My next purchase but since they exude a very GYBE vibe why do people here rate them (so I presume)?

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 17 June 2003 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never heard them but jeez I gotta say that's a bad name for a band. Not that that might be indicative of anything, but it sure keeps me away.

hstencil, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

A friend of mine worked with the guitar player at a Wherehouse Music joint in Midland, TX. WHEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
He made me a copy of their record. I haven't listened to it yet.

Francis Watlington, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe a little more Mogwai than GYBE...essentially tons of loud/quiet/loud/quiet guitars. I bought their album after being told it would change my life. It didn't. It's okay but don't let your high expectations get the best of you.

Sandy, Tuesday, 17 June 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic.

I just emailed them tonight for an interview. Their site says they're working on a new album now.

You have to like the loud-soft thing. Anything Mogwai does, EITS does better. EITS rage louder and soft sadder. They have better technique and better ideas than Mogwai does.

Shaun (shaun), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I have my doubts (for my own take on things, at least).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I caught the last few songs of theirs when they opened for Swirlies and the Lilys a few weeks ago. If you haven't tired of the soft/tender/loud/explosive thing a la Mogwai, Godspeed, etc., you'll like these guys.

I think the 1997 me would have liked them a lot. That's all I'll say.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite rate them. That was, incidentally, my first EVAH review for Stylus. It must be said that I've not listened to the album in a while though. My mate Rob jizzes upon them with lusty desire.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I also saw them open for the Lilys and Swirlies (perhaps even the same show as db (SF, Bottom of the Hill?)) and felt pretty much the same kind of "eh" ambivalence. I've long since burned out on the whole symphonic post-rock thing, but I guess there are plenty of folks out there who still dig on it.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the CD is nothing compared to the live show. not only are they the loudest band i've seen (their amps go up to 11), but they're totally captivating. they seem like really nice modest guys. the creepy thing is, the album came out september 10, 2001 and the cover has an angel guiding an aeroplane over a battlefield and inside the cover it says "this plane will crash tomorrow." of course, it was all coincidence, but considering the post-apocalyptic mood of the music in general, it's enough to run shivers down one's spine. at least mine, because im a wanker.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Alot of people reported having dreams about the Sept. 11 tragedy before it happened... but that's another messageboard entirely.

What about their live shows- they're really LOUD

Shaun (shaun), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(continued) but are they really GOOD? Some of the stuff seems like it could be difficult to pull off.

Shaun (shaun), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

they pull it all off particularly well, especially for a 4 person band. it's the only time i've ever seen all 4 members of a band play so ferociously but still very focused. they've definitely got their shit together.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Dud. The melodic progressions are just SOOOOO predictable. Big fan among boring indie radio fucks.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

what's an indie radio fuck? do other radio fucks exist, like public radio fucks?

jake b. (cerybut), Thursday, 14 April 2005 03:29 (twenty years ago)

NPR pledge drivers to thread!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 14 April 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

other radio fucks do exist!

jam band radio fuck
backpacker hip hop radio fucks
3 am trance show radio fux

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

would you say that all indie radio fucks are corny indie fux, but not all corny indie fux are indie radio fucks?

jake b. (cerybut), Thursday, 14 April 2005 04:58 (twenty years ago)

Ehhhh.... no. I guess some are ok.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

Classic. Obviously. Morons.

dmun, Thursday, 14 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, some of the climaxes are a tad obvious but heck, they can still hit hard at times. It's some of the quieter fiddly moments that lose me. Quite like the way one of the guitar players always blesses his pick with a kiss just before launching into the loud stuff. Melodramatic, but cute nonetheless. Hmmm, they're okay!

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

I love this band, in large part because of the predictability of movements. They sound like rainy days.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I think The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place is much better than the first album....I hate the "tappity-tappity-tap-tap" drumming on that one...really martial and boring. The guitars on the newer album are really very pretty. I want to see them live post haste.

PB, Thursday, 14 April 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

They were PERFECT for Friday Night Lights; predictable, yet no less powerful for it.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

You are lamers

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Why yes, I am a fan of "La Mer", but that doesn't really have anything to with Explosions in the Sky.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 April 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

they are great like the colour white which yes i know isn't a colour, they are so nothing but something... new Superchunk innit

elwisty (elwisty), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:04 (twenty years ago)

They are good music for fucking, too.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

one of the best live shows i've seen.

i don't listen to the albums that much but if they ever play near me then i am THERE.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

They are a very good band if you are into loud/soft. Intertwining melancholy soft melodies with up to 3 guitars and military-style drumming. The loud is fun too. Incredible live show, I haven't really seen too many bands that put more into their shows. Album doesn't do the live show justice. They have great guitar tone, and I haven't added anything to this thread that wasn't already there.

