In case anyone's interested. Both of them.

Taylor Parkes (Taylor Parkes), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Bang still going to keep going, Taylor?

Cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

'Both' means the Gloom brothers, right?

Who is Crispin Parry, described in Monday's media guardian as "...founding editor of music magazine bang..."???

mei (mei), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Gloomy day for The Gloom Brothers !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Doom-e will be excited !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloody Hell. Details, Taylor, details.

Crispin Parry is apparently one of the Gloom Brothers - he used to run a very good but barely-publicised music-in-a-tangential-fashion mag called Circuit. I used to talk to him on the phone a lot in my days as a really really bad press officer, always seemed like a nice fella with a genuine love of his chosen subject matter.

Still, if others beg to differ.

Anyway. Taylor. Details!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

that's odd, i was just discussing bang on the telephone with alan mcgee...

doom-e, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(Thanks Charlie, guess Crispin's just left with his job as part of the Polyphonic Spree choir now.)

mei (mei), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, details! I want to hear more about this - whose gonna replace them? Will the mag still run? Taylor?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I know! Bahahaah!

doom-e, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

doom-e you can't do that! spill!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

We demand jibber-jabber.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, come on... i actually think it would be funny if it folded!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

sworn to secrecy - i'm a minx! sorry. no jibber jabber until i get the green light!

doom-e, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

and why were they sacked?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

have you ever read bang, dave?

doom-e, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

haha!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oh get out of town - course i have but plenty of mags are shit - i just want OFFICIAL reasons ;-)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't help with any of that detail, I'm afraid. I only know that they've got the boot. I'm as curious as anyone as to why, although it probably wasn't for any of the right reasons.

As far as I know, they're keeping the magazine going, but God only knows who'll be writing for it, or what it'll be like.

Taylor Parkes (Taylor Parkes), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a shame on one level - Dan Ford was very cute. As I found out yesterday as I was on the telephone to God. (She agreed with me.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there any precedent here? I can't think of any occasion when a music magazine's Editor has got the elbow without walking first.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not that rare...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i think anybody knows when they are going to get sacked - except crazed egomaniacs.

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever met an editor that wasn't a crazed egomaniac by definition?

kate (kate), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"i think anybody knows when they are going to get sacked - except crazed egomaniacs."

The accounts department usually know all about things like that well before happen - but then of course, no-one ever bothers to talk to the accounts department.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

And they managed, what, 3 issues? I think it shows a lack of foresight on behalf of the publishers to hire someone to do a job who is so obviously bad at it that they only last three issues.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I always talk to the accounts department - they always have the hottest gossip! i didnt take one job cause they told me that the entire floor was going to be sacked and it was going to be a waste of my time!

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

? I think it shows a lack of foresight on behalf of the publishers to hire someone to do a job who is so obviously bad at it

you say this like it's some kind of "shockah!", nick...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what i was thinking, dave!!!

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

if publishers weren't shortsighted then i'd be editing that observer music monthly bitch, doing it well and employing good writers on good pay! grrrrrr!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:30 (twenty-two years ago)

this is the velocity age tho, "farsighted" = "delusional"

dave q, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i like to think that my above statement at least passes the crazed egomaniac test...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, yeah. That wasn't my most profound insight evah.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the crap excuse for being a failure: 'no one understands me' - THAT IS BECAUSE YOU AIN'T DOING THE PUBLIC ANY GOOD...

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

EVERYBODY understands me, deep down, but they just don't want to admit it yet for some reason. Am I still an egomaniac?

dave q, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

no, that is just biding your time!

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

who's saying no one understands them? the only person who doesn't understand me is my wife...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yer lucky my girl understands me too well!

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not actually married but it was a cheap gag there for the taking... i've gone for a few editorships in the past and have laid my cards on the table every time - i think being understood is overrated in this instance! next time i'm gonna lie: tell them i'll bring "attitude, energy and lots of buzzwords to the publication" then publish 5,000-word pieces by penman, reynolds, phil sherburne and lots of us here!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you ever met an editor that wasn't a crazed egomaniac by definition?

*clears throat*

actually, the Kerrang! lot and the mojo kids are refreshingly free of egomania, etcetera... and Careless Talk too, rilly...

stevie (stevie), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

then publish 5,000-word pieces by penman, reynolds, phil sherburne and lots of us here!

oh no OH NO OH GOD NO ...

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

what are you scared of?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and Careless Talk too, rilly...

BWAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAAAAAHHHHH!!!

Thanks, Stevie, that's the best laugh I've had in a long, long time.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i would give geir a column too

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i would send armies out to destroy ilx

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I would send out armies to turn the whole world into ILX.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i would create a dynasty of warring kates and geirs.

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never warred with Geir in my life.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

not yet! ultimately you will come together and overthrow me and my evil magazine empire and publish 50,000 word treatises on Girls Aloud.

doom-e, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate Girls Aloud. Too rhtymic!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oui.

RUMOURS ABOUT BANG FUTURE
Much rumours circulating this morning about the future of Future Publishing's much heralded (and critically acclaimed) new music mag Bang following the departure of editors the Gloom brothers – Crispin Parry and Danny Ford. The official line is that the pair were hired as launch editors and were always scheduled to leave once the title was up and running. However with the departure of a number of other editorial staff some are questioning if things are going as smoothly for the new title as the publisher suggests. Former Kerrang man Dan Silver will take over as editor.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 30 June 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

what the hell - this is causing a big flurry today for me and it's part of the thread....pr's are writing in thinking this article got the bang editors sacked! i don't think so!

stirmonster, Monday, 30 June 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

wha? Muzik goes too? Oh, the humanity...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 30 June 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Now all they need do is hire the Pitchfork crowd to edit Bang! and the ILM posse will luxuriate in joy.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
oh dear, i have just seen the new look Bang on sale

it's Q magazine mark 2

Eminem, Foo Fighters and truckload of over familiar NME/ Q type of bands.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

They blew their chance to capture the darkwave market AGAIN!

