ì-Ziq's 'Bilious Paths'

deserves a thread i think. mid 90s IDM with timpanis, jungle sirens and cyber-garridge leanings, its got a lot. listening to it now, it feels like half the sounds come at you screaming 'i took weeks nay months to create, you fucker!' it sounds like good IDM because its grandiose at points, ultra-dense, not minimal or too comtemplative (as you may feel Autechre have gone) and in a Summer where we're getting a third Terminator film this does not seem so absurd.

Greek letters invariably are a b'tch to get right here, alas

haven't heard this 'Ziq req yet :-(

it's 10000000000 times more oppressive than the andrew wk record (and not as good)

It's "alt gr" + "m", like this: µ-ziq. At a local record store, I was surprised they had (correctly) filed it under the letter "M", instead of "U". Admittedly, µ-ziq is one of the most pretentious artist names ever.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 16 June 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oppressive? not as good as AWK? explain!

stevem (blueski), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ha! yeah, i need to. my friend rich already took me to task for that post via email. i'm just gonna post our exchange:

Rich: Do you really find I Get Wet to be oppresive? It's always struck me as being primarily bubblegum. I don't know, I think it's weird that the u-ziq album got to you, considering that you said that you liked Squarepusher's noisy shit the best and I think that that's even worse than u-ziq, because almost all of ziq's tracks have some sort of melodic base. I don't really get where you're coming from.

Me: I Get Wet is oppressive. I still like it, but it really is an assault. It's vision is singular and direct, and every energy is focused on one single thing. The u-ziq record I found oppressive for the opposite reason -- the vision is so scattershot, but every energy is focused on EACH of those things. I found it really hard to listen to.

Rich: What do you mean "vision?"

So, by oppressive, you mean really dense?

Me: By vision I mean goal.

Yeah, really dense. But more than that... Hmm...

Rich: So, what's the goal of Bilious Paths?

I don't know, in light of recent shit by Autechre, Aphex and especially the last Squarepusher record, I though Paths was difficult, but far from impenetrable.

Me: I'd have to listen again.

You say difficult as if I didn't understand it. Maybe I didn't wanna work my ears that hard? I prolly just didn't give it a fair shake.

Rich: No, I say difficult as if it took me a few listens before I could really process what was going on (which it did). Every time I listen to it, though, it becomes less of a sort of battle. It's totally fair to be turned off by it, I think -- I'm not knocking you for that at all. If anything, I just want you to realize that I'm not crazy and that there's a lot to latch onto there, if you give it time. But you can't be faulted if you don't fee like it. That's all.

Me: But you also know that I love space in songs. Just look at how/why/what I love about Calla!

Rich: Yeah, totally, where as I'm apathetic about space...sparse shit sometimes really impresses me, but I often find stuff like this really impressive, too, because it's so intricate and off-the-wall. It's a matter of preference, really.

Fucking claustrophobe.

Me: I mean I can like stuff that's just walls. Like Squarepusher. But what I dislike about, say, nu-metal, is the lack of space. Ya gotta let the song breathe, dig?

Rich: Yeah, and there's a lot of Squarepusher stuff that you could say that about, I think...but certainly not Go Plastic. I don't mind if a song only breathes in shallow gasps, but whatever.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 16 June 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

µ-ziq opressive?
never thought of him that way.
better than awk - easily, but my ears find the spice girls better than andrew wk. and i think the spice girls are shit. but that's another argument altogether.

i rather like mr. paradinas' music, much more so than mr. james' music.

uziq is generally horrible but goodbye goodbye is one of the most beautiful rnb beats ive ever head

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i much prefer the later "frothy and pointless" u-ziq to the "madcap cartoon stockhausen dnb" of the early stuff

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i find 'Bilious Paths' more accessible than recent Autechre, Aphex and Squarepusher it seems. and you need 'Johnny Maastricht' in your life big time.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

µ-ziq seems to be the only one of the IDM dudes not totally in love with his equipment -> his tracks still have emotion instead of vague abstractism and endless knob-twiddlin'.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"the fear" is one of the best pieces of music i've heard this year (i only bought royal astronomy recently, y'know?) i'm less fond of his drum'n'bass-y stuff, so from what i've heard, this new one would not be as much to my liking. it's on my maybe list.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about Royal Astronomy was that melodically it was a very good album indeed but marred by overuse of that godawful MIDI string noise. Real strings or proper bleeps please, don't try and compromise.

I'm with Trife on Goodbye Goodbye though... absolutely lush.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

just download 'johnny maastricht' and feel the '93 rudebw0y darkcore pressure you fuXors!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"goodbye goodbye" is great, but not quite as lush as the fear. how great can a song be? it sounds like it could have been a hit, too.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing about Royal Astronomy was that melodically it was a very good album indeed, taken further towards genius by overuse of that godawful MIDI string noise (and timps played too high up). Real strings would've been a compromise.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked the couple of tracks where the strings were combined with something altogether different (the one with hip hop beats was great). But the tracks with mere strings were kinda boring, and they gave the album sort of a schizophrenic feel. If you wanna do string music, why not go all the way? I think Mr. Paradinas should create yet another alias for his classical cravings, and leave them out of his µ-ziq albums.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Shove the poor bastard into easy to understand categories, why don't ya?

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, wouldn't it be nice to have a record like "The Kronos Quartet Plays the Music of Mike Paradinas"? I'd buy it, anyway.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Tomita's The Planets springs to mind.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

here, are the strings on royal astronomy not by the icelandic string quartet or something?
i didn't think they were midi at all
