Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Go nuts. I'm still scratching my head over number 4.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

06.11.03
02:35 AM
what about indie stuff? This is all corporate

What, no Pixies, no Husker Du, no Minutemen, no Big Black, no Minor Threat,
no Bikini Kill, no Big Boys, no Momus, no Magnetic Fields, no Diamanda
Galas, no Stereolab...

And as far as major label stuff, no Flaming Lips?

What a joke!

It's all about the payola.

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

MOMUS FANS ARE LAYING INTO THE VH1 MESSAGE BOARD!!!

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

45) Aerosmith -I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing

On what planet is this considered one of the greatest and most important songs of the past quarter-century?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

46) Queen and David Bowie - Under Pressure

Of all the songs from the individual Queen and Bowie catalogs they coulda picked... why is this important, because it inspired "Ice Ice Baby"?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

pat benatar !
with a record i've never heard of !!

i get the feeling the benatar 'ardcore
fan forums have had a meeting.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

haha well of course if you've never heard of it it clearly doesn't exist

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I sometimes feel like I don't belong. My experience with "great" songs is much much different.

I shall take a stab at the narrative for some of these:
91) Melissa Etheridge - Come To My Window. Key words used: Fusing, power, female empowerment.
24) Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On. Key words used: powerful, female empowerment.
26) Bon Jovi - Livin’ On A Prayer. Key words used: Bad Boys, power.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god, I just noticed 48) Naughty By Nature - O.P.P.

dave225 (Dave225), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel sorta silly after reading this.
I'm not a big rap/hiphop fan, to be honest, but these are the only songs I like on the list, and I'd certainly have a hardtime calling Sweet Dreams "great":

76) Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
38) The Clash - London Calling
35) The Sugarhill Gang - Rapper’s Delight
27) Grandmaster Flash - The Message
19) Public Enemy - Fight The Power

There's a few more alright songs, though not ones I'd ever need to hear again, like the two Michael Jackson songs and the Ramones track.

Of all the songs they've could've picked from Devo and Talking Heads, they ended up with Whip It and Once In A lifetime? What on earth is that?

It's nice to see that they're trying to list some newer things too, but come on. I thought everyone despised "Don't wanna miss a thing". EVERYONE!

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

87) The Who - Who Are You
72) John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over

Errrrrrr...

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate to have to be the one to say this, but... it's VH1!!! What did you expect? The video channel that was born to be middle of the road. Sure, there are some things that are downright perplexing, like Eminem - I didn't realise he'd penetrated that far into middle America's consciousness. But for the overwhelming most part, it's exactly what I'd expect.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I know, I just wanted to give the ILM massive something sub-Trifean to chew on this Wednesday morning.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually surprised by how... I was going to say good, but that's an overstatement. Surprised by how *not-shit* it is, given the source!

There's at least 20 songs I love on it. OH MY GOD, I'M SO OLD...

kate (kate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

certainly i like more songs on that list than dislike...but right now any chart that omits Nu Shooz 'Point Of No Return' is automatically void, right Jody?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

damn straight.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Of all the songs from the individual Queen and Bowie catalogs they coulda picked...

How many good songs has David Bowie done since 1978 (that were hits, anyway)?

Vic Funk, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh come on. "I'm Afraid of Americans"!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

"'Heroes'"
"The Lodger"
SNL appearance with Klaus Nomi
"Scary Monsters"
"Putting Out Fire" (OST mix)
Tin Machine (live)

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister was telling me she was listening to some talk radio station last night where people were calling in and expressing their outrage at the picks for this list, and disbelief that Billy Joel was shut out. That alone makes this list worthwhile.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

84) Radiohead - Creep

This is like including the Beatles' "Love Me Do" as their only entry on a "Best of the 1960s" list.

PS no Sex Pistols.

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The Sex Pistols are fucking terrible.

No New Order though.....

