Classic, if not for any other reason than you can get their whole disography on one disc. Classic for guitars that sound like thunder, and songs like stepping stone, in my eyes, cashing in, and guilty of being white.

Jeff, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

dude, i've been in bands whose entire discography could fit on one disc too. i wish i knew earlier that's all it takes.

if i heard minor threat now, i might be able to take them with a grain of salt and appreciate what everyone else seems to see in them. but i was exposed to them (yes, the complete discography) when i was 16. the combination of straight-edge lyrics and militant ("fascist" was what i thought at the time) music did not seem at all like a good thing, especially considering what the actual sXe scene was like and the fawning worship bestowed on mt by half the people i knew at the time. they have therefore earned a place somewhere between pink floyd and pavement on my must-die list. fugazi's good though.

sundar subramanian, Sunday, 29 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

preachy, sloppy, bad cover art. dud.

chaki, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would never listen to them now, and probably dismiss them completely if the discography didn't have at least half my childhood memories associated with it. One of the most classic records, ever, as far as sentimental value for me... and an important release for the genre- but outside the realm of hardcore/punk rock/straightedge, they're not very relevant. "Salad Days" still holds up though, I think.

Bobby D. Gray, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

along with the misfits and bad brains, one of the only early hardcore bands that still sound great to me. black flag too, I guess.

fritz, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

preachy, sloppy, bad cover art. classic.

Miranda, Monday, 30 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic. Involved with a major reshaping of the DC music scene, and gave birth to Dischord and Fugazi, which are both definitely classic. When Ian MacKaye wanted to play DC clubs for underaged kids, he lobbied the government until they changed their 21+ policies for the city. That's classic. The kids gotta hear the music.

Kodanshi, Tuesday, 31 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

classic. not their fault everyone who came after them took to black Xs like skinheads do to swastikas. or that their guitarist went on to a short and horrid career in a glam rock band.

your null fame, Wednesday, 1 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
These guys are classic. I still love them, and I hadnt listened to them in 10 years. When I was a rebelious teenager I couldnt get enough of them, and they are blasting on my 12" subs right now. What about 7 seconds?

Nate Digs, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 02:05 (twenty-three years ago)

The classic-est.

OCP (OCP), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Way classic.

Made punk rock heavy and, along with Black Flag, birthed hardcore. And golly damn their songs are catchy--it's not just some dumb attack. And as far as lyrics written by teenagers go, theirs were and are quite good, whether you agree with their politics or not.

Ian Johnson, Tuesday, 15 October 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Made punk rock heavy and, along with Black Flag, birthed hardcore.

Classic. But for the aforementioned reasons, still deserving of instant death.

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 05:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolute classic for "Minor Threat," and "In My Eyes," and for being so much better than the bands that followed them.

k-classic

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Thursday, 14 August 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Would be classic for going out with "Salad Days" alone. But even the lesser stuff is mostly very very good within its genre--"Seeing Red," anyone?

Douglas (Douglas), Thursday, 14 August 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in NYC OTM. Minor Threat changed my life. Thank you Ian Mackaye!

cybele (cybele), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

CLASSIC! It's frustrating how little hardcore there is that matches them, like there's Bad Brains, Black Flag and I dunno that's about it so far, isn't it?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it's all kind of redundant after that, isn't it? i mean, even black flag had to go more "metal" after the first couple 7"s. maybe you can only push fast&loud so hard before you have to swerve sideways.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

or alternatively get more melodic

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

cf. husker du

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

they managed to stay pretty crunchy a lot of the time tho'

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 August 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose it was a great sound and 'necessary' at the time but the prob with the hardocre approach is that it never quite comes together on record. The music is a live form, which is why I like it but the records get boring. I sold my copy of ''salad says''.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 August 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I still own a minor threat t-shirt. Classic.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio, have you ever heard Bad Brains' ROIR record? It's fanfuckingtastic. I only ask as I can see yr point, mostly, only the very best bands managed to rock hardcore on record, and they're the paltry few I mentioned as far as I know

