Why Are the Beastie Boys So Underrated?

Why are the Beastie Boys so underrated? 'Paul's Boutique' is still more adventurous and intelligent than most of the hip-hop that's out there! I really hoped that it would revolutionize the genre because it didn't sound like the same old stuff - but I'm still waiting for the rap world to catch up. Isn't there anyone out there who would like to see a bit more creativity in the rap genre?

Skratch, Saturday, 14 June 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if they make sure to acknowledge shorty's birthday.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 June 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

This question makes no sense to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 June 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

In a way it's true. They have many many fans but at the same time they've never been included in any of the gangs in the hiphop playground. The mainstreamers dislike them cos they're white and the undies don't like them cos they sell a lot of records. Maybe that's a generalisation but I'd say most people don't even think of them as a hiphop band.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 14 June 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

they're underrated cuz the track listing on their anthology is really shitty. Once a solid best of comes out they'll get a few more props. the underrating also is always in effect when they don't have a new album out. When Hello Nasty was large, people were shrieking their glory everywhere. It's those fisheye lens videos that make people remember respect is due.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 14 June 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"more adventurous and intelligent than most of the hip-hop that's out there!" "Isn't there anyone out there who would like to see a bit more creativity in the rap genre?"

i get the impression that you don't have a clue as to what is really out there. i hear this same bullshit all the time regarding hip hop. this has more to do with what avenues you choose to expose yourself to new hip hop than to what good hip hop is really out there.

you can't listen to good hip hop if you are looking in all the wrong places.

faggotry (faggotry), Saturday, 14 June 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

that's really helpful faggotry, you must really know your stuff.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 14 June 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i try. but what about your equally piercing reply, dog?

faggotry (faggotry), Saturday, 14 June 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Faggotry is a great name. Like, Lincoln great.

jm (jtm), Saturday, 14 June 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

you can't just say "oh you think the beastie boys are so good, well obviously you know nothing about what's good" without giving some kind of example. I declare your reply null and void.

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 14 June 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

a) they're not under-rated, so there b) current sampling laws make it impossible (or extremely expensive) to release such a sample-heavy record like Pauls Boutique these days.

Furthermore: c) most people who are familiar with the Beastie Boys would consider them a Hip-Hop act of some sort, I'd say. d) they released a solid best of in 1999.

JoB (JoB), Saturday, 14 June 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

they're frat boys

Anony-mouse (King Kobra), Saturday, 14 June 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

faggotry probably likes real hip hop like Fiddy Cen

the Beastie Boys will remain great in my eyes and to my ears, right up to 'Hello Nasty' which was inventive and lots of fun. 'Alive' was also a decent track although of course their style of delivery was getting tiresome. not sure what they could offer now, don't want to hear that anti-war record they made and would rather just preserve the pleasant memories.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 14 June 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fiddy Cen"? What, is he dancehall now?

Also:

The mainstreamers dislike them cos they're white
Ha ha

and the undies don't like them cos they sell a lot of records.
Ha ha ha ha oh jesus

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 14 June 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"faggotry probably likes real hip hop like Fiddy Cen"

well you like p diddy. we can all be funny together! ha ha.

"you can't just say"

faggotry can type anything.

"oh you think the beastie boys are so good, well obviously you know nothing about what's good"

faggotry didn't type that.

"without giving some kind of example"

but faggotry wants to be like you. for example:

"They have many many fans but at the same time they've never been included in any of the gangs in the hiphop playground"

what gangs in the hip hop playground? i need all of the necessary examples, citations and/or footnotes.

"The mainstreamers dislike them"

exactly who are the mainstreamers? i need proper citation.

"undies don't like them cos they sell a lot of records"

i need specific examples. after this, i need proof that these examples aren't just exceptions. thanks.

"Maybe that's a generalisation but I'd say most people don't even think of them as a hiphop band."

who are these most people?

"I declare your reply null and void."

is that why you replied?

I award him 5 points for his name, and a billion zillion for his response to dog latin. A+ work.

David Allen, Saturday, 14 June 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

???????

Who is underrating the Beastie Boys? What planet are you from, Skratch? If anything, to my mind, the Beasties are treated with a reverance normally reserved for royalty.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 June 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the beastie boys are INSANELY overrated

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 14 June 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

just like everyone else who sold a big loada records

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Beastie Boys divorced themselves -- intentionally or not -- from "the rap game" a damn long time ago. Paul's Boutique was indeed light years ahead of its time, and came out in an era when Sex Packets by Digital Underground (itself admittedly a whole lotta fun) seemed to be Hip Hop's order of the day. Around the era of Check Your Head (an album seemingly more aimed at by-then-easily-demographized "alternative" fans), I think the Beasties drifted too far from Hip Hop to ever re-introduce themselves to that audience (who probably don't even consider their work after License to Ill worth listening to). I'd go as far to say that the Beastie Boys now, even if their stock seems to be sinking rather swiftly, are a genre unto themselves.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

another problem with the beastie boys has been that the greatness of their records (their great records - Licensed to Ill, Paul's Boutique) had more to do with Rick Rubin or the Dust Brothers than with the Beasties themselves.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dust Brothers in writing "High Plains Drifter"/"Stop That Train"/"3 Minute Rule" lyrics shockah! (Though I do admit that it takes a huge chunk of genius to make the Eagles sound dope)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 14 June 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Also is there any truth to that legend that one of 'em (Mike D maybe) was looking through demo tapes with Rick Rubin and he was all "oh sign this guy, he's dope, he sounds like Kool Moe Dee" and it turns out to be LL?

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 14 June 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently, one of the reasons the Beasties did leave Def Jam was because they wanted to throw Mike D out of the Beasties Boys, and make them a duo.. which they figured would have been more marketable.

no, I'm pretty sure the talk of dropping Mike D was before they signed with Def Jam.

trife (simon_tr), Sunday, 15 June 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They're underrated because they made their last good album in 1989.

On second thought, they're not.

Anybody else notice how both "Rockstar" and "So Watcha Want" play funk as if they had sticks up their butt?

chuck, Monday, 16 June 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeh that whole NERD album sounds Grand Royal in the extreme...it reminded me of Russell Simins' solo record.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 16 June 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw the dust brothers do a live set, about 45 minutes of paul's boutique... to hear the music live and free of that annoying nasally squawk, shrill whining, and tuneless bark was really what sold me on the music.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 June 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"They're underrated because they made their last good album in 1989."

Maybe their last GREAT one, but everything since has been a'ight. The anthology could have redeemed lots of fine album tracks but only caught a few ("The Negotiation Limerick File" at least).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 16 June 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I heard "B-Boys making with the freak freak" on the college radio station and the opening line "Putting songs together ain’t no puzzle like yahtzee" made me turn off the radio.
