Tell Me About Rei Harakami

...because I don't really know too much. Does he have some sort of affiliation with Nobukazu Takemura? What's his best record? What should I expect? Should I look for his stuff?

I'm going to bed now, but I hope someone has something to tell me by the time I wake up.

no ties to Takemura, to my knowledge, though both producers are from Kyoto. there's a Ken Ishii connection through Sublime, who put out most of Harakami's music.

Harakami doesn't share Nobukazu's experimental proclivities, working with more of a sculpted post-Detroit techno template (in a GPR or (Op)ART vein). his debut (S/T) 12" EP and Unrest Works are very Ishii in style, something like a subtler Jelly Tones or Grip. very nice, but i'd recommend Opa*q instead. especially if you like the tech-house-jazz fusions of Daniel Ibbotson or Ian O'Brien (who contributes a fantastic remix here) or the more
"transgressive" techno labels, like Eevo Lute (Max404 also remixed a track) and Clear.

i'd like to hear some ILM impressions of Harakami's more recent Red Curb and the semi-remix set Trace of Red Curb. great credentials - Max Brennan's all over "Red Curb;" Trace has Atom Heart, Wechsel Garland, Okihide of Tanzmuzik, etc - but i've never seen either CD going for less than $35.