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

andrew- my above post was referring to minor threat and husker du. actually I'll buy some bad brains soon as i haven't heard that.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"The only good teens are ones that are idle" - Grateful Dead

dave q, Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm no fan of Husker Du's hardcore stuff, except maybe at the point where it crosses w/their basic 60s leanings on "Everything Falls Apart"... Julio I reallyrecommend the yellow selftitled ROIR record WAY above anything else they ever did, it's got most everything you'd want by them as in famous tracks etc and rocks like anything.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

So I should hear the Teen Idles record?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I'll buy it and report back andrew. cheers.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 August 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. I may actually prefer them to Fugazi, and def. in the lyric department.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 14 August 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

a minor threat song ("it follows") came up on my itunes, and after the song ended, some guy outside on the street was whistling it. that was kinda weird.

dell, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:07 (seventeen years ago)

i'm so confused

PappaWheelie V, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

haha

dell, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:13 (seventeen years ago)

Classic. I was just listening to Complete Discography, in fact, and was struck at what kind of precocious self-confidence and self-awareness it took to write those songs.

I tried listening to 7Seconds not too long ago. They haven't aged well at all - too simplistic and smarmy by far. You can hear what they were trying to do and how they didn't succeed at all.

mike a, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:30 (seventeen years ago)

I bought Complete Discography about 1997 or so, and fuck, I could barely make it through the first ten minutes. It just annoyed me and gave me a headache. Hardcore = not for me.

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:32 (seventeen years ago)

mike, agreed, i loved 7 Seconds in h.s., but they did not age so well. minor threat, otoh, are in the same class as bad brains, i'm thinking. just the righteous fury of their sheer musical attack is unimpeachable

dell, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 01:40 (seventeen years ago)

classic. righteous youthful fury exemplified.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 02:24 (seventeen years ago)

like, the beginning of "filler", before the vocals even come in, still staggers me to this day

dell, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 02:31 (seventeen years ago)

You know, I still haven't given the Bad Brains a fair shake. I suspect I'd like Rock For Light and the ROIR cassette - I've only heard a few songs from each. I couldn't get behind the post-I Against I material, and that was my entry point.

mike a, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

that's definitely not the place to start, lol.

the roir cassete/self-titled is the best, imo.

latebloomer, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

I just need to add that this band is ultra-double-plus classic. "Seeing Red" is always the secret weapon track that I rep for, as per Douglas upthread.

sleeve, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

latebloomer otm, mike

the consensus is that bad brains were pretty much the premiere hc band from the era, and i don't think that's a mistaken conclusion to draw.

immerse yrself properly in the roir/rock for light period, and report back!

dell, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 04:30 (seventeen years ago)

I tried listening to 7Seconds not too long ago. They haven't aged well at all - too simplistic and smarmy by far. You can hear what they were trying to do and how they didn't succeed at all.

I think 'The Crew' has a lot of good songs on it but I wouldn't blame someone for not being able to get past their whole stance

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 09:15 (seventeen years ago)

Complete Discography is classic from start to finish. The first hardcore band I ever got into. The soapboxing never strikes me as smug as I feel it should; I think to myself, "Y'know, this isn't really all that smug", and then I can't help but think I must be wrong. Instead I come away thinking it's kinda charming in a toothy-grinned OH IAN sorta way. (There was a period before I rediscovered them, though!)
Though not at all sXe, the songs actually remain totally invigorating for me somehow. Delivery and riffage.

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 11:13 (seventeen years ago)

Haha, agree w the first (though not the second, obv ;-)

RabiesAngentleman, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 12:05 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, have heard people say that MT are sloppy or a racket or whatever before (normally seems to be people who've been curious about them cos they're like the hardcore big dogs) and always think, well if you think that's sloppy you should hear the other early Dischord bands - among most of those MT were the *musicians*

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

DJ Mencap - Void were great, but some of the drumming(RIP drummer boy) was about as in time as my wanking, which starts off pretty regular and then can go all over the place depending on filth factor gear of brain, energy, (potential) interruptions and so on.

