Has anyone actually got this? I only know it as 'an embarrassing footnote'. I bet it's great.

um, squeeze named themselves after this one ... and squeeze was pretty good (for their first few records, anyway).

wasn't squeeze pretty much deleted from the back catalogue not soon after it was released? i never actually heard it ... but its reputation ain't so good. "the yule log," was what one acquaintance who has heard it called it.

I downloaded it somewhere along the way . . . and it's actually not that bad. It just isn't the Velvets in any way shape or form. If Doug Yule had just changed the name and moved to California, this would have been timely SoCal country rock. The songs aren't terribly memorable, but they're enthusiastically performed and pleasant enough.

Man that's so weird, I just suddenly got interested in this yesterday, and downloaded it. And now it shows up here.

Anyway, it's not nearly as bad as some people are saying. It's clearly a different band, a more generic one, some may say. But it has its charms. I don't see how anyone could HATE it. it's just not memorable. it wouldn't be an AMG one-star album if it was by, say, Boston or something.

I seem to recall saying basically the same thing in another thread, but I've got a copy of it. And yeah, what J said above.

doug yule WANTED to change the band's name given that he was embarrased to be billing yule + moe tucker (for a while, anyway) + some other dudes as "the velvet underground." but he was already booked on a (UK? european?) tour as "the velvet undergound," and the record company similarly put the screws to him so we have the fifth and by far most marginal "VU" album.

it's not a bad album, though.
