Crunk: S&D

What's the best and the worst of this music?

After being repelled by "Get Low" by Lil' Jon and the Eastside Boyz I am now fascinated by it and want more of this music.

Tell me where to go.

is this a genre now?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 10 June 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I think groups like Lil Jon and the Ying Yang Twinz are making it so.

I was warned there weren't really any ILMers knowledgable about Hip Hop. . .

i downloaded a bunch of tracks tonight and seriously, i'm not hearing any major differences to the rest of the dirty south stuff. i mean, the bass is super duper slow and the hi hats are super duper fast on a few songs, but nothing to slap a new genre title on it besides Lil Jon's album being called King of Crunk.

and if your email is an indication of where you're from, it seems like this may just be a regional nickname for a few artists. most of this stuff doesn't get too much play outside the south.

oh and these songs are so dirty, especially the slow "ballads". it reminds me of sneaking off into my room to listen to my NWA and Two Live Crew tapes in junior high.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 06:32 (twenty-two years ago)

is it like a variation on dj screw stuff?

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it's straight dirty south shit. i mean the bpm's are kinda slow, but it's no syrup-y shit.

JasonD (JasonD), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's definitely dirty south in origin. I read an article though that really tried to play up the music as being close to Miami booty shakin' type stuff. I'm just wondering if these artists are on to something by pulling together a little bit from each genre. It's all you hear down here.

i've never heard it called 'crunk' before. most of the things you're talking about don't seem like they wouldn't fit into the newer half of what everyone just calls 'bounce' or 'dirty south' or any other name for that kind of thing, the massive hook and the lite beat over a big bass thing, right? like bonecrusher???? or pastor troy???? or choppa??? or lil boosie??? or the new david banner single???

eh?

d k (d k), Thursday, 12 June 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Like bonecrusher yes. Very club oriented. "King of Crunk" is Lil Jon's 4th album and is more cashing on this trend then vice versa methinks.

I was just playing Quackle, the computer Scrabble program. Much to my disappointment, "crunkier" was disallowed. Disagree.

The Ying Yang Twins are crunky. Lil' Jon's even crunkier.