I still love most of that stuff and am in a minor threat with you over 7 seconds cos The Crew was one of the first US Hardcore records I bought - I was just too young to be right there - and in the wrong country. I thought 'Trust' @young Til I die' and Here's Your Warning cut it. I even liked some of their 'u2 on 'Roids' stuff - most self righteous punkkers puked all over it. Saw them about 4 years ago and they were back to Hardcore. Good stuff

SORRY Minor Threat though - Big Fucking Classic.

They could play too. Like Bad Brains .

Jeff Nelson's drumming should have been fast as opposed to second second's (and other HC bands of the day) drumming which would have been OK at half the speed because that's all the guitars were doing. Listen , Im not a drummer as you can tell - so sorry stix but , you know what I mean?

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

Minor Threat = luv

oh i'm sorry, you must have this backwards.

x-post Ha! No, $3.50 not included sadly.

ENBB, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

This will probably sound like heresy to many, but my problem with Fugazi was always Guy's cloying whine. Who needs another vocalist when you have Ian in the ranks?

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 03:07 (seventeen years ago)

HERESY

sleeve, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

two bands missing from this thread in terms of stand-out hardcore:

siege and negative approach.

cb, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 09:38 (seventeen years ago)

"but my problem with Fugazi was always Guy's cloying whine. Who needs another vocalist when you have Ian in the ranks?"

this is how i feel. i can't even listen to fugazi cuzza that guy. and ian is one of my favorite singers on earth. if fugazi had been just him on vocals i would own everything they made. the song "waiting room" is about all i can handle.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

i really like guy on "glue man." but he's basically being underground perry farrell on that or something.

Savannah Smiles, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 10:12 (seventeen years ago)

Huh, always really liked Guy's singin... (Might now show in my previous post but I actually quite like Fugazi.) Still can't get my finger on what seems slightly off with this band. Maybe it's the missing naive youthful enthusiasm I love in MT, maybe it's the splintered cohesion from dividing up the singing...I just don't know. They write great songs and play their instruments quite well, but so do Minor Threat, in very different ways...oh I'll just shut up because I'm clearly not resolving anything here...

I knew a guy who had that goddamn black sheep tattooed on him. Good guy but I really loathed that tattoo.

RabiesAngentleman, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

fugazi and minor threat are such different bands from each other. it doesn't seem fair to compare them at all.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 15:38 (seventeen years ago)

It's all on 1 CD! You can't go wrong! :)

Is there much difference other than volume between the new remaster of Complete Discography and the older issue (which I have)? The old CD is very quiet, but I just turn up the volume on my stereo, problem solved!

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 9 July 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure how I'd feel about them right now--they meant something to me 35 years ago, but I did some rationalizing with their lyrics that may or may not have been warranted, I honestly don't know--but I like this photo.

Impressive (but not surprising) that they (and Fugazi) have resisted what are surely the armored cars full of cash offered by festivals.

The Poppy Bush AutoZone (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 18 November 2018 15:25 (seven years ago)

Wonderful photos. Minor Threat was my gateway into punk in general and hardcore punk in particular, and for me they're still the epitome of the latter. Part of what appealed to me was how everyday they seemed. Those fortunate enough to see The Ramones in the early days will talk about how part of their appeal was that they looked like they just strolled in off the street and onto the CBGB stage, but to me as a kid years later, they were cartoon characters, or rock gods, or both. Same for the Pistols, Clash, etc. But Minor Threat at least in photos came across like the kids I knew...except these kids defined a sound and created a (dubious) lifestyle movement.

Anyway, 12XU is still my go-to for a hardcore pick-me-up, but these days I'm more likely to turn to "Cashing In" when I want a Minor Threat fix. I slot it alongside the DK's "Pull My Strings", "I Dig Rock 'n' Roll Music" and the Diamonds' "Little Darlin'" on my imaginary playlist of genre takedowns where the supposed disdain for said genre expressed in the lyrics is smothered by the evident joy of the performance. I mean, the song rocks.
