How is the new Joe Budden?

I'm very curious, heard some of his mixtape stuff and Pump it Up is on the radio every five seconds where I live. But, I'm a little skeptical since New York keeps trying to sell me on a new "successor" to Biggie and Jay. First it was maybe Memphis Bleek, then Jadakiss, then Beanie Sigel (who is from Philly, but you know what I mean), then finally 50 Cent - not one of whom is as compelling as Biggie or Jay on their best day (in my opinion)....Now, Mr. Budden emerges as the current Drama King exclusive poster boy/Def Jam cash cow - So, what's the verdict from people that have heard it?

It's good. He's good. Better than most stuff in this slow hip hop year.

It's good, but he's no successor.

The whole album is worth hearing, but my favorite tracks are Fire, Pump it Up, and 10 Minutes.

i only gave the album one listen, but i've also heard some of his freestyles from a mixtape. he's a solid rapper but i haven't heard anything spectacular in him yet (altho maybe i haven't listened enough). no better than the g-unit crew i think tho certainly a difft. voice -- smoother and more rythmically consistent tho not necc. more adept.

the production on the album is fantastic tho.

i fell for the redman/jigga hybrid hype I'd heard (when will I learn?). Like Sterling said, he's solid but can't hold my attention, a few nice tracks.

ten years pass...

I don't really feel this song on mm2, but I just heard it acapella in Ice-T's documentary and it hit me:

Joe Budden as a phenomenon is so baffling to me as a rap listener who doesn't watch reality TV or listen to rap podcasts or read Complex or watch talk shows or listen to controversial radio interviews. Like he's one of the most prominent figures in hip-hop culture point blank but his timeline crossing over into things I care about is like

• Made one amazing song and decent album in 2003

• Fell off, was clowned in the blog era for pointless beef with Lil B & name spelled JOE BUDDDEN on his own CD

• Was part of Slaughterhouse albums that I listened to like once or twice

Like take away the sprawling ecosystem of extra-musical things a rapper does to survive in the internet era and he's like one of the dudes from Young Gunz or something

mixtape circuit liked him (but he wasn't like, Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, Gunplay or nuffin)
