i should've known an unpromising premise when I saw it, but the price was right so I took a chance on this thing, which features indie rock bands covering Vietnam-era classic rock. on first listen, nothing's sounding particularly good, and i like several of the bands...a few interesting interpretations, but as we all well know, "interesting" doth not equate "good".

the tracklisting:

01 Q and Not U: Don't Let It Bring You Down [Neil Young]
02 J Robbins: Fear is a Man's Best Friend [John Cale]
03 Enon: White Rabbit [Jefferson Airplane]
04 Atombombpocketknife: Immigrant Song [Led Zeppelin]
05 The Caribbean: They Just Can't Stop, Games People Play [The Spinners]
06 Big Heavy Stuff: Hello It's Me [Todd Rundgren]
07 The Reputation: For What It's Worth [Buffalo Springfield]
08 The Gooses: 1969 [The Stooges]
09 Cable Car Theory: Come Together [The Beatles]
10 Leigh Sabol: Me and Bobby McGee [Janis Joplin]
11 Death Cab for Cutie: Fortunate Song [Creedence Clearwater Revival]
12 Panoply Academy: Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag [Country Joe & The Fish]
13 Doiron Wood Guilt Trip: Little Boxes [Malvina Reynolds]
14 John Guilt: Song for the Asking [Paul Simon]
15 Rouge: Happy Together [The Turtles]
16 Dame Fate: There Is a Mountain [Donovan]
17 Jessica Skolnik: Everybody's Been Burned [David Crosby]
18 Tony Dolvin: Taps [Traditional]
19 Beauty Pill: I Don't Live Today [Jimi Hendrix]
20 Ted Leo: Many Rivers to Cross [Jimmy Cliff]

Weeping Tile already did the ultimate cover of 'Don't Let It Bring You Down', it's true.

of course "Fortunate Son" is misspelled via Pitchfork, but eh, they were the easiest place to cut-and-paste the info from. that one I was curious to hear simply because Death Cab is the most un-Creedence-worthy band ever, but it's the guy from Harvey Danger on vocals, and he does a decent job, despite DC4C's limp backing.

The bookends are great: I think the Q and Not U cover is excellent and really creative, and the Ted Leo version of the Cliff tune is really soulful and pretty... he does well with the reggae things (see also: his cover of ther Mighty Diamonds "I Need a Roof"). It's worth getting for those two songs (and to support the cause -- it's a benefit comp for American veterans of the Vietnam war).

One more question -- I know J. Robbins has a solo track on here, but has anyone who's on here and lives in the D.C. area seen Channels (his new band) yet? I'm curious how they sound.

The next time somebody does a goddamn comp like this one I want them to contact me so the Brazen Hussies can send them their version of Staff Sgt Barry Sadler's "Bambia". "Viet Cong all around, it's looking bad I think, since we can't do our stuff let's have another drink"
