The Atomic Rooster, Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

What really should be on a comp called "The Best Prog Rock Album In The World... Ever!"?

The Atomic Rooster, Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Tubular Bells (Part 1) (edit)

Edit? SELLOUTS!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

And I've now forgotten what Tubular Bells sounds like by muddling it with Oxygene...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i wouldn't buy it for my dad but i might buy it for me!!

is it one those "remember you can't get this in the shops" deals?

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of great stuff there, very England-centric though... is this a Virgin Records release or something?

I love a very high percentage of the songs on that compilation, so yes, if my dad had any interest in getting albums, I wouldn't be against that one (though I'm an album person rather than compilation one)

Biggest surprise is the lack of Gong, but I guess they're making up for that with Steve Hillage.
Not a very good pick for a Hawkwind song...Awesome that they picked "Mumps" from Hatfield & the North!
There's definitely some songs I'd have scissored out and replaced with something more interesting, but overall a nice selection.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither would I buy it for my dad - only a couple of songs on there he'd like, I'm sure.
On the other hand, it'll never dawn on my son to get it for me, I'm positive. (I wouldn't mind having it, actually)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It's available from Tower.co.uk,hmv.co.uk,amazon etc and any normal record shop(its being advertised on adverts for Asda & Tesco)
Yeah I'd imagine its part of the Virgin series.
Any songs that should be on the album that aren't?

The Atomic Rooster, Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

only abt half those acts were on virgin, though

i'd drop one the elps ("lucky man") for starters and replace it with something henry cow ("nirvana for mice")

something SHORT by gong (haha possibly a problem): what's the song with a great bassline on camembert electrique, it wz totally their themetune

"ladies of the road" by king crimson (instead of barclay james harvest, who i always found unutterably dull and bland)

plus "the king will come" by wishbone ash!! — that can be instead of the steve hackett solo thingie, which i never heard i don't believe anyone else sane did either

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"ladies of the road" is the ugliest song recorded by anyone ever btw, in a good AND a bad way

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

...some Univers Zero would be welcome on such a comp, or wot?!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Sunday, 15 June 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this was a joke at first. Van Der Graff Generator is very "obscure" in my world, and it's hard to imagine a comp. containing tracks from them being advertised on TV. I don't know enough of this stuff at a glance to comment. No Soft Machine?

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 15 June 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

certainly v.hard to imagine it being advertised WITH a vdgg track!!

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 15 June 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Seconded for the Wishbone Ash track.
Perhaps we could compile a rival ILX triple cd Best Prog Rock Album In The World..ever!

The Atomic Rooster, Sunday, 15 June 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

did geir compile this?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 16 June 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

More worrying is that "Darkside of the 80s" appeared to be out for Fathers Day too. Does this mean that the Robert Smith generation now all have kids? I guess that would figure...

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

YES!!!! YESYESYESYESYES!!! HSA and I keep seeing these ads on the telly and threatening to buy it for each other. It looks great, doesn't it? Certainly better than the "Worlds Best Power Rock Ballads" which is also advertised for Fathers Day gifting.

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this mean that the Robert Smith generation now all have kids

yes and i have both compilations, the prog one was a present - i have a few kids on detention tonight and will torture them with it.

s.r.w. (s.r.w.), Monday, 16 June 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait till we have kids. "Oh, dear, has daddy been playing you his CRASS records again?"

"Oh, dear, has daddy been playing you his CRASS records again?"

All children should be introduced to Crass as early as possible in their development and should definitely know all the lyrics to "Big A Little A" before they go to either school or church for the first time.

Anyone seen the Tesco TV Ads for this album? Just what is the world coming to...

The Atomic Rooster, Monday, 16 June 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That Dark Side record is just a mish-mash, isn't it? Lloyd Cole and Billy Bragg on a GOFF record? Fuck AWF!

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothings as bad as that power ballads album. Who selects the tracks for these things?

The Atomic Rooster, Monday, 16 June 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Dark Side Of The '80's.... track 14....

"My god what is this evil that we've done?"

I'm surprised they haven't included "One Way" by The Levellers while they were at it - in fact I imagine they'd have quite happily put something by Crass / FOPI / The Mob / Rudimentary Peni / Subhumans / Zounds on there too if they could have licensed it easily.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

re Kids. the dayt my son picks up my Foetus collection out of choice will be the day I know I have been a Good Father.
somehow though i suspect that his will never happen ... personally i was a bit taken aback by both the comps.
presents for Fathers Day .. frag off, cheesy compilation cashin's always make me break out in a nasty rash .. the packaging for both comps (80's Goth one aswell_ is particularly nasty .. no doubt in 6 months they will be in the cheap bins for £4.99 and i'll pick em up and have a blast ..
What no Red Lorry Yellow Lorry on the Goth one .. sacriledge ..
onwards .. m.e/ireallylovemusic

mark e (mark e), Monday, 16 June 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe there will be a ' Best Krautrock Album In The World...Ever!' cd out in time for Xmas.

The Atomic Rooster, Monday, 16 June 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

How great would that be? Of course, they'd get it all wrong and put, like "Da Da Da" on it and ridiculous things with nought to do with Krautrock at all...

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

And The Scorpions, no doubt. :-(

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I can imagine some marketing genius putting "winds of change" on it to help it shift a few hundred thousand copies. Bastards.

They would probably still put Phil Collins on an album like "The Best Field Recordings Album...Ever!"

The Atomic Rooster, Monday, 16 June 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You can see some scary compilation albums here.

That's dreadful, but everyone should have a copy of shine on by house of love in their collection, so that makes up for it a bit...

(My friends have definitely been reading ILM too much, as at a party I was at, they tortured me all night long, first with Free Jazz, and then with The Shaggs, until HSA rescued me by using this weird electrical glowy thing to turn the stereo into a make-shift theremin.)

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

why were people listening to free jazz at a party!??!?!????!!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

We were in Stoke Newington.

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, i see... crouch end folks do cool jazz, hackney people hard-bop, it all makes sense now...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Stoke Newington is known for Free Jazz. Free Jazz and lesbians.

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's a specific point in any formal or semi-formal gathering where you definitely should listen to jazz - usually for about half an hour immediately after you've eaten, while you're still feeling mellow and reflective and before you're actually pissed enough to start reaching for Dub War / Killing Joke / Pop Will Eat Itself....

I don't think I'll be inviting Kate 'round 'though anuyway - if anyone were to start using a "weird electrical glowy thing to turn [MY] stereo into a make-shift theremin" then I'm afrais I'd be compelled to fuckin' deck 'em!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, don't blame me! It's my boyfriend! I mean, you're talking about a man who makes music out of the hum generated by the National Grid and insists that we listen to radio static in bed because it helps him "get to sleep at night"! It's not me that turned our bedroom into a Camera Obscura! I am house-trained! ;-)

kate (kate), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)