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pissed at Bang. I took a copy off a rack and saw this in the far left hand bottom corner of the cover:
Disc not available outside UK.

DAMN YOU, DAMN YOU TO HELL!

Hey, at least there's X-Ray magazine though, huh? Right guys? Right?

(Or perhaps you could read Trash, which should come with a free sticker saying "I am a complete fuckwit" for its readers to wear)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

tim, i hope you were joking because that made me laugh out-loud. cds coming soon. been extraordinarily busy with slaughter joe liner notes and book proposals and live reviews and short stories. plan to go to the post office for en masse mailing this saturday.

cheers,

doom-e, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

x-ray is the best magazine in the history of the world - ever...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

apart from the fucking abysmal writing and the fact that it's part-owned by a radio station (conflict of interest? of course not). what i mean is that it fits easily into a handbag, so it must be good...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

conflict of interest? of course not

Dave, yr sarcasm is noted, but a little misplaced, surely? It's a music magazine full of writing about some new and some old music, part-financed by a radio station which plays some new and some old music. Some of the bands covered in X-Ray are featured on Xfm, but not all. And vice versa. Vested interest or no, surely there's no actual "conflict" per se, since they're both racing for the same prize ie. that *elusive* 18-25 web-designing/student market...

I quite like X-Ray - it's improving with every issue. Bang I've still not read. Meh.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's wrong - you won't see them giving much props to other broadcasters etc... it limits coverage... and the magazine has chris blue, neil davenport and toby manning writing for it, i think, and is thus utterly irredeemable

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

X-Ray is passable. Almost as good as Pulse was. Well, these are lean times OK!!!?

dave q, Thursday, 31 July 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely mags and radio stations should be on the same side, promoting good music. If the mag was ownedd by a record company it'd be a bit different.

mei (mei), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

why?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes but this is Capital XFM we're talking about.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 31 July 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
Bang was apparently closed today after ten issues.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

No big shock, last few issues i saw on the shelves had become carbon copy/ sub Q magazine

Bang failed to offer anything different !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Free Taylor Parkes!

Enrique 3000 (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Details now please? Anyone?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a clear lesson to be learnt for all new music magazines: offer something different to NME & Q - if you play the conformist game - you will sink.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Exactly. How is X-Ray doing, anyone know? On that basis I can't believe it can have much of a future.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

There were apparently some scary boardroom conversations being had about X-Ray last week - it was going to close after Xfm decided they no longer wanted to finance and endorse it. X-Ray's publisher, Swinstead (who also do Jockey Slut and Sleaze Nation), stepped in, found a financial backer and told Xfm they'd be fine without them, at which point Xfm - presumably aghast that they'd somewhat misjudged the value and potential of the mag - did a speedy u-turn and decided not to pull out after all. This hopefully puts X-Ray in a strong position to wrestle more editorial control from the hands of Xfm's bean-counters and constrictive marketing types.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I am put off X-Ray, mostly because of the XFM backing to be honest. May as well have Radio 1 magazine written by Westwood and that Zany Aussie twat.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

a magazine written by westwood would be amazing!

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ha ha.

i knew that magazine was doom-ed.

cool kid of death, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Bang is the suckiest magazine ever.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

To be the actual suckiest, you'd have to have that guy writing for it.

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

X-Ray is working because it models itself on GLAMOUR THE MAGAZINE YOU CAN FIT INSIDE YORE HANDBAG! It's so simple! SO SIMPLE!!

I mean, DO YOU SEE??

http://www.atommickbrane.com/bubbles/sosimple.gif

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It is also rubbish.

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

People have tried, bless them, but all have failed. Everett True's Careless Talk Costs Lives was a good idea in principle, but in actuality it was too indie for most sane, sexually active people, and seemed to be written by a bunch of sarcastic, stupid, and occasionally illiterate students. It is also almost impossible to buy, and thus useless.

But who should you bless with your love, your bile, and your genius? NME? Look at the thing - a monument to gross stupidity, bandwagon jumping, toadying, and ignorance. Did you know record labels pay those foolish swine for front covers? Are you aware of their crazy and sickening "pyramid structure", which is how they decide what to feature? Do you really believe that 'This Is It' and 'Highly evolved' are the best debut albums of the last decade? And do you think they do?

Whats NME's 'Pyramid structure'?

zippy, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Whats NME's 'Pyramid structure'?

I am guessing it something pre-determined every 3/6/12? months - whereby a select few bands are decided are NME housebands, then working down the pyramid, in tiers: grouping bands in clusters of perceived NME nowness. The Top of the Pyramid maximum coverage, the base of the Pyramid some coverage [e.g newer bands just starting out that the NME tip].

This would account for Strokes and White Stripes being top pyramid and therefore featured heavily throughout the year.

NME = rubbish rock mag for teenagers.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you think NME accepts money from major labels for front covers/glowing press? Theres hardly any actual criticism in the mag these days. Anyone else have a problem actually finding the album reviews in NME recently?

Zippy, Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a problem with the NME Big Book. My god, that thing was worse than an actual issue of the NME. First rule of life kids: don't assume anyone else shares your sense of humour.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Whats NME's 'Pyramid structure'?

In addition to Martian's (probably accurate) description above as to *which* bands are covered, I'm fairly sure there's also a heirarchy when it comes to *how* bands are covered - by which I mean, you'll seldom see a band appearing on a full-page spread if they haven't already had a half-page piece in the past; and the days of putting their full weight behind a band *just* because everyone in the office likes them, are long gone.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 10 December 2003 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)
