They opened with Nervous breakdown (Morris on vocals) and the rest of the show was just a lot of fun. They played tv party, jealous again, revenge, six pack, wasted again, rise above, thirsty and miserable, gimme gimme gimme, and more.

there's another version of Black Flag just called Flag w/ Keith Morris, Chuck Dukowski, Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton from the Descendents etc. competing versions of the same band are never not funny (as noted above) but I would actually go and see the Morris etc one
― Crack On, Have A Booze (with Manda Rin) (DJ Mencap), Friday, 25 January 2013 11:28 (thirteen years ago)
I think there's definitely an argument that says if it's not Chuck then it's not Black Flag.
― Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Friday, 25 January 2013 11:34 (thirteen years ago)
Would agree with that argument (though I have time for Flag's post-My War LPs). Ron's a sweetheart, and the show he played for his 50th, with Ginn appearing for the encore, looked like lots of fun. But the 2003 "reunion" was so so so so very bad. Wonder if Ginn's going to use a tape recording of himself playing bass again this time.

Black Flag put up a new song for download, and if that wasn’t an odd enough sentence on its own, they also offered some fighting words for Flag. They posted “***note: not to be confused with the ‘fake’ Flag band currently covering the songs of BLACK FLAG in an embarrassingly weak “mailing it in” fashion*** We urge you to check out the real BLACK FLAG when they hit your area.”
― curmudgeon, Friday, 3 May 2013 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

― Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 06:34 (six years ago)
I don't think Mike Vallely is short. Google says he's 5' 10".
More importantly, googling that led me to his skate videos, which are just as great as I remember.
― JRN, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 06:49 (six years ago)
It was probably a perspective issue with the stage, which wasn't raised much. From where i was standing, Ginn didn't look tall but I remembered he's like 6'5 or something. So Vallely obv would have looked much shorter in comparison despite not being Danzig-sized.
So I'll strike my fake news height comments, but vocals are definitely not his thing. He wasn't unusually bad, but it sounded like karaoke. Everybody could play their instruments but it felt so perfunctory.
The songs that worked best were post-My War tunes

FLAG is actually pretty damn good, aged and cobbled together as it is. Saw em last year and had a lot of fun. Descendent’s guitarist totally nails the classic Ginn guitar sound, gnarly ass solos and all.I’ve heard nothing but sad things about the “Black Flag” incarnation.
― circa1916, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:16 (six years ago)
that's the other thing, Keith talked to the crowd. there was no communication with the crowd last night. not once.
the guitar also was very clean sounding. if the guitar was dialed down a smidge more, I'd have been at a Minutemen show. which is great, if they're The Minutemen playing Minutemen songs, not so much when you're a noisy-meedly-weedly punk band
― Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:17 (six years ago)
but the thing that made me leave was the constant stream of assholes who kept rudely shoving (or trying to shove) by me to get to the front, until I spread my shoulders and cut off all entry points behind me. how the hell can you watch a show when you're constantly having your space invaded? only to come back minutes later so you have to do the whole charade again.
that's more a discussion for the show etiquette thread though.
― Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:19 (six years ago)
Also, in regards to the ‘peace, man’ post, Fish Head Cantina is about as lame and shitty as you would expect it to be. The fact that the Ginn & Crew version were playing there told me enough about what to expect.
― circa1916, Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:29 (six years ago)
lol. I liked the place last night, but it's a place you go to have good beer with friends near the beach. it's horrible for a concert.
the place they're playing this weekend? a local Cafe/restaurant that has poker games and is equally awkward. these are teh places they're playing.
Flag, on the other hand, played the State Theater in St Pete and the shit sold out or damn close.
― Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 22 January 2020 23:39 (six years ago)
Shouldn't BLACK FLAG be able to play like real clubs? I feel like they should have two modern hardcore bands opening for them and selling out legit theaters.
― Corduroy Stridulations (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 23 January 2020 02:18 (six years ago)
You would think. It might also be intentional on Ginn's part. They just got announced as playing this big festival here in Sept that fuckin Judas Priest is playing at so clearly the ability is there.
But on the other hand, sales are so shit to Saturday's show, the owner of the venue walked into one of my best friends' cat cafes and just gave him two tickets (which are going for $35 even though it's literally at a restaurant).
― Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 January 2020 02:27 (six years ago)
My friend has zero interest in punk rock or Black Flag either

― Rhoda from Steubenville (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 January 2020 02:52 (six years ago)

― circa1916, Thursday, 23 January 2020 03:15 (six years ago)
yeah "Gimme Gimme Gimme" was loud and raucous at Flag.
yesterday it was 30% slower than usual and it sounded like four people dicking around on it at a Sam Ash.
I also left because I refused to hear them mangle "Rise Above" or "Damaged I". they were just getting to "Six Pack" when I was leaving and someone screamed 'THIS IS THE SHIT THAT STARTED IT ALL' but he was in the bar and you can barely hear or see the show from there so...i had no idea why he was excited.
i might have left earlier if it wasn't 30 degrees outside. us Floridians cannot handle cold.

they've got a long way to go and a short time to get there

Pretty crazy that they're doing three dates in Montana. The closest one (Butte) is 3 1/2 hours drive each way from me, if I was even interested, which I'm not.

xp god that’s a lot of driving

I'm not interested in seeing them even though they're coming to my town, but I respect the ambition of that tour schedule. Just squeezing every possible penny out. Seems like a lot for a 72-year-old, but maybe this is Ginn's retirement fund.

it's not even so much the distances but the fact that they're constantly backtracking
don't care about the band but i am frustrated for them
― mookieproof, Thursday, 16 July 2026 02:25 (one week ago)
Ginn is sticking with the new bandmates he hired I think last year including 20-something female vocalist Max Zanelly

Interesting that there's no NYC, Chicago, or DC shows (there is a more remote MD one). Plus they have a day off in between Philly and Richmond, Va that are 4 hours apart; but no day off between Hagerstown, MD and Athens, GA that is at least a 9 hour drive (says google)

that circuitous 5-day leg (464 miles) is only slightly longer than LA-SF (430 miles) which is a routine 1-day tour leg so I would counter: no, that's not bad at all. typical east coast softness.

A lot of those venues are like 250-cap dive rooms so i wonder if it even really adds up to "retirement fund" money. (Unless Greg is just paying the band like $75/gig & keeping the rest, which is not unlikely.)
I've never had an emotional investment in them as a band but watched most of a recent set on youtube and man was it weak & bad. i would be annoyed paying $5 to see them at my local bar, nevermind $45
