Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi." It never fails to make me smile. After that, probably Bad Brains' "Pay to Cum," which somehow always makes me think of the Banana Spilts. Must be the cowbell.

Weezer -- "Sex Wax America"

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

funnerest

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have a fun time whilst listening to Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head", esp. paired up with the accompanying video.

case closed

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

'Humpty Dance' also has possibly the best bassline in history

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Don Ellis Orchestra - Turkish Bath

catchy, somewhat odd stuff.... you sit there, enjoying it alright, having a good time
Then out of absolutely nowhere, comes this choir of flutes that are one quartertone too high or low, and it sounds absolutely fucking HORRIBLE, yet in the best possible way ever!
It almost always makes me laugh, as I don't listen to it often enough to remember just how frigging jarring the thing is.

Ellis has a four-valve trumpet for more quartertone bunning on that album too, but that's by far the most earkilling section on "Electric bath"

Other than that, lately Maxine Nightingale's "Right back where we started from" (the song that's practically the theme to Slap Stick) has put many a big smile on my face.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Thursday, 19 June 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

YMCA obviously

oops (Oops), Thursday, 19 June 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

In the way of conventional comedy songs, Adam Sandler's
"Piece Of Shit Car" usually has me in hysterics. It probably
works better when if you've owned truly crappy cars, in which
case you know that no amount of obscenity is gratuitous.

Monty Python deserve a mention here. "I Like Chinese,"
especially, usually has me in stitches.

Weird Al is often painfully unfunny, but when he sounds
angry or mean-spirited the results can be hilarious. "I
Remember Larry" and "The Good Old Days" are his two best songs
in this mode.

squirl plise, Thursday, 19 June 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Lee Scratch Perry/ Bullwackie - "Dog Walk Skanking"

(funny - AMG asserts it's "Bog Walk Skanking"!? my copy of Satan's Dub got lost quite long ago, cannot check...)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 19 June 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

arne, Thursday, 19 June 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Bang A Gong by the immortal T-Rex.

(In fact, this song is what made me notice them, in the first place....plus Bolan looked yummy, at the time.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

nichole gets it.

di smith (lucylurex), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

prince -- "bob george" ("i'll slap yo ass into the middle of next week" and "prince, that skinny motherfucker with the high voice?!?")

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 19 June 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Tighten up by Archie Bell and the Drells. The bassline is undeniably and the call outs rule: "Tighten up on those drums. .. "

Yes but Sam you must realize that "Japanese Gentleman! Prease Stand Up!!!" is even better, and that version comes in two parts (I will send you a mix with the YMO version on it one day, whenever I get a new computer)

Millar (Millar), Friday, 20 June 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And it better not turn out to be a Kool & the Gang song...

what, are you immune to the simple joy that is "fresh"? do you hate fun?

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 20 June 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad wins for "Rico Suave" but also "Stand & Deliver", "Mambo #5" and "Rockaway Beach" are honorable mentions.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 June 2003 02:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i have seen the light ... "rico suave" indeed rules!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 20 June 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Dubsky, Friday, 20 June 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Lazy Sunday~Small Faces

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Friday, 20 June 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

En Vogue's "never gonna get it"
Not only do they prepare you for the breakdown by announcing its arrival, BUT IT STILL FLOORS YOU EVERY TIME.
"Love Shack" always gets me moving too

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 20 June 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"How do you do? My name is Sue! Now you gon' DIE!!!"

"A Boy Named Sue," Johnny Cash, written by Shel Silverstein. The actual working definition of fun.

Neudonym, Friday, 20 June 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry fucked that up lyricwise: "My name is Sue / How do you do / Now you gonna die! Yeah!" (all the lyrical pedants in the house say Yeah)

Neudonym, Friday, 20 June 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"Soul Bossanova" by Quincy Jones activates the ants in my pants. It's both irritating and utterly irresistable. And after Austin Powers, I defy anyone to say that shit ain't both fun and funny as hell.

Hunter (Hunter), Friday, 20 June 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

"hobo humpin slobo babe" by whale

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 20 June 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah Blount OTM but most of the songs from We Care will do (except the one where she narrates her own bloody death in a car accident as well as the deaths of all the other victims and the angels call her home, that's not "fun" except maybe to J.G. Ballard)

Neudonym, Friday, 20 June 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, i think that jg ballard inspired at least 2 other legitimately fun songs -- "warm leatherette" and "cars"!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 20 June 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Escape Club, "Wild, Wild West"

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Friday, 20 June 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Escape Club - "Shake for the Sheik"

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 20 June 2003 06:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe"! Holy shit, I forgot that song existed.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually saw those characters live. Opening for Blur of all things.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I wish I had. I looooooved that album.

Sam J. (samjeff), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Lyrically, The Would Be Goods' The Camera Loves Me album takes some beating imo.

Jez (Jez), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
"Soul Pad" by the Coasters.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Though right now "Let a Man Come In and Do the Popcorn (Pts. 1 & 2)" by JB is way up there.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna say the Baby Elephant Walk, by Mancini, just like I did in the 'song to cheer you up' thread. It's great! Do a little dance to it and you'll feel great.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Something by the B-52s, "Rock Lobster" or maybe (my favourite!) "Strobe Light"

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Newcleus' "Jam On It." Circa, what, 1983? Wiki-wiki-wiki! Jam-ja-ja-ja-ja-jam OWN it!

Also, Stiff Little Fingers' "Suspect Device" and "Alternative Ulster" both cause me to punch the air enthusiastically, every time.

And speaking of punk/pop, it would be inexcusable not to mention Blondie's cover of "Hangin' On The Telephone." (Has anyone heard the Nerves' original? Is it as good?)

snazz, Wednesday, 22 September 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit - Gina G.
All Out Of Luck - Selma.
Club "Kung Fu" - Vanilla Ninja.
Wir Geben 'ne Party - Mekado.
Le Papa Pinguoin - Sophie et Magaly.

Y'see, this is why I love Eurovision.

There is no song that has ever made me as happy as 'Wot' by Captain Sensible. If I am despondent and inconsolable, and you want to help, tie me to a chair and play 'Wot' 2 or 3 times. I will recover.

I think I read the title as 'funniest song ever' before I posted that Jake Thackray video? But I think the song is fun as well, so it's OK I suppose.
'Hello Again' by the Cars would be another contender, particularly this bit (copy and pasted from lyricsfreak):

Oh when there's nothin'
Nothin' left to lose
You leave it all
To fade to blue-ue, eah, yeah
[garbled chipmunks]
