Is it gimmicky to name your blog after a song title?

Just out of curiousity how many of you have (or had) blogs whose title is a reference to an artist or some musical worth. I'm asking because I'm starting one and am considering naming mine after a song title.

a figurative gold cigar if you can tell me the song title for "In Review (Media Items Want To Be)"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 21 June 2003 07:17 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 21 June 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 21 June 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 21 June 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely too gimmicky.

J. Weiss (jweiss), Saturday, 21 June 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I did it, but then again I suck.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 21 June 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I did it and I'm still pleased with it 3 years later.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Saturday, 21 June 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you've already ventured so far into that territory when you get a Blog that it won't matter.

So just name it "Inalienable Dreamless" and write lengthy rants about how your parents are, like, toootal squares.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Saturday, 21 June 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I did it and I'm happy enough though I never update.

The Compass is a nice record by Dave Clarke.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 21 June 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine's just named after this random phrase I've had buzzing round in my head for about ten years. Only the phrase was INauspicious Fish.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 21 June 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

(disclaimer noted and accepted nick!!)

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 21 June 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It has to be either hyper obscure or hyper well known.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 21 June 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(the hipster's template)

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 21 June 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine's really obscure: I made it up myself!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 21 June 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

But mark s you wasn't meant to read that!

(Nick still gets boggled by the idea that anyone might actually read his blog.)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 21 June 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

when i get a blog, i'm calling it "MiSex"

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 June 2003 12:31 (twenty-two years ago)

That's niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice Tad.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 21 June 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

iSex

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 21 June 2003 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Will it yet be gimmicky to name your song after a blog title?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 June 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'm generally suspicious of trubute names. Especially for bands. Cash Bros, Scott 4, The Harry Smiths. As soon as I hear the name, I make less time to listen to them, and probably don't ever bother. But, a really well-picked reference grabs my loyalty. Maybe because and not despite my suspicion.

Alan Connor Jnr, Saturday, 21 June 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

hint: elvis costello.

keep trying.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 22 June 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

feh. you worry too much.
but what about naming your business after a song title?

lolita corpus (lolitacorpus), Sunday, 22 June 2003 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you've already ventured so far into that territory when you get a Blog that it won't matter.

Spot on!

I like it when people name *anything* after a song title, to be honest, but sometimes it's just too obvious to be anything but naff.

But when it works, it becomes a fun voyage of discovery for the reader: "I bet that's a song title, I wonder..." etc. Obviously the intermanet/googamagle has taken some of the fun out of this process, sadly.

I think it's more fun to take a song title and muck about with it a bit. My favourite example of this is the (clearly Prince-obsessed) on-site catering company who provide food for many UK-based TV dramas.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you LITTLE RED COURGETTE!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Just make sure it's a really really cool song.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't think it was gimmicky until Sterling turned it into a gimmick on this thread.

Oh god, I could have named mine "Tony's Themes." Ew!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Naming your blog after a Pixies song - trite or true?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I've Been Tired would be classic.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 June 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

NO appalling.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 23 June 2003 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, my blog's name sort of comes from the fact that my handle on another message board is Flux = ____, which is based on the Pavement song "Flux = Rad." So my blog's title sorta is from a song title, though I've been using the Flux name for so long now that it's actually more like Josh Blog, if you understand me. The subtitle is all mine, though. Eventually, I'll get a domain and change the name to something else I have in mind that does not come from music at all.

Within reason, naming a blog/zine after a song title is okay. It's kinda predictable, really. It's no crime, and I don't think it's gimmicky.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 23 June 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

c'mon people guess. what're you lazy or something? (haha anthony you never even knew it had anything to do with a song title till i mentioned it i bet)