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Sex Pistols tunes are all 26/27 years old now though. I'm assuming the cut-off point is 1978?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If it's not my favourite song featuring either Queen or Bowie, "Under Pressure" is pretty damn close. I think that's a lot more defensible than "Smooth" or "Are You Gonna Go My Way".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i only take issue with Madonna being represented by ray of light and like a virgin. not that they are bad, but...into the groove and live to tell would have been my choices.

scott seward, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The choice for Green Day was pretty terrible. Why bother putting them on at all? Anything from Dookie > that shit.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Don't Stop Believin", "Waterfalls", "Heart of Glass" and "Jump" are totally OTM.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

>I'm assuming the cut-off point is 1978

Thus denying both the Pistols and the OST for "Saturday Night Fever," arguably the two most influential albums of the last 25 years.

PS I think we can safely replace

98) Hanson - MMMBop

with Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson, Graham Parker, Nick Lowe, Ian Dury, the Boomtown Rats, the Specials, Madness and/or the English Beat.

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

17) Def Leppard - Photograph

Awsome.

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Not to mention

83) Band Aid - Do They Know It’s Christmas

with the Cure, Depeche Mode, aforementioned New Order, Blur, Pulp, Primal Scream and/or Roxy Music's "Avalon."

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

67) John Cougar Mellencamp - Jack And Diane

Insert Ozzy, Motley Crue, Poison,Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax, Korn, Tool and/or Marilyn Manson.

Oh yeah, and Frank Zappa's "Valley Girl."

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

67) John Cougar Mellencamp - Jack And Diane

Insert Ozzy, Motley Crue, Poison, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax, Korn, Tool and/or Marilyn Manson.

Oh yeah, and Frank Zappa's "Valley Girl."

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

67) John Cougar Mellencamp - Jack And Diane

Insert Ozzy, Motley Crue, Poison, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax, Korn, Tool and/or Marilyn Manson.

Oh yeah, and Frank Zappa's "Valley Girl."

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

damn! x-post!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

seriously for a vh1 list it's very very good, and if billy joel's brigade are up in arms over 'o.p.p.' locking out 'we didn't start the fire' more's the better

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Of all the Run DMC songs too...sheesh. No wonder everyone I know is an asshole.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

howzabout whiners post their own lists instead of whining?

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

not directed at you horace

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

>I'm assuming the cut-off point is 1978

Thus denying both the Pistols and the OST for "Saturday Night Fever," arguably the two most influential albums of the last 25 years.

EXCEPT THEY WERE RELEASED MORE THAN 25 YEARS AGO!

Thirty-six really great songs and a lot of other good songs, the biggest act of lunacy on the list is #5 not #4.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, "One" is more like a great giant number two of a song but it's hard to take issue with a vh-1 list like this.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I also count 36 great songs - but I bet there not the same as Tico Tico's. Still 36 out of a 100 is not a very high success rate - I know ILM could do better.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

there = they're (now I feel dumb)

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(Some others are maybe great or awful but I don't know them or can't remember.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i refuse to accept 8 of those 'awful' songs are actually awful despite their utter canonism...obviously most people are sick of them tho

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(84, 72, 63, 50, 41, 32, 9 and 5 if you must know)...but its the usual 'memories' excuse, and i dont really have a problem with 'Don't Speak' either - other than i do not wish to hear it...ever...again

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ones that are OK but I'm sick of them don't count, whereas ones that were OK but are now rotten do (only 2 of those tho). Canonicity not a factor or I'd have claimed Nirvana was awful wouldn't I?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Cars, the B-52s, Kate Bush, Jane's Addiction, Smashing Pumpkins and not co-crediting Aerosmith for "Walk This Way."

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like my list overlaps with Tico^2 by about 50%.

96) Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)
90) The Police - Roxanne
89) Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot
87) The Who - Who Are You
82) Soft Cell - Tainted Love
80) Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf
77) Missy Elliott - Work It
75) The Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated
74) Hall & Oates - I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)
70) Culture Club - Do You Really Want to Hurt Me
67) John Cougar Mellencamp - Jack And Diane
66) Squeeze - Tempted
62) Pretenders - Brass In Pocket
61) Backstreet Boys - I Want It That Way
60) Santana feat Rob Thomas - Smooth
57) Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven
55) Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime
52) The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up
42) Blondie - Heart Of Glass
40) Michael Jackson - Beat It
39) Tom Petty - Free Fallin’
36) Joan Jett - I Love Rock ‘N Roll

