Which musicans have you avoided listening to because of the hype surrounding it.

Well, I can't say that I've specifically avoided certain music because of the hype surrounding it, but I've listened to _Amnesiac_ much less than I thought I would have, mostly because of RS- type "Radiohead had to kill rock to save themselves" type shit (yaaaawn!). Can't say I got too into Sigur Ros, either, probably for a lot of the same reasons - to use a Raggettism, the Yup Scum adoration factor tainted my experience.

The White Stripes. I've heard some stuff that was good, some that was only ok, but I'm not going to buy the album because of all the f*cking talk about them. I'm not sure if it's the same in the UK, but the hype machine is pretty revved up here over them.

I won't avoid hyped music. I only wait for it come to me used or pirated.

Just because something is being hyped is a stupid reason to not want to hear something. It all depends on what is being said by whom and how much you yourself are a jaded cynic.

JoB: I AM a jaded cynic.

Sean, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

JoB: It's not always cynicism or snobbery. Sometimes it's just a matter of something being so omnipresent -- around you to such an inescapable extent -- that you feel no need to bring it any further into your life. If I hear or hear about a record three or four times a day, I start to feel like I'm spending enough time thinking about it without actively inviting it into my home.

I don't have MTV, or a radio, and I don't watch any music TV programs and avoid most of the music press, and I bought Missy Elliot last week, and people are telling me they were already sick of it months ago, so who's worse off? Sometimes I feel like a hick.

Strokes. First, BJM, then Blisscent and recently Big Takeover all got hit by Strokes virial marketing spam.

Ryan Adams. But, yeah, "avoid" is too strong a word. Let him come to me.

Goldfrapp : Felt Mountain ... I wouldn't say it's exactly over-hyped ... but I copied this a couple of months ago and I thought it was OK, but somehow I never get round to listening to it. Maybe it's because people keep saying how brilliant it is ...

I've felt strangely inclined *not* to buy the new Beta Band album.
