Why are there so many more huge dancehall acts (Sizzla, Warrior King, Capleton, Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Anthony B etc.) who do conscious stuff in comparison to hip hop? Sure, there's your Sean Pauls, but those guys seem much more attractive to the chart rap audience. I have my own ideas for an answer (or answers) to this question, but I'd be interested in hearing what you folks have to say.

i said on the other thread too. they ALSO do non-"conscious" stuff I think just like many rappers do both. there's not the DIVIDE is the thing coz there isn't the demographic which could base itself in that semi-priv position mainly maybe because jamaica as a whole is so depressed economically. (alt haha joke: its a black country so there's no white backpackers!)

additionally tho dancehall doesn't sitch itself as much against OTHER musics to the same degree? so the function served by R&B not to speak of popetc. has to find a single outlet?

Um, i thought it Millar. Seriously, so much of hip hop's construction *is* influenced by its existence within the context of western pop/rock music, which seems to replicate divisions b/w populist/intelligent at every level. The only western music dancehall takes heaps of cues from is (street) hip hop itself, so it's entirely possible that the necessary divisions we take for granted are just not an issue.