06) Run-D.M.C. - Walk This Way
03) Guns N’ Roses - Sweet Child O’ Mine
02) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
01) Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the only thing wrong with those songs listed is possible triteness, but you could say that about a lot of the other songs

interesting tho - what makes 'I Love Rock n' Roll' and 'Jump' great but 'Are You Gonna Go My Way' awful? they're not so different are they?

and 'One' is very well written i thought...as for 'Just Like Starting Over' - i've just decided its essentially the basis for 'A Design For life', oh dear...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know what? I have a soft spot for "My Heart Will Go On."
I never saw (and hopefully never will see) Titanic, but I lived in Mtl in the aftermath and in the restaurant I worked in a nice lady came in on Fri's and Sat's and sang and played piano, mostly Celine. Her sounds wafted into the kitchen as our aromas wafted out, and after the 8 millionth time, I came to accept that song as at the very least a fact of life.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Love Rock N Roll" - great b/c it makes me smile and think of Mark S' posts and b/c Joan Jett's persona/voice is cool.

"Jump" - lovely baroque synths'n'solos music.

"Are You Gonna Go..." - none of the above, plus Lenny K annoys me (and please no counterfactual nonsense about "if somebody else had made it you'd like it"; somebody else didn't.)

Triteness is generally duff if it's combined with portentiousness and an unwillingness to risk making an idiot of oneself (why Meat Loaf is OK and U2 aren't).

I may have been too harsh on Just Like Starting Over but it's still pretty eh.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I may have been too harsh on Celine too, the hook is OK in that song though "Think Twice" is better.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

disbelief that Billy Joel was shut out. That alone makes this list worthwhile.

My goodness, you're right! I'm not bothering with arguing over the list itself but surely this is a sign of good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame
You say...

One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don't care for it

Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's...

Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One...

Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head

Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
BOLLOCKS YOU CUNTS THIS IS QUALITY!
When all you got is hurt

One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other

One...life

One

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH-HAAAAAAAAAAA
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH-HAAAAAAAAAAA
EH-HEH, EH-HEH, EH-HOOOOOOOOOOOOO
WUNNNNNNNNN

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty much everything else about my tastes has changed since 1991 so it's actually quite comforting to find I still loathe that poxy song just as utterly and bitterly. Thankyou stevem.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

that was the Lighthouse Family version obviously

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

its a classic song cos its about Bono's divorce from The Edge, but they're still able to work together after all these years even when Bono forgot his birthday and had to get Boyzone riding an elephant in to make up for it

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

this girl I was dating at the time told me that "One" was about AIDS, and therefore deep.
I told her she was so wrong and she said I was homophobic.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I might've also told her she was stupid.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really glad "Closer" made the list. And "Mama Said Knock You Out."

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I was born in 1979, so I guess 96% of these songs came out during my lifetime. It's sort of boggling my mind how few of them actually had any effect on me whatsoever.

sorry now i'm picturing Tico and Horace posing at the helm of the Titanic in unity while Celine blares away relentlessly while i row the rubber dinghy that is the poor criminally over-earnest U2 thru the storm

They say Tupac's not dead... I'm not sure about it. Kurt Cobain though, is currently alive and well, and making sure VH1 never stops there never-ending Nirvana blow-job.

Like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" I liked at the time (I was 11) but thought was pretty much on par with "Countdown to Extinction" by Megadeth and not quite as good as "Wherever I May Roam" by Metallica.

"Beat It" was way, way bigger at my nursery school than "Billie Jean."

"Paradise City" was bigger in my third grade class than "Sweet Child O' Mine," although now "Sweet Child" is probably one of my favorites from the list.

I could keep doing this all day. Maybe I will. I'm bored.

You and me both!

the biggest problem with their list is that it doesn't have nearly enough one-hit wonders and historical footnotes. they're trying to shoehorn in everyone with a 'legacy' and ignoring actual great songs.

"sigh...i wish Geir was here..."

What? My insights on these songs aren't enough? Nobody cares that "My Heart Will Go On" was my prom theme? Fuck y'all.

This list is in dire need of album tracks.
