Patrin to thread!

the reissue is great. i never had any idea just how good they were.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 June 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

great great stuff, if you're getting the reissue, get the vinyl. You will NOT be dissappointed.

chad (chad), Sunday, 15 June 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one? Radios Appear is beyond awesome (I have it on double CD with a bonus disc of EP stuff), and Living Eyes is unspectacular but good. It baffles me how any band that combined the best aspects of Blue Oyster Cult, the Ventures and the MC5 didn't have huge success outside of Australia. Then again, it also baffles me that you don't see people rocking old-school Holden Monaros in midwestern classic muscle car shows.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 15 June 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

they weren't even successful in australia, more's the pity. radio birdman fans should also check out 'distemper' by the new christs (rob younger's post-birdman band) - close to the best thing ever to come out of australia imho.

angelo (angelo), Sunday, 15 June 2003 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm going to assume by now you're all considering buying the Do The Pop and Tales from the Australian Underground compilations, which are full of fantastic stuff like this in SPADES.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 June 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

was anybody else REALLY fucking pissed when the Scientists cancelled their US tour earlier this year?

Kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 15 June 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Kingfish, because they're still here in Australia, haha!

Jim, I got hold of that Tales From the Aust U'ground compilation a couple of days ago. It is truly great. I grew up with this music and never appreciated it. Hindsight is a funny thing.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

same here, to an extent. i was a little too young for most of it, which is my unfortunate excuse..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 June 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, man! That stuff rocks. Real noisy. Can't understand why I never heard of them until I saw their SubPop re-issue on display at a Tower Records listening post. I put it on and got BLOWN AWAY!

barrel, Sunday, 15 June 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The biggest revelation for me so far has been with The Tactics' 'Standing At The Window'. I can't recall a post-punk track that has ever sounded so wired and crazy. Not without reason do the liner notes refer to speed psychosis. Is it just my copy, or is the song by The Numbers, 'Government Boy', completely absent in spite of the track listing?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I was referring to 'Tales From the Underground' above, not the Birdman reissue.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i love tactics, as i once sobbed to dave studdert when beyond drunk.

i wasn't there for birdman, and i get turned off by the "cult of..." rawk was never my big thing anyway. that said the two comps jim mentioned are sooo bloody good and make me smile.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 15 June 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

decent stuff but I have a hard time getting too excited (bands whose guitars are better than their vocals do that to me). About as essential as inessential late '70s rock can get.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 June 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Tactics' 'Standing At The Window'. I can't recall a post-punk track that has ever sounded so wired and crazy

in the early days, before he got sick of playing it, dave studdert used to go completely fucked up weird through the whole song - no typical amphetamine blank stare but instead eyes scrunched up and screaming his head off. btw, you can only just hear the poor keyboard part i played, mixed down heavily in the murk - it was done in a spare 1/2 hour at some crummy studio with my $10 organ plugged directly into the mixer : no chance of hearing what i was playing in real time, just hoping it'd sound ok.

phil turnbull (philT), Sunday, 15 June 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

as for the birdman re-issues, i've only got the sub-pop comp but that'll do me. everyone i knew was completely dissapointed with the ep and 1st album on their initial release simply because they sounded so crap - bad vinyl and all. but the re-mastering make them sound as they should have all the time - hard, fast and pop-fun.

phil turnbull (philT), Sunday, 15 June 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the Numbers track is definitely on there - in fact it's probably one of my favourite tracks on the comp (next tro "New King Jack" and "Hindu Gods (Of Love)"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 June 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh? Those two tracks you mentionedare five tracks apart on my listing. What the f*** have I got then? A test pressing? WEIRD.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

nah nah sorry i don't mean that's the track ordering, i mean they're my favourite tracks.. the Numbers track is after the Scientists track.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i forget: what was the Numbers BIG hit?

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Not on my CD!!! What the f***? I bought it at Egg Records second hand. I bet it's the faulty first pressing!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

crazy. i bought it on the week of release so you'd think it'd be the same pressing? i know that a couple of the tracks on CD1 are reversed on the track listing though.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Which somehow makes it all even more quintessentially Australian.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

that, and the fact that the Ups & Downs track was remastered from off-centre vinyl (which is ludicrous because a digital master exists?!?!)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaz, The Numbers' big hit was, I think, 'The Lights of the City'. But this track is from an earlier punkier incarnation. Allegedly, cos I can't find it!!!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, punkier. it's bleeding great. i can put a copy of the track online for you if you like.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i will look at home at my copy of said comp. can't remember...

brother/sister act? blonde? i can't remember that hit colin either...

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, brother sister I think.

The lights of the city
Come shining down on you
And suddenly you know
You're not alone anymore
The lights of the city
The lights are calling (calling)
And suddenly you realise
There's nothing there at all

My God. The brain is an extraordinary thing. How come I remembered that?

I remember now also having a bit of a thing for the girl in that band.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim, thanks for the offer, but I don't have the facilites to takje advantage of it.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)
