I'm going to see the Fall this Friday...

I've never seen them, and I'm psyched. I haven't heard anything past "Extricate," though... I'm not expecting to hear any of my faves. I'm ready to be belatedly seduced into the Fall '90s-'00!

Neither have I. And I haven't heard anything past Extricate other than a single off of one of a later album released on Matador. I am still jealous, though. ;)

I saw them when Middle Class Revolt came out - I didn't know much of what they played, but the show was great. I'm going to see them on 7/1

Yeah, I'm just hoping for a good show. Though I also realize it'd be a bit silly to go with any expectations of Mark E. being really "on" or whatever. Especially at the ungodly hour of 6:30 in the evening. (I think the club needs them off the stage for their big Friday night electroclash party afterward.)

I'll go see them when they come to Austin next month. Saw them lots in London back in the early 90s, and they usually rocked. But of course back then The Fall was more than just MES. I don't like any of the records from the last decade, Code Selfish was the last one I liked. The stuff I've heard from the last few albums has been mostly shit, though I'd like to hear the spoken word lps.

Would like to see them later this week if I can but I don't think it'll fly. Ah well.

seeing 'em on saturday in SF, really never expected to see them as many times as I have; we caught them in London in 2000 and then I thought, "well, I'll never see them again because they'll never come to the US," and then they came last year, and now here they are again. Amazing! The London show was better than the last SF show though.

(Guys, never has a joke so music geeky been set up for you... I'm guessing in three posts.... )

Well the San Francisco show last night was fantastic, much exceeded my expectations. Smith in good mood and much more into performing, seemingly sober, intelligable lyrics, pulled ou Damo Suzuki and Big New Prinz as well as Mr. Pharmacist; new songs were excellent, he only disappeared off stage once and came right back out. New keyboardist Elenor Palou, apparently also his wife, played seemingly all of one note the entire night and basically stood stock still staring forward looking pretty and at the end of the set smoked a cigarette. Ben, the guitarist for the past few years, really seeming like a real member of the band by now.

I was hoping they'd have copies of the new album but no luck.

they've been AWESOME every time I've seen them.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 22 June 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

same, but i only saw em 2x. in 1983. i probably wouldn't go see em now, but y'know, probably wouldn't go & see anyone now.

The L.A. show was really good, as well. I liked the band a lot - they were so tight. They rocked! Yeah, Big New Prinz and Mr. Pharmacist were the only "classics" (though I recognized "F'oldin Money," too).

seemingly sober, intelligable lyrics

Ha, I couldn't understand a word he said (except for, between songs, in response to shouted requests - a growl of "No chance").

Did the SF set (encore) end with that vaguely Rage Against the Machine-ish heavy song, with each musician leaving the stage one by one at the end, leaving only the guitarist playing the riff over and over, 'til he bowed out with a friendly wave of the beer bottle? It was all very fun. I'd like to see a setlist to know what they played, and what albums the songs were from.

so i just saw the fall

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 22 June 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah they finished with the same song, which was Dr Buck's Letter but completely different than how it sounded on the Unutterable.

Here are some pictures someone took at the SD gig, including classics of the new Mrs. Smith smoking

I saw the Fall at the Knitting Factory when they toured for their last album - they were good, it was mostly cool for me to just witness Mark E Smith. The musicians he was playing with weren't all that great, it was kind of a simple loud guitar/bass/drums arrangement. They mostly played songs from the Missing Winner record, along with "Mr. Pharmacist," a rearranged "Cyber-Insekt," "F'olding Money," and a kick-ass version of "I Am Damo Suzuki" at the end.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 23 June 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw them at Reading Festival in 199(9? just before The Marshall Suite came out IIRC) at which point I don't think I'd seen them for about 15 years or bought a "new" album of theirs since TNSG / 458489 A-Sides; and they were absolutely bloody excellent - completely rekindled my interest in them.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 23 June 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen them 5 times - the quality has widely varied. What i want to know is when they're coming back to Edinburgh - it's been nearly 2 years since the last gig.
