Genre Compression - Helping out THE DARKNESS

If it's old rock then it has to fit in as many of the tired moves, cliched structures etc as possible to make me want to buy the record/see the band - rather than just see one of the many local rock bands whose schtick hasn't changed in twenty years. I was watching THE DARKNESS on TV last night and thought, they're getting there, except their choruses suck. So the kidz will lap up it as 'new music'- but what about the elderly among us - what would they have to put on that debut album to make you forsake older rock records. What makes the perfect rock song/act ?

So the kidz will lap up

actually no, only the slebs lovin them ironically

Loved everything - the hats, the guitar solos, the incredibly bad falsetto - how brave! I like that they're 'musicians', - maybe the bad falsetto detracts a little from that. I like the mysteriousness of their intentions - are they ironic? Are they actual? Brilliant mish-mash of hippy clothing styles - they possess all the mystery the new image-conscious garage bands don't. Bastard, or rough diamond? Truly vain, or just incredibly drunk? etc etc.

Reminds me of, say, The Seeds too - people whose genius you can't quantify, and maybe you're just making it all up yourself, maybe they really sound like The Doors or, in this case, Radiohead and you actually only like them because they're obscure and silly and you identify with the underdog.

maryann (maryann), Saturday, 5 July 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

You are an idiot, Maryann. The Darkness might as well be sold as an accessory at Hennys. They are the Gaydad of 2003. The ultimate expression of empty and mediocre London.

retard, Saturday, 5 July 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

genius can't be quantified anyway?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 July 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Manny is OTM, as usual.

RickyT (RickyT), Saturday, 5 July 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

no '?' at the end of my post.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 5 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

'You are an idiot, Maryann' - I love that! Idiot has got to be one of the best words - I mean, forget anything in French! 'What am I, an idiot?' 'Thou idol of idiot worshippers!'

maryann (maryann), Sunday, 6 July 2003 08:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, 'quantifying genius' - it turns out I am not an idiot, but a moron. RickyT, thank you for using my nickname!

maryann (maryann), Sunday, 6 July 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

you are not a moron, of course.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 6 July 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to sound offended - (isn't that one of the funniest apologies you've heard today?) - it's just I cannot believe I used 'genius' and 'quantify' in the same sentence - you know. I don't beli-eve it.

maryann (maryann), Sunday, 6 July 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

no need to apologise but its funny. i haven't heard anything abt this band or whatever it is you're all talking abt. its 10 am on a sunday morning and I'm just mucking about.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 6 July 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Darkness are quite prepared to offer you rock before breakfast.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 6 July 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

And I am more than happy to accept it.

RickyT (RickyT), Sunday, 6 July 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh not MORE damn musicians

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 6 July 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Top album, yes.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I am deeply suspicious of all the love AND hate for them.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned you amaze me.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Astounding!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

They're without a doubt my favourite band at the moment. The minor detail that I've haven't heard a single note by them shouldn't blind you to their brilliance.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

The thing I don't get is Paul's argument above which he has repeated on a few other threads that the Darkness are somehow a "London" band... I think they have a much broader appeal than he credits them for - albeit perhaps not in a good way. This falls fair square into the "dozen albums a year" demographic for me, people who probably drag their reluctant missus along to Oasis concerts every year and still call Coldplay "indie"... I know that probably *sounds* condescending, but I hope the fact that I consider myself a fully paid up member of said demographic goes some way to redeeming my point of view...

one month passes...
What a bunch of insufferable snobs! Why do you champion The White Strokes and all that lot and then diss the Darkness for the same reasons you liked the former?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even know who here is supposed to be dissing the Darkness and championing the White Strokes.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate all those fuckers in the darkness, the white stripes and the strokes, but shot them not at all.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i always get the darkness mixed up with crack village

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 4 September 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

...with which Jim wins this week's "totally incongruous comparison" prize.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 4 September 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)
