Headphones. For walking around in.

My spring has gone, and thus my Sony W.Ear headphones are now almost useless (after three years of much love and work!) as the right earpiece is flapping around like a delirious seagull. I need some new headphones people, for use with a Sony MD Walkman, preferably in the £10-£30 region, not too bulky and with good sound comfortable yadda yadda. I've got medium-to-big ears (Emma says they are not big but I think she is lying). I'm thinking Koss or Sennheiser (I have some wicked Sennheiser's for indoor use).

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You should buy the Koss PortaPros. They are insanely comfortable, sound better than anything else that sells for <$50 (and sound better than a great a deal of products that go for >$50), have a lifetime warranty, and boast a crazyretro look that will get you stared at admiringly. I can't recommend them highly enough.

Check out www.head-fi.org for quality headphone suggestions. But if you're not careful, your budget will triple and you will find yourself with a new addiction.

(For the record, I don't think that the current head-fi portable fave [the Sony D66 Eggos, available only in Japan, and selling for $85-100] sound significant better than the PortaPros.)

I'm in the UK, btw.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I saw that... I'm not really up with the exchange-rate, though, so I didn't want to quote what would be innaccurate estimations of the UK price.

Sean M (Sean M), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I might love these.

I found those Koss one's for £40, which is a bit more than I wanted to spend, but I'll look into it.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

There are usually bargains to be found on the Koss. I wouldn't recommend those Senns. Good luck!

Sean M (Sean M), Monday, 23 June 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought the Senns mentioned above -- I think they sound v. nice considering how light & portable they are. A little on the flimsy side, maybe, but I'm happy with them.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 23 June 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

My (usually cheap-ass $20) headphones always short out after 6 months.
(I have 10 pairs lying around, half of them need jiggling before any sound comes out, and more than half of them are permanently stuck on "Mono")
Am I wasting my money on knockoffs of am I just too damned brutal on my 'phones? (I suspect the latter...I've went through 4 walkmen in 5 years. The weak-ass belt-clips are soooo damned fragile!)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 23 June 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

more of the same
Koss is good - either the PortaPros or the ones that cling to your ears, if you're after open type headphones.

jadrenos (jadrenos), Monday, 23 June 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that this thread was going to be about a really big set of headphones that you could walk around inside like you would walk around inside a room.

Folks, I think my mind's starting to go.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Monday, 23 June 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm the same custos. i've taken to asking for headphones every birthday and christmas.

gaz (gaz), Monday, 23 June 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I got those portapros and they're the ROX. Only drawback is that they look and feel very cheap, like they might break easily, but the bass is really really good and they do look pretty cool (although pretty much anyone looks like a dork walking about w/any kind of headphones on).

Dan I., Tuesday, 24 June 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I can really recommend the Sony MDR-V300s, I payed around $50 and they're very good. I use them with my Sony MD walkman as well.

Orange, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm the same custos. i've taken to asking for headphones every birthday and christmas.
Yeah...it's gotten so bad that every time I get a new pair of phones it blows my mind all over again to hear a CD in stereo!

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I just picked up a set of the Sennheiser PX100s in town (£29.99) and the initial reaction is blown mind. The balance across the treble, mid-range and bass is remarkable, the bass in particular very clear and defined for a (relatively) small and lightweight pair of 'phones. Plus they're obviously quite easily driven, as they're noticably louder than the Sony W.Ear ones (god how they seem flimsy, treble-y and weak in comparison to these). This is the third pair of Sennheiser's I've had over the years (I've got a pair of HD495s at home for the hi-fi late at night) and they've all been exemplary.

I have a feeling I'm going to be using my walkman a hell of a lot more than I have been.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Germans in quality-product shockah!

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

A week later and I've been using the walkman every day with them. They are the mutt's nuts, I can't emphasise that enough. I've also been using them to fall asleep to every night. A very good buy.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 30 June 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Just purchased a cheap-ass $7 pair.
I will post again when they break and We'll see how long they last.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 30 June 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a pair of those Sennheiser "for minidisc" closed-back cans in duty free and they're definitely quality, and much better than my last pair of Sennheisers (those dj ones with the plug at the headphone end so that if you trip over the lead you don't break the cans - nice idea, shame about the sound quality...).

However the thing that blew me away was testing out a few pairs of noise-cancelling headphones. Damn they're good. I'm just going to wait for the price to go down, though...

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a pair of Sennheiser HD490's. Well balanced, light, and comfortable. I use them for everything. I took them on a trip around the world and they're still in one piece. (more than I can say for my Pioneer 'phones that I took on my penultimate trip - the left earpiece snapped off)

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, shit. I broke 'em.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 30 June 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd have to have some pretty huge headphones in order to walk around in them.

