...and the answer is a resounding "yes."

I care, but not enough to spend 50 dollars for a ticket.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 14 June 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

is he coming to NYC or Philly?

yes, where was this announced? even bowie with tin machine was worth it live (being able to see this in a smallish theatre and getting to stand right in front had a lot to do with this though). I skipped his last tour since it was with moby and a bunch of other people I didn't care to see, but if it were just him I don't think my wife would forgive me for not taking her.

I think it was announced Friday, or at least it was on BowieNet...his European leg of the tour goes on sale in a few weeks, with the Dandy Warhols supporting; he's also rumored to be hitting Asia and Australia this time around as well.

Having seen him over the past few years, I can say that his band is stellar, his song selection is for the most part eclectic, and as much as I hate to say it, he ain't gettin' no younger. I'm still skeptical of this whole Matrix connection, but I'll try to keep an open mind about all of it.

Has he re-canted on his vow circa the Sound + Vision tour that he'd never play certain songs again?

He recanted on that implicitly some time back. In 1995 he was more or less sticking to it -- the only old songs he played were drastically rearranged album cuts like "Andy Warhol" or "The Man Who Sold the World," while the most well known song performed was "Under Pressure." But since then various songs have crept back into the repetoire, as the bonus disc that came with the BBC sessions release shows...

From what I understand, the entire catalog is fair game, although I think some tracks (like "Young Americans") might stay dead. His current concerts seem to be sprinkling in more esoteric album cuts -- "Always Crashing In The Same Car," "Repetition" -- to grand effect, along with the usual quasi-hits. For my money, I'd love to bury "Under Pressure" once and for all.

I have to admit that when I saw the Dandy Warhols support Bowie last year, well, the Dandy Warhols came across like boring, dull, jaded, pretentious wankers, and David Bowie came across as charming, charismatic and an incredible performer. So yeah, I'd reccomend it.

Though Wembley Arena? I hate that place, I'm giving it a miss, DW's or no. There is a threshold across which a venue just gets too big for me to enjoy the show. (No, I'm not saying that as an indie wanker, I'm saying that as an old woman who likes to be able to see and be comfortable.)

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, the Ahoy arena is also not my kinda place, but hey, it's DB and if a shithole is the only place where he's going to perform then into the shithole I go!
