Radiohead - Where I End and You Begin

These lyrics drive me almost crazy. "There is a gap in between. Where I end and you begin." Is there a better description of the impossibility of love? There will always be a canyon between two individuals. We will never meet as there will always be an infinity of empty space between us. The otherworldly synthesizer sounds when Yorke sings "I'm up in the clouds". The end is the resolution: "I will eat you alive." Like as if that is the only way to come close to another. Another favourite.

where radiohead ends and depeche mode begins

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Sehr schöne deutsche kongeniale Besprechung.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I'm not the only one who heard Depeche Mode in that song.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i am tired of people criticizing music as it sounds like some other music. what's the point? good contemporary music incorporates the best of the music canon. depeche mode is part of that canon in my book anyways. in any case there is more to this song than dm. the trance-like drumming, the celestial synthesizer and the "and" separating you and me. the guitar sounds a little bit like the edge from u2 by the way as the german reviewer rightly remarks. which is not a bad thing neither. at least for people my age.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

for some reason i got a simple minds/tears for fears/U2 vibe from that song. it's definitely got an 80s itch to it. i dont think that lessens its value in any way, it's just that those floating, quivering ondes martenot licks bring the sound of the song back a few decades. i wouldnt be opposed to marrying jonny, just as long as thom gives him his "h" back.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex, I didn't say I didn't like the song! Or that it could be "reduced" to Depeche Mode (it just reminded me of DM at one point). And I otherwise agree with you about "criticizing music for sounding like other music" -- I mean, shit, my favorite record last year was Interpol. So, good times, man!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 25 June 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry jaymc, i am just desperately looking for someone making valid points concerning this song. without referencing old stuff. i didn't go for the interpol yet. though i am quite tempted...

four years pass...

This song is so danceable.

youcangoyourownway, Sunday, 2 March 2008 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah it is! I love it when the bass kicks back in at 2.53. And the "I will eat you alive"s.

I didn't like this song when I first heard HTTT, but I gradually came to love it and now I think it's my favorite thing they've recorded this decade.

!Alicia!, Monday, 3 March 2008 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

It *is* the best thing they've recorded this decade.

Matt DC, Monday, 3 March 2008 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

Demo's pretty interesting as well, got that around somewhere.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 March 2008 01:00 (eighteen years ago)

This song has a real nice sound to it, yeah. I like the part where it sounds like he's speaking in a far away room or whatever. I'm trying to give HTTT another try as a whole because I didn't dig most of it at the time and since I changed my tune with Rainbows I can't see why HTTT should be any more difficult.

Bimble, Monday, 3 March 2008 03:14 (eighteen years ago)

HTTT is such a great, great album.

HI DERE, Monday, 3 March 2008 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

the 'I will eat you alive and there'll be no more lies' bit scares the crap out of me. But in a really good way/

joedee, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 13:25 (eighteen years ago)

one of the numbers from that record i actually get into...maybei should give it another chance.

save, kida/amnesiac it tends to take me atleast a year to figure out i like a radiohead record...

bb, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

I think HTTT is good, but too long. I could lose Punch-Up, Myxomatosis and Wolf At The Door, I think, and prefer it.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

looking for it now...i have the silly special edition, so its in a stack of shit somewhere...

bb, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

But yeah, Where I End... is oen of my favourite Radiohead songs, easily.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 13:56 (eighteen years ago)

I think HTTT is good, but too long. I could lose Punch-Up, Myxomatosis and Wolf At The Door, I think, and prefer it.

But these songs are essential! I'd get rid of some of the snoozier tracks in the middle like the Gloaming and Sail To The Moon

the next grozart, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

I love Sail to the Moon, though I've gathered it's not one of the more popular tracks.

chap, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Junk. Sounds like something Junkie XL would do with Muse's lead singer.

tati1, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

Not my favorite song on the album, by far.

Jordan, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

i like "sail to the moon," i like how spacious it is, same goes for "the gloaming". i think i'd lose "sit down, stand up" or "go to sleep"

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

But "Go to Sleep" is the only good track on the entire album.

tati1, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

Backdrifts is my favourite.

chap, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

I love "Where I End..."

Let's all just agree that HTTT is too long and could've done with some editing. Personally don't like "The Gloaming", "Go To Sleep" or "Myxomytosis". And I prefer the version of "I Will" that was on that HTTT b-sides album.

Roz, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

let's just agree that everyone likes completely different tracks on HttT and that we've discussed it a million times!

Jordan, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

The best 10 tracks on HTTT > the 10 tracks on In Rainbows

stephen, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

stephen OTM, even if we can't agree what those 10 tracks are

HI DERE, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:56 (eighteen years ago)

(HTTT is leagues better than In Rainbows and I liked In Rainbows a good bit)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

agreed. i've listened to HttT more recently than IR.

Jordan, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 00:00 (eighteen years ago)

Videotape >>>most things on HTTTTTT

W4LTER, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

It's true, I feel like no two people have the same HTTT preferences. Personally, I think "Go to Sleep" is boring, definitely the worst single they've released since "High and Dry". Love "Myxomatosis" and "2+2=5", and have never warmed up to "Wolf at the Door"

"Where I End and You Begin" is the winner though, by a hair.

Z S, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

In Rainbows>>>>HTTT

Scik Mouthy, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

I listen to "In Rainbows" about as often as I listen to "Pablo Honey." Which is never.

I listen to "Hail to the Thief" about as often as I listen to "OK Computer." Which is often.

!Alicia!, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:06 (eighteen years ago)

On balance I think HTTT is my favorite Radiohead album.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

nah they both sort of suck equal amounts of ass

teflon monkey, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Radiohead ended for me when I hurled a disc of OK Computer out a window.
