Early 90s political, industrial rap is back!

On my stereo anyway. After years of neglect I've been downloading Consolidated, Meat Beat Manifesto, Disposable Heroes.

How brilliant! How raw! How fucking relevant! How much better than the sorry mess that is industrial, and sad MTV oriented, navel gazing nu-metal.

In 2003 I need bands like this again. Where are they? Where are the infuriated, shouty guys with a message? I want politics. I want megaphones and mini-essays, arguments with the audience. I want songs with statistics!

Dude, you seriously might like this band. Or you might think they're bullocks. Tis worth a shot.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious ... not bad. But still a bit rocky. And the lyrics are inward looking. I didn't catch the hard figures backing up their critique of US foreign policy.

Xii ... they have the right sound, but based on the first track they're half asleep. Where's the energy? (Couldn't download the others for some reason so this may be unfair)

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here are my top 5 shouty, political, industrial things to download.

- Consolidated : Infomodities 92

- Consolidated : America No. 1

- Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy : Hipocrisy is the Greatest Luxury

- Meat Beat Manifesto : Psych Out (not strictly political, but definitely shouty enough. NB : only the album version from 99%, the single sucks)

- Consolidated : Consolidated

Age of Chance?

I don't know what mp3 clips they have on the website, but try to find their cover of 'Prophets Of Rage' from some compilation.

I can't say I'm a big fan of the band except for that cover. I saw them live once and the lead singer apparantly thought it'd be cool to run a metal sander onstage and spray sparks into the audience.

you want to check out the work of jason leach in his groups: circa, royal blood and carrion crows. sounds somewhere along the line between cabaret voltaire and dj maxximus. awkward shouty political brit-rap over clunky soundsystem beatdown. other reference points would be the groups phil mentioned but filtered through the lens of super_collider or gold chains.

just came out on tresor as a 2 disc comp. called "21st century fix" by House of Fix. probably you all will hate it (though it rules).

try saul williams
"penny for a thought" would probably be well up your street

KMFDM to thread.

Ian Johnson, Friday, 13 June 2003 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

my reaction to the thread title would have been "goddammit"

but upon further investigation, it is "rock on, dude"

age of chance .. damn. that band changed my life. literally. nice to see someone else remembers them.
want some aoc goodies then www.ageofchance.com. the first band to use rock and hip-hop culture in one well designed package. but lack of smiles intinimated the pop kids so PWEI took the idea and milked if
for years to come... dont think any other band has fused the two genres in such a dramatic/abrasive and cohesive whole. like i said - they changed my life.
onwards ..

Asian Dub Foundation? Dead Prez?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 13 June 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

In 2003 I need bands like this again.

you might like Biig Juss and Eloheim's Nefilim Modulation Systems elpee - dissonant and funky and laden down with Bush samples and breaks that drop like daisycutters, and virulent word-daggers at the heart of all that is WRONG.

seriously, avant rap genius, like it should have an orange'n'black Impulse spine....

stevie (stevie), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

good pointed lyrics, thick with heavy facts, nice raw visceral delivery = Dead Prez as well as The Coup

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

- Meat Beat Manifesto : Psych Out (not strictly political, but definitely shouty enough. NB : only the album version from 99%, the single sucks)

You are insane, my friend. Every version of "Psyche-Out" rocks, particularly the paranoid whispery one.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, where are Carter USM when you need them eh??

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(x-post with Dan)

Meat Beat Manifesto : Psych Out (not strictly political, but definitely shouty enough. NB : only the album version from 99%, the single sucks)

I beg to differ! It just doesn't fit yr shouty political slant...oh wait, it does, it's just more subtle about it. Well I guess it's difficult to be subtle while shouting. (someone will come along with 10 examples of this now)

Are Consolidated the only band to turn their encores into political discussions with the audience?

What about Pop Will Eat Itself?

disco stu (disco stu), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the tips ...

Asian Dub Foundation is a good call.

I'm gonna check out Age Of Chance / The Coup / Big Juss / Dead Prez don't know them yet.

I think PWEI were a great, under-rated rap rock band. But political commitment didn't suit them. They got kind of heavy and dreary when they got serious. The opposite of Consolidated who were best when they were most engaged and a bit pointless when they tried to be lighter.

Have to say I don't know all the versions of Psyche Out. I'm still blown away by the 99% version. Others I've heard don't seem to have the same lyrics and have tended to make me yawn, but there may be versions I've missed.

Early '90s political, industrial rap worked the first time, didn't it?
