Cynicism

Read an interview w/Black Box Recorder and they kept brining up the phrase 'World Weary' in relation to lyrics. So, cynicism ...in lyrics, music, attitude? Does it serve a purpose? When is it too much? When is too personal? Who is a healthy cynic, who is hopeless, who is just horrible? Is the UK/EU better at cynicism vs US? When does it bleed into irony and vice versa?

bonus question: when has your own cynical attitude coincided? Clashed?

The only professional cynic who really bothers me is Luke Haines. Every time he opens his mouth I feel like saying "Change the record, you bitter old failure." The fact that he's ugly and his music sucks doesn't help.

Luke Haines is probably my favourite professional cynic. Hey, cold hearted misanthropy and glam guitars - got to be a good thing, right?

And releasing two solo albums in as many months is also a good thing. And writing a song about shooting Sarah Lucas, that's good too. And writing about being invited to the wedding of Valerie Solanas and Andy Warhol. Or calling your band Baader Meinhof. And hating Graham Coxen is definitely a good thing. As is liking Paul S Club.

Cynicism is as bad as naive optimism.

Cynicism irritates me. I think passionate idealism and bitter disillusionment are much more attractive.

And people quote the exact wrong Oscar Wilde sentences, all the time. I tell you, read the fairy tales.

Cynicism is as natural and necessary as paranoia. Saying there's no place for cynicism is similar to saying there's no place for happiness, no place for sadness, no place for humor, no place for idealistic optimism. Any of these attributes can be overused and handled horribly.

I shouldn't be cynical -- I should be hopeful -- about my country's president. I shouldn't be cynical -- I should be blindly accepting -- when a fast food restaurant tells me their french fries are 'healthy'. Right.

'saying there's no place for happiness, no place for sadness, no place for humor, no place for idealistic optimism...'
Welcome to the future. One day all these 'emotions' will be dimly remembered as childhood games as our species inexorably advances.

I've become an inveterate cynic and, to tell the truth, I wish I wasn't.

Was informed that the new Hornby book is about losing cynicism. Wonder if that's even possible? Can you be rebirthed out of cynicism or are you forever jaded? Has there been artists/groups starting off cynical and ended idealists?
