definitely 10, maybe 5 years ago, Wu were probably pretty representative of the underground...but I think these days Eminem fits that mold more, he possess a lot of the attributes that I can't stand about most indie MC's.

I might go with Jurassic 5.

yeah for real like i said in my cage thread em was SO CLOSE to becoming one of those regrettable underground emo white mcs but instead chose the correct path making songs with dre and snoop and xzibit (omg are the liks the bridge between mainstream and nonrap?? xzibit --> liks --> madlib -->boring stones throw barely-hiphop fat jon jazzbeat stuff!!!)

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

theres a lot of contenders for this actually; nas, big, jay, all of them got some backpacker defenders... i guess nobodys wrong ALL the time ha ha!!

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bridge is Over The Bridge is Over

(barely hip hop??? you're a moron)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't trife, like, funny or something once?

Xzibit was better before he got hooked up with Dre. I'm not sure what that means in relation to this thread, but, yeah.

Brian the Snorf, Tuesday, 24 June 2003 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

wasnt ilm readable once?

trife (simon_tr), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

how long have you been posting here?

your null fame (yournullfame), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 07:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Spooks? Hahaha!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The correct answer is Monch, anyway. Jay-Z's backpacker defenders are kinda like those Jewish tailors that made suits for the Third Reich.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the reason dom hates eminem = IT IS LIKE LOOKING IN A MIRROR!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ps i heart dom btw

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

in fact i heart everyone

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

On the music round on University Challenge last night, I got that it was "The Real Slim Shady" in under a second.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is the Kevin Bacon of rap, anyway? The seven degrees of... Busta Rhymes?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

you'd only need like 2 steps to get from busta to anyone else! it's no fun at all!

pete b. (pete b.), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a good call. Can't imagine Def Jux without Wu.

Who else? Beastie Boys! Bridging gap between punk, frat rock and mainstream hip-hop. Come to think of it, 15 years ago Beasties would have curated a great All Tomorrows Parties or Meltdown.

phil jones (interstar), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I see Wu and the Beasties as a bridge between hip-hop and rock first and a bridge between mainstream/undie as a result. They were the acts that it was "OK" for punks and rockers to listen to in high school, without betraying their tribe.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Jay-Z's backpacker defenders are kinda like those Jewish tailors that made suits for the Third Reich.

Oh now that is the WORST ILM ANALOGY EVER.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

and yet...I LOVE it. I officially love all Jay-z=Hitler analogies.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

If Jay-Z gets to call himself Jehovah, I can't see how this metaphor is in poor taste.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how to sew, for real

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Isaac Hayes called himself the Black Moses of soul; I see no real problem here Miccio.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

that soap you're using smells like El-P, doesn't it, Nate?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, it's got Bill O'Reilly's rancid musk all over it

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

you would let Jay-Z kill us all! I hef no son!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah yeah ha ha that wacky Holocaust

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 24 June 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)
