what was the last song you heard on radio for first time that totally floated your boat?

uninterestingly mine was Beyonce...by chance heard in a Spar shop while i was buying breakfast, this was about a month or so ago.

but unless i'd tuned to Radio 1 for some reason (not very likely) i would not have heard this song until someone started enthusing about it on this board, or i'd heard it together with the video on TV.

radio used to be a bigger factor in giving me that first taste of a great new song but i can't remember the last time it happened before that. i know if i spent more time listening to the RIGHT radio stations (whether online, digital, analogue or what) i would get this experience more but as it stands i do not.

how is radio working for you these days in introducing you to new music that gets you excited?

No it's not happened to me for ages. It's better at getting me into songs I didn't like first listen.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't actually remember the last time that I actually listened to the radio.

I mean, listened to radio for actual programming, rather than Joe's insistence on radio static while we sleep.

I associate listening to the radio with riding in cars, and I just don't do that when not on tour.

I really miss College Radio from the states. I know it's probably been taken over by Clear Channel, just not the same, etc. etc. but I really miss it. I suppose the closest thing that we have over here is Resonance FM but I have such trouble working net radio cause I'm a technoidiot sometimes.

So I guess radio doesn't work at all, to answer your question.

kate (kate), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like to hear examples tho of when it did happen tho, no matter how far back (but as recent as possible)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't listen to radio one at the moment seeing as its DJs all think they are totally the bun's muffins for being able prove they read nme and can deploy its "line" on "manufactured pop"

(i don't much mind when just *some* of them do this but IF YOU AREE THE GUY WHO IS PAID TO PLAY THE TOP 40 IN ORDER THEN YR CULTURAL COMMENTARY IS OUT OF ORDER DO YOU SEE etc)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

you could sense the gleeful schaudenfreude in Wes' voice when he announced Once True Voice had ONLY made number 10, heh

stevem (blueski), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:41 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, the last actual time I can remember hearing a song on the radio that had that HOLY F@CK, THAT'S AMAZING, WHAT IS THAT, IT'S THE BEST THING EVER!!! reaction was Bootylicious by Destiny's Child. I remember reading discussion about it on this board, but since I hadn't heard it, and had only this vague view of DC in terms of "I'll keep the TV on MTV when they're on" - but I'd formed a vaguely negative view of the song, mainly due to Dan's comments. I didn't know what it was when it came on the radio in the tourvan. It was just wonderful, gorgeous bootydrone with girly harmonies over the top - I.E. the best song ever written to directly appeal to Kate.

kate (kate), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the actual real answer to this may be BUSTED!!

but maybe that was on totp

mark s (mark s), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I was shocked into shame to discover Busted on ToTP were not that bad, in fact fairly enjoyable in a dumb bubblegum sort of way. Rockist bubblegum, mmmmmmmm...

kate (kate), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Busted are the last song I liked just from reading the lyrics!

I think my actual answer to this is "One More Time", which was 3 years ago but is also my favourite ever single so good work Radio.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it's been a long time, been a long time, been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time, but it was Bush, "Everything Zen"

Chris Clark (Chris Clark), Friday, 20 June 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

listened to radio 1 for the first time in months yesterday, thank god, the office Virgin Radio fascists were having a day off, and heard Wayne Wonder and Lumidee for the first times after reading much about them, and was instantly in love with both!

last year, this happened on a fairly regular basis. esp. trevor nelson + dreem teem shows, i would expect to hear something mindblowing every week really. i've hardly listened to any radio this year apart from office-classics stations :-(

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 20 June 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh Radio 1 can actually be good for this from time to time esp. late night and with people like Trevor Nelson playing Allen Anthony's 'Alright' which was a bit of a bomb the first time i heard it.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 20 June 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never been bowled over completely and utterly since I first heard The Rock by Delakota back in 1998 and went nutso. Every instance since then has seemed very pale and meaningless in comparison.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 June 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I was driving home from practice, which is about an hour's drive, and I was listening to the radio and a whole stream of great stuff came on (though I was switching from station to station, mainly from hip-hop station to classic rock) but I heard "The Magic Stick" by Lil' Kim and 50 Cent (which will soon get its own thread), "You Shook Me All Night Long," by AC/DC, "Lola" by the Kinks, "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin, that rap song called "Right Thur" by I don't know who, and a bunch of other fun stuff I forgot, and sure, none of it blew my mind, but it was great for driving over the speed limit down the highway at night.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 20 June 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i think mabye it was nore's "nothin".

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 20 June 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Most recently it was that newish Snoop/Neptunes song with the k-swinging beat. Pharrell's voice on that song : Pharrell's voice on NERD :: David Byrne's voice on Naked : David Byrne's voice on 77 (that is to say, it's getting better)

Most recently before that it was that Trick Daddy/Cee-Lo song I think is called "Trick Luv Da Kids", but honestly that was almost entirely cuz of Cee-Lo's singing on the hook; I've said before and I'll say again that he's got one GOD-DAMN FINE voice.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 20 June 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Bowling for Soup's "Girl All the Bad Guys Want"

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 20 June 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 20 June 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard a Raveonettes song, and it honestly sounded great. Argh!

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 20 June 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(But Raveonettes songs actually *do* sound good. Not particularly original, but they sound great, regardless.)

kate (kate), Friday, 20 June 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it really got me, all distant and so on... it mentioned the sun, do you know what track it is? Glad to hear someone else likes them

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

hearing it for the first time on the radio:

Donna Summer's "Love's Unkind",
a few months ago - WOAH!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lose Yourself"

Before that, "Work It"

(I know, can I be any more "Best of 2002" obvious? But it's true. And I just haven't been listening to the radio much this year, except for news -- a direct consequence of going broadband.)

JesseFox (JesseFox), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose "California Uber Alles", the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy version. Never heard it before, it's kick arse. Thought it was my man Chuck for a moment...

ham on rye (ham on rye), Friday, 20 June 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the local college station played "lover i dont have to love" by bright eyes and i loved it. i didnt know who bright eyes was. I thought that there was finally a truly hilarious catchy indie rock band out there. then i got the album and found out he was honestly that melodramatic. tsssk tsssk tsssk. i still think its a catchy fuckin song though

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

For the "float my boat" stuff, there's been The Bohman Brothers'
"Purely Practical" 7" a month or so ago; a few more years ago, there
was "Queen Of The Table Waters" by The Grifters, and "No More Was Needed To Inflame My Balls" by To Live And Shave In L.A.

Stephen Boyle (SBoyle), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Seven Nation Army"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 20 June 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fell In Love With A Girl" and "Pass The Courvoisier" I can't remember which came first. Radio fuckin' stinks.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 20 June 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Belle And Sebastien - Stars Of Track And Field
I've always avoided this band because the reviewers made
them sound like something I'd hate. But none of them
mentioned the Syd Barrett/Robyn Hitchcock similiarity,
which turned me on immensely.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Saturday, 21 June 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 21 June 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Saturday, 21 June 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Last year... La Lupita's "Ja Ja Ja" which is the greatest Mexican B-52s clone track ever.

Well, it might be the only one too.