Yejoon (Yejoon), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

they really need to find a way to recreate the intensity of their live performances on record

perhaps a live record.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

they are not playing any live shows in 2005, except maybe one.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

i really like that their melodies are so predictable. they're a hell of a lot better than their contemporaries.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

I have a couple of video clips of them playing live shows. One is in a record store and they didn't have the room to move like they usually do, but it's still cool. The other is at Crocidile Cafe in Seattle, I believe. It was a good performance as well. Maybe I should YSI these if people are interested.

Yejoon (Yejoon), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

MONO from japan rocks the pants off of EITS.

the leglo (the leglo), Thursday, 14 April 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

They are terrible. If you like them you have no taste. They scored that movie about FOOTBALL that GY!BE refused to.

Just imagine GY!BE4jox. THAT IS EITS.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

question: have ANY of the hataz on this thread seen them live?

As many have said, on record they sound weak -- GYBE lite -- but live, they put on a furious show. They're one of the loudest bands I've ever seen.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

OHNO I HAEV NO TASTE!!!!

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Yejoon (Yejoon), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

They're like the inverse of DMB but still terrible. Their songs build to all too predictable climaxes. Indie kids jerk off to this shit.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Ok, just because I'm a rockist doesn't mean they don't suck. UGH

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

(Ramones : Screeching Weasel) as (GY!BE : EOTS)

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

i'll come out as a hater, and i have seen them live twice. once supporting the first album, and once supporting the new one. i'll admit that they are actually a pretty good band, and better than lots of other bands. however, none of these other bands are in their genre. virtually every song builds up with a pleasant or sinister repeating riff, approaching an amazing climax, but without exception, utterly fails to take it to the next level. so, bands like Mono, Gy!be and even Mogwai all do the style better, by virtue of knowing when to switch things up. note: playing the exact same thing really quiet and then really loud is NOT switching things up.
also, both mono and mogwai were louder each time i've seen them in philly.

the leglo (the leglo), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

For what its worth, I LIKE Screeching Weasel.

Open your eyes; you can fly! (ex machina), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I'll admit they can be formulaic, but so are a lot of pop songs and that hasn't stopped me from liking other music. But to cite them doing a movie soundtrack (i.e. artistic integrity) as a reason for them sucking is more retarded than your screenname, especially considering that it might not have been a comprimise in their artistic integrity.

I say fuck it, sell out because once you're done in the music industry, you'll have nothing to show for it. No 401k, no medical, no dental. Cred don't pay the bills or your kids' tuition.

Yejoon (Yejoon), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Also, judging the quality of music on the loudness of a band seems pretty booty to me. Maybe if you were referring to use of dynamics, but loudness? Gwar was the loudest show I've been to (seen both Mogwai and EITS), and their music sucks. The show was one of the funnest I'd ever been to, though.

Yejoon (Yejoon), Thursday, 14 April 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

haha, i heart EITS but that was just silly, yejoon (the post about tuition)

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

srry, this dizzee damage control thing distracted me and i misread that post. i agree w/you.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

they make a lot of money.

I hope they're good at investing.

Yejoon (Yejoon), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah, my aside about loudness wasn't about the real issue. it's about switching from the marching band rhythm to a heavier sounding pattern to get the real over the top sound. EITS could be 200 db and it would be the same problem...

the leglo (the leglo), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Leglo-

Wasn't really referring to you, but I hear you. Actually my loudness comment went against the argument of those in support of EITS.

Yejoon (Yejoon), Thursday, 14 April 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Gwar was the loudest show I've been to (seen both Mogwai and EITS), and their music sucks.

I saw these guys at Radio City Music Hall last nite. never heard (of) them before, a friend had extra ticket. think it was sold out!

not bad - maybe like a no-vocals Ride w/minimalist pulse influence? their soft/loud/soft dynamic could use more subtlety & VARIATION - kinda samey. and the gtrs never got as HEAVY as I like but it was nice to let the textures wash over me and chill out for an hour and half. girl next to me was into it: fist-pumping, air-drumming, taking 100s of pix.

I wondered what the ILM consensus would be? surprisingly underwhelming. though I would've guessed they weren't JW's cup of bubble tea. not really noize, despite the volume.

Yeah, I agree. My fave track, one of the best explosions tracks full stop. I was initially quite dismissive of the album but it's been getting a lot of play time. Guess I still have some use for "post-rock" after all.
