-time is Loveless. Go figure.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Seam - The Problem With Me

I like the rock drum sound!

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think rock drums need to get BIGGER like some sort of REAL industrial drum shit. You know where the drums are just fuckin HUGE. But I don't want it to sound like KMFDM or anything - but real drums.

-- Johnny Badlees

Like Cop-era Swans?

Stupid (Stupid), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i was never all that into drum sounds until i realized how vastly complex and important they are in recording any good music (that has drums in it, of course)

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I only heard the Swans once. Don't remember the drum sound, but I wasn't into it as a whole. I can't get into something simply on a good drum sound though. I am a guitar person.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 11 December 2003 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I think those people that find it so easy to ridicule, havent yet learned to look beyond the stereotypical perceptions they gain by looking at everyone around them and finding a reason to ridicule. I am black, and I am sure that both Coldplay and Dave Matthews have given this generation and those to come, a way to look at things differently. And Im not talking about the lyrics, although I love the free verse that both seem to use and dont give a f&*%$ what others might think in the process, what gives me that same amount of pride as my mom had growing up with the ultimatly influential beatles, is the freedom they both experience, a freedom too many of us take for granted by trying to be everything we arent and never taking a second to realize how awesome you are if you let yourself be who you are. That is what this music means to me, and when I get caught up and forget how to enjoy life and this is what reminds me its not important, to let go of all the things that go wrong, this is what reminds me everytime. So have your biases, fine, but at least give yourself the opportunity to make up your own mind - if it does nothing for you then fine, but what if it could? Wouldnt you want to see?

trying to enjoy what I can, Monday, 19 January 2004 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with this idiot. Only people who like crap music are truly themselves.

The Beatles. Now THEY were a REAL band.

Keep it real.

Stupid (Stupid), Monday, 19 January 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sure that both Coldplay and Dave Matthews have given this generation and those to come, a way to look at things differently.
