What bands do you bear an animosity/hatred towards that sometimes goes beyond the rational, and why? Over the years, I've had plenty. Bands that ape other, more original acts prolly get my dander up the most, but sometimes you witness a cauldron of suck so undeniable (either live or on record) that you decide to apportion a certain percentage of your future time to slagging off said cauldron of suck at every opportunity. Also, lousy/mediocre bands that cop the 'tude of shit-without-stink are fair game.

Mine:

Trumans Water
June of 44
Mogwai
Storm & Stress
Silkworm (early years)
Casey Rice/Designer
USA
Rodan
Joan of Arc
Will Oldham
Lost Cause
Stone Temple Pilots (aka Stone Pimple Pilots)
Marilyn Manson
Korn
Jessamine
Explosions in the Sky
The Fire Show
Rachel's
Liars
Oxes
Promise Ring
Jesus Lizard (later years)
Number One Cup
90 Day Men
Les Savy Fav
Orange Cake Mix
Songs: Ohia
Silver Jews
To Rococo Rot
Fischerspooner
Flowchart

I've managed to temporarily erase the memory of a lot of the horrible stuff from the late '80s and early '90s, but I'm sure this thread will help revive those...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, how could I forget?

Bright Eyes
The Rapture

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

bands that do not belong on that list whose records you should now reexamine in the cold clear light of the post-nineties:

The Jesus Lizard
Silver Jews
Silkworm
and probably Mogwai, though to be honest I can't be bothered

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like music.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I concur on all but Rachel's and Will Oldham, though when it comes to the latter I fully understand, what with his pseudo-General Longstreet beard and what not. I still like him despite what I find to be his fairly artificial persona.

I would add:

Belle and Sebastian
Kings of Convenience
Bruce Springsteen
Phish
Barenaked Ladies
Moldy Peaches
Andrew WK

trigger, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna post something really mean but I can't be bothered. What exactly is the point of threads like this?

hstencil, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Why Stence, it is to hurt me in my heart by nominating Trumans Water, whose singles comp I have right here. And by nominating Mogwai and Silkworm and Jessamine and...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

and why would anyone ever want to hurt you Ned? It doesn't make any sense to me.

hstencil, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If I answered the question seriously, we'd be here all day (and the number one candidate on that list would be me, as I know from enough self-tormenting experience).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The point of this thread is to discuss bands you enjoy dissing, I think.

Or is that not allowed here?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the same Ned Raggett who claims that Lothar Meid was the vocalist on Amon Duul II's "Phallus Dei" when even a child knows Meid didn't join them until "Dance of the Lemmings"?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the problem is that it's allowed. I get fucking bored with it (even though I engage in it plenty). So sick of hearing what everyone hates, how about we try not being haters for a minute?

hstencil, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Almost certainly is me, Dadaismus. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Baked Beans needs to learn how to get over things. I mean a list of two or three is okay, but you're into the land of the pathological there buddy. Like Steve Buscemi in Billy Madison.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, you must brush up on the late 60s Munich scene

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who knows who all those bands are deserves them, frankly.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But but but I WAS THERE. *is beaten*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, sorry for offending.

(OT) Horace, is Billy Madison worth renting? Haven't seen it...

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Madison stands as my favourite Adam Sandler movie. Everything else is a dilution of it.
Plus Norm Macdonald is in it (and he's my hero).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

A free drInk to tHe person who can guess who my whipping band is.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Baker Bean: What's wrong with the Fire Show?

T. Weiss (Timmy), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

too easy jim, can you post me A beer? I need one Here right now.

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

heh. sure. is powdered form ok?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

to be added to the list of irrational hatreds:

sigur ros
godspeed you black emperor!
grateful dead
anything nu-metal

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the idea of Stone Temple Pilots better than the reality

dave q, Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Baked Bean: Do you hate indie?

My irrational hatreds:

-Belle and Suckasstian
-The Strokes
-The Bleah Bleah Bleahs
(though I suspect they're really the same band. In fact, they are ALL the same band I hate them all, but those two are my particular bugbears)
-The Grateful Dead - wait, a minute, that's not irrational at all
-"Nickalicious music"
-I've never heard Bright Eyes or the Dismemberment Plan but I know I hate them.
-Lesbians. Any band with lesbians at all.

Oh, I've got to stop, this is making me too cross.

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

but TaTu roXors!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

'Any band with lesbians at all'

you hate the Spice Girls!!!!?

dave q, Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

er kate, are you forgetting Deb Googe?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

actually I hate Mogwai too

dave q, Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

er kate, are you forgetting Deb Googe?

deb googe don't like male spooge?

re mogwai: if only their music was as entertaining as they themselves are ...

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Curses. I did forget Deb Goodge. And Snowpony.

Let me rephrase. I hate all bands with lesbians. Unless they are shoegazer/dronerock. Except for Electralane, who I hate for being dull despite being lesbians or dronerockers or annoying hepsters from Brighton.

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

For the record, I have nothing against lesbians and I am not homophobic (anymore than I am misanthropic and hate ALL people). I just don't think that they should make music. Or the Welsh, either. (Except for Super Furry Animals, but so long as they don't actually *sing* in Welsh)

I'm trying to think of my nightmare band, and it would be Welsh Lesbian Funk-Jazz. ::shudders::

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

we've all forgotten the one, obvious whipping boy on ILM ...

CREED!

that is all for now

n.b.: i actually sympathize somewhat w/ kate's no-lesbian musician thing ... though i usually think of the lesbians singing shrill, acoustic-guitar dyke-songs, not MBV or TaTu.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha ... an all-lesbian welsh grateful dead cover band!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Moonspell.
Not sure how it happened, I used to just have a normal, healthy hate of the band, but I think it's because I know several people who hate them as much as me, we ended up using "Moonspell" as an insult, which pretty much dragged it down even more.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

dodgy
ocean colour scene
gene
kula shaker
cast
clodplay

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha ... an all-lesbian welsh grateful dead cover band!

AAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

::runs screaming from ILM::

No, I'm not thinking of the acoustic folkie kind, (except for Sarah Dougher, who should be beaten! With sticks!) I can even stand those. I'm thinking of the shouty loud bad guitar riot grrrlie kind.

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

personal hates:
black rebel motorcycle club
yeah yeah yeahs (i'd shag karen o though)
creed
beck, gah i really hate him
get up kids/every band that sounds even a bit like them
heh, can i be first to mention my Dave Matthew's Band hate. muppet.

don't rag on the Dead, i mean i know a lot of people don't like hippies (actually hippies can be very kind and generous people, id take them over indie scensters any day), but the dead have got some pretty cool stuff, mostly live stuff. i really like oldham too. as for his persona, does having a beard really constitute having an artificial persona? i guess the only way i could say he has imaginary persona's is with all the name changing he does, but i guess i've always just found it interesting. is having a larger than life persona a bad thing in music? normal people are boring. in truth, i can't really comment on his persona, i mean i don't know him personally. maybe he just likes beards. is there a beards C/D thread yet?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

the dead could've looked like kraftwerk or mbv or roxy music or the mothers of invention (scratch that, they kinda did look like the mothers) and if they still played the sorta shit they played as smelly hippies i'd still hate 'em.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh!!! BRMC beGONE!!! And take the Warlocks with you!

Bob, please don't get me started on the Grateful Dead. Even hstencil could not tempt me into the back of his van with the idea of converting me to the Dead.

I like beards. Or, at least, I like HSA's specific beard. I generally don't like them in general.

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

DJ Shadow
BMRC too I guess

dave q, Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

so you don't like jerry garcia's beard? but its jerry!

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, kraftwerk did kinda look like the dead in their very early days ... before they adopted the kraut menschmaschine look that we all know and love!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd still take the dead over kraftwerk any day.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

heretic!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"truckin'" vs. "autobahn"

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

am i the only person who has any love for the dead here?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:51 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, you aren't. there are lots of ILM dead-lovers. maybe not on this thread -- you "lucked out" in that the 2 biggest dead-haters on this board (i.e., kate and myself) are also posting on this thread.

;-p

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the dead.

(this joke never gets old)

Alice Cooper (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

thats cool, i like the variety around here. also, i'm fairly new to ilm, but why are there so many killing joke pictures on half of these threads?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:00 (twenty-two years ago)

because of alex!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

nb: alex in nyc spreads pooh-cheer by peppering ILM generously w/ exhortations to "honour the fire" and KJ pix.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It could be worse. It could be pictures of Julian Casablancas' ass.

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

jim, it's Jet innit?

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i got no problem with the Joke. they've produced some real good stuff. can't say the same for casablancas' ass. do people actually have pictures of that?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The repetition of Autobahn is *intentional*, trying to give an impression of the freedom of the open road. Free will, power, modern technology, a thousand pylons all alike, isn't it great?

The repetition of Truckin' is the inescapble, inevitable BOREDOM of the open road, monotony because stoned, wibbling hippies cannot think of anything better to do than to endlessly endlessly endlessly drive, drive, pass the drugs, dude, isn't it terrible?

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Never underestimate the power of 13 year old Strokes fans with digital cameras!

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

red hot chili peppers
lighthouse family
nelly
disclaimer:my dislike for these people is in no way racially motivated

robin (robin), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

jim, it's Jet innit?

yay Jet! nah, even after owning their 12" for ages now, i'm still yet to listen to it.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i am relatively new here but have observed sarcastic derision for

stereophonics - i made the cardinal sin of stating a liking for their first album and i swear i could hear crickets chirping in the defeaning silence that followed.

coldplay
ryan adams
liz phair
avril the minx

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

truckin' for me. its got that whole message of just letting things slide that i like. i got no problem with kraftwerk either though

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that's deafening silence

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"This little life of mine, I'm gonna let it slide..." AARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!! Jason Pierce in turning into Grateful Dead abomination shockah!!!

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

T. Weiss: I saw them at Schuba's up close, and it was not pretty.

Kate: I heart indie, for the most part. If I were to produce a list of bands I admire/respect/like/love, it would run multiple pages in tiny type. But having worked distro/mailorder/retail for a decade or so, I got my fill of certain bands, is all.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 12 June 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I like SOME dead. Their countrier stuff.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you're on to something there, generally the more rootsier they were, the better it was. i have trouble with some of their more overtly psychedelic stuff

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I dated a would-be deadhead once and had to endure a lot of them. So I learned to look for something I could tolerate. To my surprise/delight, I found that when they were in jugband mode, they were real good.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

There can NEVER be too many invokations to the celestially malevolent majesty of K I L L I N G J O K E

four years pass...

ITT (In This Thread)

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 22 May 2008 08:07 (seventeen years ago)

Stone Temple Pilots (aka Stone Pimple Pilots)

What we called them was the Aztec Temple Pirates. I have to admit that the "Pimple" thing is pretty clever though.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Thursday, 22 May 2008 13:00 (seventeen years ago)

regarding initial list... will oldham, jesus lizard, les savy fav, silver jews??? gotta wonder how those artists/bands made the cut for a hate list

Charlie Howard, Thursday, 22 May 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

You have Gibby Haynes to thank for that one. (xpost)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Thursday, 22 May 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

-Lesbians. Any band with lesbians at all.
