And are White Belt Bands different from Skinny Tie Bands?

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Le Shok

it sounds like "LE SPOCK"

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Make-Up.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Har har har! Nick S. wins! Didn't they actually write a song about their white belts, or did I just think they should?

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Or should it be "Who ARE The Quintissential White Belt Band?" I'm very confused. What side of the Atlantic am I on?

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yea, Nick Wins. They made a song about White Belts and covered "Biff Bam Pow"

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit dudes... LE SHOK made a song about White Ties!!!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

But were they SKINNY ties?

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

THE MAKE-UP

sarah mccormick (unsarah), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

LE SHOK HAS A SONG CALLED "TEENAGE ROBOTS"

QED

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

LE SHOK ALSO HAS SONGS WITH LOTS OF "HEY HEY HEY" PARTS!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

AND TWO SONGS ABOUT VICODIN AND HEROIN ON THE SAME ALBUM

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I see your point!

Now can anyone else think of any other White Belt Bands?

Are The Strokes really just a White Belt Band at heart?

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone seems to agree that White Belt Bands are something bad, but no one seems to provide any examples (other than the Make Up who don't suck) and no one can tell me exactly what they are!

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Fashionable bands!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

other than the Make Up who don't suck

! You like the Make Up? How strange. Never occurred to me that you might be a fan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, come on Ned, Make-Up are fucking great. I'd be shocked if kate wasn't a fan, at least an teeny ickle bit.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 12 June 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bleh on the Make-Up and Svenonius, I'm sorry. They never caught me interest either as art project or as a band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna be a big fish, in a small pond, COME ON LET'S SPAWN!!! WHOOOO!

Svenonius annoys me, but the Make-Up are all about the BASS!!

kate (kate), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

One time I was in D.C. staying at the Pirate House. A bunch of us piled into a van to go see some "fashion show" thing that the Make-Up were playing. We got kinda lost on the way, and weren't sure if we should get a parking spot and look for the venue, until Guy Piccioto spotted two kids in white belts. He said "They're going to see the Make-Up, we're here." And he was right.

Blondie?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis Presley (the Vegas years)

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Thursday, 12 June 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i thort this meant metaphorical belts like the "steel belt" "rust belt" "black belt" "borscht belt" -- i.e. areas of population/production concentration.

so like the "white belt" would be the dmb/hootie/squirrel nut zippers tour circuit.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 12 June 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

White belts and compact cocaine mirrors... San Diego five years ago to thread!

heh Jon i love that buns pic..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 13 June 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

antioch arrow, perhaps, as told in this month's good-once-you-get-past-the-obligatory-we've-gotta-hook-the-kids-so-let's-call-gravity-a-"screamo"-pioneer-label-first-paragraph "alternative press" article. (subscribing to the "common knowledge dictates..." theory.)

hstencil, i was just talking to a friend from DC about spiv last night and how bizarre it is that he seems constantly "in character." can you see him standing in line at the post office or something (shades of that line in "ghost world" [the comic] about feeling weird going to taco bell in one's vintage getup).

also, i guess he's always standing around with ian mackaye, talking. this seems ripe with comedic potential to me.

chris smith, Friday, 13 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there was supposed to be a question mark at the end of paragraph two, i.e. this was not conceived in some delillo/wideman prose stylee

chris smith, Friday, 13 June 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Antioch Arrow was a little too thrashy to be the ultimate white belt band. We need a band that gets every girl with black hair and a slightly fatass taking photography courses to shake her booty!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

and i will be in the audience as a result!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Article about being in an Antioch Arrow tribute band.

AA is so fucking amazing....

http://www.gravityrec.com/

go look @ the quicktime of them.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 13 June 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The first band I remember rocking that look was Cupid Car Club, but the San Diego kids--Antioch Arrow and others--soon followed. And then the Make-Up of course, and then, and then and then andrrrrrrgh.

The Strokes aren't a white belt band. They used to wear their belts with the buckle off-center, though.

Also: if you're wearing a white belt you've got a 'half cleveland' going on. White belt plus white shoes = a full cleveland.

die9o (dhadis), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(hello boyer, will see you very soon.)

die9o (dhadis), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't make me post pictures of Jules in a white belt to prove the Strokes are a white belt band!

kate (kate), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Clearly, the Strokes are the Avril Lavinge of the white belt.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

::shoots self::

kate (kate), Friday, 13 June 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Bzzt! Wearing a white belt does not make you a white belt band.

die9o (dhadis), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Fie! Fie!

kate (kate), Friday, 13 June 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Smith --
I used to serve The Spiv his coffee at a couple of different D.C. Starbucks' (Dupont Circle; Woodley Park) ca. '94, and I can tell you first-hand: He is ALWAYS on.

Ben Boyer, Friday, 13 June 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

perhaps i'm delirious with coffee rage but this is the funniest thread i've ever read on ilm.

thank you.

msp, Friday, 13 June 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm still trying to figure out the Guy = Spiv thing.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 13 June 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

al,

guy isn't the spiv. ian svenonius was "ian the spiv" in nation of ulysses... a definite early contender in the white belt promenade.

m.

msp, Friday, 13 June 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to serve The Spiv his coffee ... He is ALWAYS on.

He IS. Like a tiny lisping force of nature in fancy pants. DC rock stars are generally nice people but he always copped an attitude with me.

adam (adam), Saturday, 14 June 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Off topic but... In '95 or so i was walking down an unpopulated side street in Georgetown with a friend and who should we spot in the distance walking towards us? None other than Ian the spiv, jamming out and dancing to what must have been the bumpinest, greasiest soul song ever on his walkman. So we continue to approach, talking amongst ourselves about how good that tune must be to shake that many moves out of someone on an empty street at 3:00. The punchline of course is that as we finally got to where he was we realized that he wasn't wearing a walkman at all.

BTW, Ian was always a perfect gentleman whenever i had any dealings with him...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

also doesn't the delta 72 at least get an honorable mention in getting this started?

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 03:18 (nineteen years ago)

Screw anyone on this site who still tries to claim that The Make-Up are a white belt band! Yes, they might be considered a hipster band, but they're way too esoteric to be a white belt band!

I live in the Silverlake/Echo Park area of LA, which is ground zero for hipster posturing, so let me just say that BEFORE you visit the Make-Up, you should consider the following:

Peaches
Ladytron
Fischerspooner
The Locust
PGMG
The Killers
The Strokes
The White Stripes
etc....

jsoulja (jsoulja), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

They don't sound like one, but Keane always where White Belts.

Even though I might get Dog-Piled on, I really like Keane.

Voodoo Child, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but he's lookin' at that guy like "Dude, I can't believe you wore a white belt to the awards show. By the way, I will sex you up later."
It's a love/hate thing.

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

eight years pass...

I FOUND A WHOLE BAG OF WHITE BELTS!!!

In the pile of "things I haven't looked at since I bought the house but are now so mouldy and dusty that I'm having terrible allergy attacks for no reason."

Why do I own a bag of white belts. (well, not any more as they are now mould coloured and the rubbish bin owns them) Random shit one buys on tour. I was sure that there was a joke here tha I had missed.

Lamp, Tuesday, 18 February 2014 17:13 (eleven years ago)

Too true, too true.

(I'm gonna see if I can dig out a Make-Up CD now, since I had the Jonathan Fire*eater out the other night...)

PERSONAL ARCHEOLOGY INDEED.
