Um, like george Martin cut up the tape's and turned them backwards, I've always (well, since I was 15) been intrigued by what would happen if you cut the tape into little squares and re-assembled it at 90 degrees so that it played sideways, as it were.

colin, Xii is likely written in MAX/MSP/Jitter. this is the starting
point for building and learning about the tools in your wishlist
it is $$$ though. as an alternative, supercollider. it's recently been open sourced, not as featured but growing quickly.
