quoted lines in rap rhymes

this is a list thread.

try to come up with a) the rap tracks that have had the most of their lines quoted in other songs (if it's just a verse you could do that too I guess), and b) the rap tracks whose lines have the highest possible proportion of lines which are quotes of other raps.

this is a list thread.

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 22 June 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

for (a) I mean things like 'big poppa', or no doubt all those old boring hip to the hop to the hippety hop ones.

I can't think of examples for (b) but I'm just curious.

I'm sure lots of stock rap phrases are derived from old lines somewhere, but I'm more interested in pretty close quotes. say, like, jay-z's 'I see some ladies tonight that should be ridin with jay-zaay' alluding to biggie's 'I seem some ladies tonight that should be havin' my babaaay'.

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 22 June 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ugly duckling 'do you know what i'm sayin' is 90% strung together lines from other rap songs

ron (ron), Sunday, 22 June 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

most quoted:

just rhymin with biz (esp bdk's verse)

ron (ron), Sunday, 22 June 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, that suffers a little for coherency, which I suppose like duh, but yes that's exactly what I'm talking about for (b).

and I know an obvious answer to (a) is 'the really really popular ones', but I kind of want to know down to the line.

'sucker mc's' deserves a nod for the beginning (two years ago, a friend of mine, asked me to say some MC rhymes...): brother lynch hung "friend of mine", CL smooth reprises them in 'down with the king' , schooly d "king of new york", snoop "hoop dreams", 2pac "got my mind made up", mos def at the end of "double trouble" on the roots' things fall apart...

(did some googling there, i admit)

ron (ron), Sunday, 22 June 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

good call on "just rhymin' with Biz", since pete rock made it a personal mission to insert cuts from that song in damn near every track he made. i wanna say that Nice & Smooth "funky for you" oughta be a candidate too, but that just could be the 'greg nice- effect'.

as far as non-rap songs, lynn collins "think" is the easy winner in my book...

regarding (b): (formerly Mad)Skillz has a song that is entirely made up of quotes from other songs, but i can't remember the name

naturalaw-dp, Sunday, 22 June 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ice-t "six in the morning" popping up in king tee 'act a fool'. also used in 'gin & juice', among others

ron (ron), Sunday, 22 June 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

naturalaw, in that area, i also nominate jimmy castor for the "what we gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time" thing

i would also like to take the opportunity to reassert how extremely important it was that fab 5 freddie said "aaah, this stuff is really fresh" (and that material put that effect on it.)

back to (a): la-di-da-di

ron (ron), Sunday, 22 June 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Tupac is the most bitten guy, probably.

Just 'Against All Odds':

Tupac - 'Payback, I knew you bitch niggas from way back / Witness me strapped with Macks, knew I wouldn't play that.'

Jay-Z on 'Some People Hate' - 'Nigga this is payback, I know you bitch niggas from way back / Niggas wanna clown but the pound it don't play that.'

Tupac - 'This little nigga named Nas thinks he live like me / Talkin' 'bout he left the hospital took five like me /
You living fantasies, nigga, I reject your deposit.'

50 Cent on 'Hail Mary - 'Little nigga named Ja think he live like me / Told 'em 'bout he left the hospital took 9 like me / You living fantasies, nigga, I be checking deposits.'

That Skillz one is called "Ya Favorite Joints". KRS-One had a b-side like that in '93 called "Rap vs. Hip-Hop".

I want to know how many variations there are on the "Rapper's Delight" "I don't mean to brag/I don't mean to boast..." line.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 22 June 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

when nas quotes 'the bridge is over'on 'destroy and rebuild'.

jay z quotes pac's 'me and my girlfriend' on the blueprint and blueprint 2 and also big's 'me and my bitch' on 'songcry'

... i'm confused. anyway, i love when pharoahe monch says "my dick rules everything around me, CREAM, get the ass"

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 22 June 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

He says "dick" instead of "cock" (which would actually fit the acronym)? Aw hell.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 23 June 2003 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ron (ron), Monday, 23 June 2003 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i just find it funny 'cause it reminds me of something you'd do in 4th grade, just blurt something out like that(if any 4th graders listen to Wu). and its pharoahe monch...

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Monday, 23 June 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

cypress hill has more jackings than these, but these are the only ones i can remember right now

-"how i could just kill a man" was used in:
redman's "time for some action"
epmd "cummin at cha"

-"hand on the pump" was used in:
redman/methodman's "the rockwilder"

naturalaw-dp, Monday, 23 June 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Slick Rick's "La Di Da Di" OWNZ this thread.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 23 June 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it just may. this thread got off track a bit, into "most sampled" or "most quoted" territory, rather than highest # of quoted lines in one song. i'm guilty

so what's the verdict on that jay-z biter or writer thing? I thought about 60-70%% were obvious homage quotes but some are buried a little too deep not to cause suspicion.

I think the "hotel / motel" line from "Rapper's Delight" has been quoted more than "two years ago a friend of mine..."

a bit late in correcting this, but Pharoahe says "my dick rules everything around me, DREAM", not "CREAM".

Slick Rick's "La Di Da Di" OWNZ this thread.

In agreeance, though the stickler in me says that's a Doug E. Fresh track. Our "MC Ricky D" was just a member of the Get Fresh Crew at that point... shortly to overtake Doug E.

My murderous techniques take over my body deliver my flows,
Watch my skills absorb the energy, my power grows,
Eminem doesn’t have skills it never shows,
He eats his mama’s pussy for lunch and recess,
Doesn’t stop there he begins a raping process,
Chop the body up and make a big fucked mess,
