I don't think the "Cherry Poppin' Daddies" are living up their name anymore?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

They are back in ska bands -- or they are still busy dissecting Drumline and its inaccurate portrayal of life in college marching bands.

Andy K (Andy K), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The "Swing scene" here had a nasty crossover with Boston area skinheads

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 12 June 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I do like this picture of them from 1991, apparently:

THE ROFFLES OF TRAGEDY

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Unfortunately, the neo-swing craze had also run its course, and the band's 2000 effort "Soul Caddy" found itself a stranger in a strange land of boy-band bland, monster-voice metal and a president who thinks jazz comes from Utah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:35 (nineteen years ago)

Christ, I think 1996-era Skid Row had more dignity. I think the *current* version must have more!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:37 (nineteen years ago)

JESUS H. they played about only 20 blocks away last night! No wonder I didn't feel like going out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:38 (nineteen years ago)

whatever haters. They still have a gold record, and you still probably live in momma's basement.

Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom), Sunday, 8 October 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

i like the idea of theCPD having 'haters' in 2006

tremendoid (tremendoid), Sunday, 8 October 2006 01:15 (nineteen years ago)

Anything that gets them through the night.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:57 (nineteen years ago)

A trend from 10 years ago is played out? Take that you people who made lots of money from it!

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Sunday, 8 October 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

I like the idea of CPD having 'lots of money' in 2006.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 8 October 2006 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

i didn't even hate them when they had a hit! i just hated their name! though not the singer's name, which i think was "steve perry," right? or his voice, which sounded kind of like the guy in the blasters, unless i'm getting him confused with the guy in royal crown revue or whatever they were called. (actually, i think they both kind of sounded like the guy in the blasters.) anyway, their crappy hit, whatever it was called, was no worse than crappy hits by many other '90s alt-rock bands, and better than most. "pull a comb through your coal black hair" is actually a sexy line, in a way. also (like Royal Crown Revue) they were more a jump-blues revival than a swing revival, but nobody seemed to get that (maybe not even the band) at the time. but they started out mod, I think!

"they were more a jump-blues revival than a swing revival, but nobody seemed to get that (maybe not even the band) at the time."

I thought the jump/swing thing was fine at first, but when it started to get more "swing jazz" than "jump blues," it lost me. As a man who's always preferred Johnny Otis to Tommy Dorsey, and thought Louis Jordan was way superior to Glenn Miller, I found I had no use for the Big Bad Cherry Poppin' Sugar Babies or whatever the hell they were. Even "The Curly Shuffle" was more sincere.
