trustworthy record labels?

I'm sure there are labels out there that we give the benefit of the doubt to....

Since I'm a Chicago lad, I'm biased and place trust in Bloodshot and Thrill Jockey. Drag City to a lesser extent, most credit for that going to Edith Frost. And Sympathy for the Record Industry, thanks to having El Vez, Holly Golightly, Detroit Cobras, Compulsive Gamblers, etc etc....

yours?

ham on rye, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Load, Gravity (that was until they started with that fag new wave shit), Dischord, Bulb, Thunder.

Ian Johnson, Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

not that i'm particularly label-loyal, but as far as giving the benefit of the doubt - to Winter&Winter and Mego, mebbe. at least these were the first two to come to mind.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Matador. I never give them the benefit of the doubt, but I don't have to. They still put out quality.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I assume we're talking about labels with fairly consistent output. OK then, for my money

Planet E
Ninjatune (incl. ntone, big dada)
Disko B
Emperor Norton
Leaf
Lo
and, yeah, Matador, actually

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Desoto when it was still around

Rhyme Sayers Entertainment (esp. now that they are distributing Metal Face Records and MF Doom stuff)

Matador

Touch & Go

Also, although the quality is all over the map, I have to give it up for Rhino, who do loving, exhaustive reissues of artists that no one else would dare, and always do an amazing job (Nuggets especially)

Matt Helgeson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Kranky (minus Godspeed)

King Kobra (King Kobra), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Past-Homestead,Xpressway,Ajax
The Present- Saturn (even though I think everthing is technically a reisse), Twisted Village,Abduction, Drag City
Used to be good, what happened?- Touch & Go,Matador, Flying Nun, Kranky

brg30 (brg30), Wednesday, 11 June 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll second Leaf. It's the new Warp

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 12 June 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Peekaboo Records - the Kiss-Offs (formerrly), Black Lipstick, Palaxy Tracks, Knife in the Water, generally good quality stuff, though as a regional indie releases are pretty rare

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 12 June 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

kompakt.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 June 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, I'm more likely to buy without question some reissue house like trikont or soul-jazz - whatta fogey!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 June 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

4 Men w/Beards seems pretty consistent on reissues, expensive though

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 12 June 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, for 'buy' read 'download'

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 June 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

thanx for the tip though! *raids coffers*

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 12 June 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

A. solid: 5rc, load, bulb, def jux, soul jazz, acute/pawtracks/carpark ... free porcupine society (i have high hopes out of 2/2...)

B. mostly solid: troubleman, gsl (coming back lately), dischord, warp (is it slipping?), french kiss, narnarck (upcoming), dim mak (upcoming)

C. is/was solid with occasional wonders: gravity, vermiform (only cause it's r.i.p.), drag city, kill rock stars, touch and go (yawn?), tigerbeat6, skingraft

the merge/matador/subpop/teenbeat/thrill jockey/beggars banquet indie super system exists kind of between B and C... i'm weary of pigeoning...

Oh. I read the title of this thread and got all excited, thinking someone was going to list a bunch of record companies that don't rip their artists off! But alas, no.

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

a bunch of record companies that don't rip their artists off

here is the list:

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

er, i meant to say,

here is the list:

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, precisely.

We have no one but ourselves to blame. I mean, we even had Iron Maiden read through our contracts. They took out all the illegal stuff about lisencing and publishing, but if I read the small print, I seem to have sold my soul to some bloke named Edward?

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:45 (twenty-two years ago)

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i like labels. certain one have yet to disappoint me. moshi moshi music. on-u sound. superglider. melodic. i have high hopes for 13 amp once it up and running again.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

why is 13amp on the skids?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 12 June 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know if they rip off their artists, but i know i will enjoy what soul jazz is putting out.
also k records, merge, leaf, geographic... hmmm, and primerospasitos :-)

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 12 June 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

re 13 amp. funding was orig from ministry of sound who pulled plug - hence delay of the joy zipper album .. but all has been resolved now and mercury are stepping up. so 13 amp is back on full power (soz).

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 12 June 2003 10:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Looking at my collection, the labels with the best track records are Too Pure and Time Stereo. Everything I've bought from these two labels have been pure gold, with two exceptions: Seely's Julie Only (from the former) and Control Panel's Technological LP (from the latter).

Ernest P. (ernestp), Thursday, 12 June 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

What Ian said and 5RC

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Leaf Label , mmm, "fourthed"!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 12 June 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Dada (the majesticons and NMS and King Geedorah albums kick ass!!!)

stevie (stevie), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
Is any record label a genuine seal of quality anymore?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

kompakt.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Aren't there three or four labels under the "Kompakt" umbrella right now?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

shhh!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Morr Music

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Warp is still consistently high. I mean records they release that might be considered rub are only so in comparison to some of their other things, but generally speaking they don't release no shit.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 22 December 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

crippled dick hot wax, but it's mostly collections.

kinski (kinski), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Here is a question, who releases music similar in style to what Kompakt offers, but most of the releases are shit?

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 22 December 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I still love Load wholeheartedly and unquestionably. Lots of their new shit is amazing--the Kites LP, the Vincebus Eruptum album (AMAZING!!!!) and the new USAISAMONSTER are great. I'll at least give stuff on Dischord a good thorough "thinking about buying."

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course you do. Aren't you from RI?

Also, Tzadek is great if yer tuff enuff.

TEH ONE AN ONLEY DEANN GULBAREY (deangulberry), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

(Tzadik, even :)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the answer, Mark Pitchfork???

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

My apologies for the error. I'm curious as to what the difference is between Tzadik and Tzadek? Are they both alternate spellings of the same word? Hebrew scholars?!

TEH ONE AN ONLEY DEANN GULBAREY (deangulberry), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

YES I AM FROM RI.

You creep.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tresor, Submerge

the music mole (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

there are still a number of labels i buy and enjoy everything on. fierce panda, clairecords, and the new rough trade. i buy everything on static caravan, but i wouldn't say i love it all unconditionally.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Greensleeves

Someone tell me they have ever been disappointed by a Greensleeves purchase ...

mentalist (mentalist), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

static caravan is less spotty than clairecords. i am amazed that earlier someone said the only less than worthwhile thing on too pure has been Seely, I wonder if they have heard the French, or the Keys, or Scout Niblett. Too Pure may have had the best first 50 or so releases of any label ever though.
