Bought this unlistened. I only had Simple Pleasures before, which I really like. This doesn't sound anything like that though. It started off very nice though. The first song is beautiful. I'm not so sure about the rest. Maybe it will take awhile to enjoy it but I'm pretty dissapointed so far.

there is only one tindersticks album and that is the first one.

I don't think tindersticks are capable of making a bad album, just possibly a boring one. Haven't heard the new one but the last one was gorgeous. Simple Pleasures is the one I listen to the least so if the new one doesn't sound like that, that bodes well for me!

Now if only they'd come back to San Francisco.

To me a boring album is a bad album.
How good can it be if you are bored with it?

There is only one Tindersticks album and that is all of them.

TMFTML

TMFTML (TMFTML), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

bad would be offensively uncharacteristic or off-putting. boring might have been the wrong word, maybe "comparatively dull" but comparative only to their other records. I don't know that I would consider such an album "bad" though.

It's a decent album. Certainly better than the last two, I'd say ("Can Our Love" was terrrrrrible). It sounds like they're heading for a sound similar to their early material (less backup singers crap, less attempts at soul music, more violins, etc.) Stuart Staples (sp?) is singing kinda high on some songs now, which frightened me when I first heard it.

Again, horible vocals.

David Allen, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

simple pleasure was their last great album - can our love was treading water, the new one is better

as soon as you hear the song featuring canadian singer lhasa, you realize that tindersticks is a great band with a terrible singer. all the songs sound the same because of him. if only they would stick doing duets...

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Nooooo, noooo, noooooo! They wouldn't be the same without Stuart Staples. I suppose you either love or hate his voice, but I can't imagine being a Tindersticks fan and not liking it. And I really don't think all the songs sound the same, either, being as objective as I can be. I really hope 'Waiting for the Moon' is as good as it sounded at the Lowry, because I did think 'Don't Even Go There' was a bit disappointing on the whole and not really deserving of the fantastic title.

But anyway, Staples talks the same as he sings, none of this Nick Cave amazing singing voice/ weedy whiney speaking voice shit.

And on another note, the Bang journo who wrote the review of 'Waiting for the Moon' must die. "Perfect music to open a vein to, blah blah" -dickhead.

It's tons better than Can Our Love?, which I could never get into, but not as good as Simple Pleasure, which is my favourite. When you say Stuart Staples is singing kinda high on some of the songs, do you mean the ones that were sung by Dickon?

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Stuart's voice is less irritating on WFTM than the earlier records (pre Simple Pleasures) but I would prefer Dickon to sing more.

After listening to the record a bit more my favorite tracks are the first one, waiting for the moon and my oblivion. I still think Simple Pleasures is quite a bit better as a whole though.

The cover is very nice btw. Beautiful paintings.

the second self-titled one is my favorite. in fact everything after the first two seems a bit weaker. i picked up the new one for $1 but i haven't given it a spin yet - i'm waiting for the right moment.

j fail (cenotaph), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i love the second one, and i love stuart staples' voice, but especially when he combines it with a female vocal, say isabella rosellini or, in this case, lhasa. i think he gives the perfect counterpoint for a lady, in a sinatra/hazelwood way.
i'd rather see him making duets from now on.

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 19 June 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've received this album to review and will yet ponder. Their show in 1997 was marvy fun fab, I have to say -- Ann Magnuson came out for the duet and all.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the first alb is a killer. one of the few twee-ish albums that i don't hate. must get their second someday.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

their first album isn't twee at all!

Okay I got this WFTM and you're right, his voice is high part of the time. Maybe I was ruined by this thread but when I listened to it I was a little underwhelmed. I liked Can Our Love though. This will take another few listenings before it sinks in.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

let's see how long it takes for ned finally listening to it.
i had it for two weeks before i decided to scrap the plastic and actually play it. that must mean something.

joan vich (joan vich), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Only managed to listen to it once, under less than perfect conditions (in the car) but first impressions is that it seems a bit more varied stylistically than their previous albums, with more different influences creeping in here and there. Does anyone else think this or is it just me?

It is harrowing journey to the dark side and beyond beautiful.

really dark stuff eh?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 20 June 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The Tindersticks are coming to the WEST COAST in August.
San Francisco 2 nights and LA 1. The new record is very good! If you are a fan of any of their albums this one will please.

George Jensen, Friday, 20 June 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes I saw the tour dates today, I am so excited! Although this is the day after Bjork and also the day before my best friend moves away, so an exhausting weekend.

Listened to the album last night in the car and it was a much better experience than on headphones at work cranked up to drown out people talking about crap. A beautiful album, actually, really does recall the first two (I know this is the Beggars' marketing line but its true).
