Why has history seemingly erased this album? Nary a track from it appears on the Eurythmics' best-of, and -- to my knowledge -- it has never seen a proper Stateside release on compact disc (relegated to a scarcity in import bins). If I'm not mistaken, there was some big falling out between the band and the film's director, Michael Radford, resulting in the band's music either being stricken from the film or reduced to a less prominent placement therein.

Regardless, I still think it's some of the most interesting music the Eurythmics ever came up with, from ambient instrumentals to pounding dance tracks, each imbued with an icy sense of futuristic paranoia and despair.

What say you?

Not out for puns.

Hm, got the Eurythmics' 1984 fairly recently m'self... "out of curiosity", kind of.(Though the cheapo price also figured) Had heard it before, and seen the film, etc. Dodn't find it a particularly bad album. Yet Hugh Hopper's 1984 sure sounds much more interesting to me :-)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 14 June 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

..."Doubleplusgood" is a weirdly fine chirp-along-athon, I give them that. And "Julia" a pretty instrumental vignette, sure doesn't outstay its welcome. ..."Ministry of Love" ain't worse than many a Peter Gabriel track of the time, eh?
Yet there's also lotsa chaff on this rekkid.

t''t, Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

"Julia" isn't an instrumental.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, right you are of course! - "Winston's Diary" was what i meant.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the single, sexcrime, was in my opinion, the worst track off this. for the love of big brother should have been the single instead. the track ministry of love is very good too.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sexcrime" is brilliant, if you ask me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 June 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

'ministry of love' is great.

I think it's 'In The Garden' that's overlooked, their best album by nine miles. They were still a weird rock band then, but open to odd arrangements. Co-produced by Conny Plank with great guests (Clem Burke, Jaki Leibezeit, Holger Czukay on french horn). Nothing from that album ever turns up compiled...

jl, Saturday, 14 June 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow...I didn't know Conny Plank was involved with that album. Damn.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 June 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever listened to this album? It is horrible...

Mike Taylor (mjt), Saturday, 14 June 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sexcrime" was included in the UK version of the Eurythmics' greatest hits CD. I know this because I purchased the Eurythmics' "Greatest Hits" in London, was thrilled by how every single one of my favorite Eurythmics songs were on the CD, came back home, looked at a copy Stateside, and was surprised to note there was no "Sexcrime" included therein. Hmmm.

And now we know the rest of the story! </voice="Paul Harvey">

never gonna cry again was the first eurythmics track i ever heard. the rest never quite lived up to that.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Sunday, 15 June 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and almost forgot - bbc2's best bits of the old grey whistle test showed never gonna cry again which holger czukay casually walks on with french horn and start to play along. not many singles have them these days, french horns that is or indeed a dual flute solo / middle 8.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Sunday, 15 June 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
"Sexcrime" is my favourite Eurythmics song I think. I have it on a compilation after a Frankie track from the same year - frighteningly grand pop.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"In The Garden" is a really great record. The production is almost gorgeously stoned sounding at times (see "Belinda", "Never Gonna Cry Again", title track). Hazy yet detailed, and Lennox sounds lovely. I need to listen to this again tonight.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I had 1984 but it was one of many albums from the era that I traded away long ago. I've seen it in the dollar bin; maybe I'll pick it up again.

one year passes...
Revive! Because (apparently) I have decided that tonight is Eurythmics night. I was working in a record store when it was announced that this was going to be deleted from the catalog (1993?)...as far as I know, it has never returned, but I think it's an overlooked masterpiece. No overstatement intended. Anyone other than me remember the video for sexcrime (empty tarmacks, helicopters, etc.)? I think it was good, but I doubt I'll ever have the chance to verify that.

John Justen (johnjusten), Thursday, 23 June 2005 03:44 (twenty years ago)

i remember the video, albeit vaguely. - best bet is to scour soulseek just in case.
it is a fine album.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

'julia' = the best song imo.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 23 June 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember helicopters, but I remember the band dressed in brown overcoats playing in the cold (you could see their breath).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 23 June 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

It is likely that I may have inaccurately mapped the helicopters into it via not seeing it for (gah!) 20 or so years.

John Justen (johnjusten), Friday, 24 June 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

it was on the tube. don't think i saw it anywhere else.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Friday, 24 June 2005 06:47 (twenty years ago)

2 single s- sexcrime and julia
i only like sexcrime and it's repetitive - it's their worst album .

jewelia, Friday, 24 June 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

it appears that the sexcrime video is on their greatest hits video from 91. - http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6302043042/103-6435058-7134210?v=glance
if someone buys the new and used from $1.98 i dare say they might tell us.

ten months pass...

Listening to this album today, and the opening song (above) sounds a little like the Atari 2600 version of The Downward Spiral.

I love how well done this parody is, I find it hard to not think about the Veryphonics.

I've never heard this one... maybe I should check it out. I've heard 'Touch' and 'Revenge', and was especially impressed by 'Touch'. Oh, and the singles collection of course!
