ad libs

ok, another thing that has been largely given a bad name by Diddy, but i generally like the practice of rappers talking over the beat at the beginnings and sometimes ends of tracks. the best is sometimes during DJ sets when they'll just keep cuing up the intro over and over, so that the ad libs repeat until they take on this hypnotic quality, where they get stuck in your head, but they're not quite hooks.

so, i dunno, search and destroy.

"i dunno how to start" - nas

a few of my recent favorites:

Baby - "What Happened To That Boy?"
ranting some weird mostly blanked-out stuff about puzzle pieces...just so bizarre it has that aforementioned hypnotic quality

Freeway - "Flipsides"
Peedi Crakk is a star and this song is proof...the "oooooooh...clap for me mami AY" at the beginning is my favorite thing ever right now

Trina - "B R Right"
the best when it's unedited just because i think "I'm fuckin' niggas in the face" is the most hardcore thing i've ever heard any female rapper say...it just sounds so nasty...also this song rules for pairing an obligatory label shout-out (Slip'n'Slide) with the phrase "pussy wet"

"Prelude" by NWA. A whole assortment of intro bollocks, my fave consisting of a ragga type of guy shouting: "Because you're safe man yo're safe!"(or "def" I suppose) "Tell the silly pussyclaat world taht you're safe man! Tell them silly bumbaclaat mob and the silly pussyclaat world. Bop bop bop bop bop! Keep Babylon on da run, seen." And then it kicks into MC Ren asseverating: "The real niggaz is back..." Just an amazing moment.

oh yeah and Jay-Z owns this thread, he can't stop talking over the beat, especially the last couple years. sometimes it's inspired or really helps you feel a record from the start (I love the "talk to me maaaaan" bit on "Guess Who's Back?"), sometimes he's just really obnoxious and silly ("gotta get those Scooby Doo's...those Scooby Doo's...those are shoes, by the way").

There's some A Tribe Called Quest song, from the 2nd or third record, where Phife is talking about how he wants his vocals turned up, and he keeps saying "My vocals."

It's not hip hop and maybe it's not a true ad lib, but I love at the end of a Jonathan Fire Eater song, when the singer says, "Jonathan Fire Eater walking home from schol, why why why don't you come carry my books little girl." And then he does this high pitched, shuddering kind of squeal/moan. It's AWESOME