</bad pun>

o. nate (onate), Monday, 30 June 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The bass on the Sennheisers is great, it's like someone kicking you in the ear. (I like that.)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Custos, did you seriously break them already?!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

No. No I didn't.
(I accidently ran over the cord with the wheel of a rolling chair, but they still work fine.)
I figured out that a good solid third of the mishaps happen in the kitchen...the drawers all have weird, ornate handles that snag the cord and either snap the earpiece or come close to severing the cord.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Answer = get a stereo for the kitchen so you don't need to wander aroudn in there with the walkman on?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Already do. But sometimes, as I'm bopping around in my walkman, I feel peckish and go into the kitchen for a snack.......
Better answer = replace the cheesy-looking knobs with something less frilly.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anybody use any brand of wireless headphones? These seem like they would be great for wearing around the house while playing music on my main stereo, but I'm hesitant to spring for a pair because the sound quality might not be good.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
I just bought the portapros from a site called ecost.com for $33 (about $20 cheaper than the suggested price) and there was free shipping. And for some amazing reason, they arrived a day after i ordered them. I highly recommend buying them off that site. Right now, I am listening the Disco Inferno 5 EPs comp that Ned sent me. And it sounds so great.

T. Weiss (Timmy), Thursday, 31 July 2003 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how w/those portapros you put this dinky little bare-bones-looking thing on your head and it's like "Where is all this bass coming from!?!?"
But the little hook on the right side does tend to dig into the side of one's head...

Dan I., Friday, 1 August 2003 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
where can i buy either koss or sennheisers in central london? it's about time i got some half-decent headphones.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 3 September 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

ok so my portapros are busted and will probably take 3-4 weeks to get back if experience is any indicator. but i am going away next week and would like some travel-friendly (ie sturdy, possibly foldable) cans. earbuds just do not work for me, my body rejects them like a bad transplant. they literally get spit out of my earholes. recommend me something??

il miglior Fabio (s1ocki), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

Just buy another pair of Portapros. They're cheap, and nothing else on the market comes close.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

ha

i was going to ask if anyone had any experience trying to use the koss warranty in the uk but i guess a response of "just buy another pair!" would indicate not

thomp, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

They're £16 on Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Koss-PortaPro-Quality-Sound-Stereophone/dp/B00001P4ZH/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1254235656&sr=8-1

It may cost less to send them abroad, but what's the point? The time saved is the issue I think.

Sickamous (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

kind of hard to find them in montreal, the one store i know that sells them sells 'em for like $80 - bastards

il miglior Fabio (s1ocki), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)

£20 (with postage) is kind of a lot to replace something that shouldn't have broken in the first place, you know?

thomp, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:34 (sixteen years ago)

well it would cost me $7 to get them fixed but i dont have the tiiiiime

just want a cheapish replacement

il miglior Fabio (s1ocki), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:40 (sixteen years ago)

I can't remember if I've mentioned it on one of these threads before or not, but if you want a really cheap pair of buds that you don't have to worry too much about losing - the Skullcandy buds are the best for their price I've managed to find yet.

Size-zero-brigade-embrace-token-chubby-chops (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:44 (sixteen years ago)

ya if my ears could handle buds i'd get something liek that.

il miglior Fabio (s1ocki), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

I got Sennheiser PX100's 2 years back and I have never, never looked back since. When these die, I'm replacing them with the exact same model. Love these to death, the sound is SO good.

VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

they wreck portapros imo

yellow card for favre (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

Portapros have a lifetime warranty though, don't they? Sennheiser is just two year. That said Sennheiser is to my ears a million times more comfy.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)

PX100s X100!

I'm on my second pair, first one got plenty of abuse.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 17:26 (sixteen years ago)

I love my PortaPros. Tried the Sennheisers but I didn't like the fit nor sound as much.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 17:34 (sixteen years ago)

Has anyone tried the Sennheiser HD201 or 202s? They look kind of robust, and I feel like having some with proper big bulgy pads, though it will make crossing the road rather more arduous

thomp, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 18:16 (sixteen years ago)

I'm in the US but I've used Koss's warranty many times to replace my KSC-35's (essentially Portapro's without the headband). $6 for shippinh & handling. I've tried lots of headphones but always come back to Koss.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, mark - there's nothing cheaper than the Kosses that's worth picking up, really.

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)

£20 (with postage) is kind of a lot to replace something that shouldn't have broken in the first place, you know?

but we should remember that in this scenario 20 is a made up number.
PORTAPROS FOREVER.

ps headphones just break all the time, they are only headphones.

peter falk's panther burns (schlump), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

Has anyone tried the Sennheiser HD201 or 202s

I have a pair of 201s in the office which get used to block out the background noise a couple of times a day; for the price you really cannot go wrong (about £10 when I bought 'em) - v comfortable, decent sound and super sturdy. If you'll be using them out and about bear in mind that they take a bit more to drive them than earbuds, so you might want to check that yr mp3 player or whatever goes loud enough (or get a cheap portable headphone amp).

Another aye for the Portapros here too, stupidly good vfm for the sound alone.

Bill A, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 20:11 (sixteen years ago)

"bear in mind that they take a bit more to drive them than earbuds"

bah, that was my fear. i don't know, i will probably end up rebuying portapros again even though it is throwing money away /:

actually i have had to start actually turning my cd player down lately, particularly with buds. but i think it's just stuff with over-loud snares. not sure.

thomp, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

but, like:

8/10 volume x larger resistance > 6/10 volume x smaller resistance,

probably, right?

(new 'you're gonna make yourself deaf' answers)
