Over the last few months, I've found that the website for turntablelab has been one of the very best sources for witty and spot-on accurate record reviews, mainly for hip hop, reggae, dance music and the like. They've just posted their monthly update and it's as uplifting and generally fine as ever, from what I've read thus far!

Yeah, they're pretty cool. They do sell a lot of bootlegs ("reissues"), though.

you make it sound like it's a bad thing. you're probably going to talk about how the artist isn't getting any, yada yada. but the music must be heard. most of that stuff they sell is going for 100s on ebay.

the site's great. i've been going there for years. i love that they have listening clips for most of the stuff. i bet dustygroove is too afraid to do that, because you'd know they're lying about how fuggin wonderful their stuff is.

i miss the djs top ten that they used to feature. they were pretty funny and gave you an insite into some obscure goodies.

I love that site, it's now my go to site for new hip hop.

i looked at their baltimore club section and the reviews ooze the patronizing attitude towards "real" that people always presume upon mo'wax fans / crate-diggers.

and i quote ... "You got sack like a new jack if you play this out (they do in B-More)". please!

Well, yeah, that's what I was going to say. It's ridiculous that some punk is making ugly copies of an out-of-print release and makes buckets of money. Stores like TTL and Sandbox know very well that they sell dirty product, but refuse to admit it if you ask them about it. I know it's frustrating to not be able to buy legitimate copies of good music, but to me it's unacceptable to support bootleggers, If you want to hear it, download it, I say.

I usually like the little reviews that TTL writes. They seem to be pretty honest (negative), as is Aquarius.

four years pass...

People are quick to hate on Rawkus these days, but you can't deny this collection. Every track on here is not only worth having on a label comp, but pretty damn outstanding. It's mostly filled with Mos Def / Talib related material... expand review (which stacks up to a nice chunk of change) but you also get harder to find / forgotten tracks like Styles P & Pharoah's "The Life(1)" and Big L's "Flamboyant(2)."

who the fuck thinks 'flamboyant' and the styles/pharaohe joint are hard to find or forgotten?? fuck turntable lab

Check it out bro - this dude Andre Legacy is 1/2 Armenian and 1/2 Russian and he's mad tall and has an afro AND he's from Hollywood. And he raps! See that shit is funny and you haven't even heard the music... expand review yet. He's also got a group called Dyslexic Speedreaders with his boys Dirt Nasty and Mickey Avalon who are both all over this album. Sometimes dude likes to keep it chill ("He Said She Said(1)"), sometimes he likes to go on a "Bender(2)," sometimes he just needs to remind you who he is and what he's about ("It's The Legacy(3)"). I'm saying, dude has mad varied styles - if you don't believe me just check the first and last tracks, "Blow Off My Dick(4)" and "My Dick(5)." (Actually woah, maybe this is a concept album?? ) He also namechecks Flex, Clue and Kid Capri in "DJ Dying(6)" so dude is obv. up on his rap history. If you don't like this shit... you probably aren't cool enough anyway!! Go listen to some French rave bro. Production by Cisco Adler, Beardo and more. 13 tracks. -suicide bangs

there's still some good stuff and reasonable prices at ttl, but the more I think about it, the more I realize the site went from nerdy obnoxious soul/funk/hip hop purist trainspotters into some ny-come-l.a. scenester crap. still, some good stuff there too

Man, I used to love reading TTL. Their review of 'Bizarre Love Triangle' was burned into my memory from the first time I read it:

Strangely this track has been strongly adopted by the Asian community as an unofficial anthem. It's like the Asian "Scenario" or something. When this drops, they get crunk and stab each other with calculators (It's ok, I'm a chink). Moreover, in my opinion, this track represents a perfect pop new wave song. The cheesy hook, that keyboard work' the rolling synth breakdown. Recently heard it at a trendoid keg party, and actually liked hearing it. A bit refreshing if you axe me. Features the original mix(1), the remix (the one on Substance), and State of the Nation.
