Sub-Trifean at best.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 June 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I like this list a whole lot. I protest the inclusion of the Eagles, though.

Am I missing something, or are the Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers not represented? That's not only ignorant, but criminal.

Also, I'm so sick of everyone rating "He Stopped Loving Her Today" so highly. I can think of at least 20 George Jones songs that I love more. "Mr. Fool" especially.

Carter Family are represented

Yeah "Mr. Fool" is A Plus Jones. And I am equally sick of "He Stopped Loving Her." But I was trapped in a cheap motel room out in the middle of nowheresville and I happened to flip on that CMT atrocity right when Jones belted that number out. I have to tell you: I have seen GJ dozens of times, have all his records, blahblahblah, but this performance was utterly sublime. He slowed that song down to a creepy-crawly speed of 5MPH and wrung every drop of emotion out of it. Unforgettable.

28. "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)"

29. "I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry"

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Sunday, 15 June 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

25. "Folsom Prison Blues"
27. "Fancy"

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 15 June 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Where the hell is "Blue Yodel"? Or "Walking After Midnight"? "Tennessee Waltz" should be much, much higher than 63. Like top 10. Looks like a decent list tho, I certainly can't claim to have heard more than around half of the selections.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Sunday, 15 June 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

A fair enough selection, given the source. But what're the politics behind putting "Stand by Your Man" at #1? Is it good 'cuz it's by a woman, or good 'cuz it's about standing by your man? Or good 'cuz it's a woman standing by her man? This is the ultimate country? Shit.

"Goodbye Earl" to thread.

Ah yes, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" is there. But kinda silly to not have the father of country music on that list as well.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Sunday, 15 June 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the best country song is obv "honky tonk angels" b/w "great speckled bird."
