I took a Stella-fuelled trip down memory lane last night, digging out some albums and singles I hadn't listened to in years. The Wedding Present sounded a lot better than I expected them to after all these years. The first McCarthy album was just as good as I remembered it. I played a few Sarah singles and it was a fairly even split between the truly awful and the truly sublime. "Bird Dog" by the Verlaines, the last two tracks in particular, had definitely stood the test of time.

Then I stuck on "Poised Over the Pause Button" by This Poison, a really great single with four fantastic tracks on it. As I listened to it, I realised that out of 6 billion people on the planet, I was almost certainly the only person listening to This Poison at that moment. Then I began to think about how far back in time you'd have to go before someone else in the world had listened to that single... days, weeks, months...??

Which made my head hurt. Am i turning into a massive hippy? I turned down a free Glastonbury ticket if I can use that in mitigation... maybe I just need to lay off the Stella...

...or perhaps I'm being totally arrogant and presumptious? maybe lots of people were listening to that song last night? I'd like to think so. That would make my head hurt too though.

i'm getting some stella in then - this poison! - yes from perth (sco!) - were completely brilliant, while mccarthy's legend status is also perfectly justified.

i often think what you thought too - you listen to music that even the bands who made it have probably forgotten about and just got on with their lives, but "poised over the pause button" is indeed ace. i think probably with most of these bands there are a few dozen - maybe a hundred - people who still listen to those tunes regularly ? would be great to know.

I listened to it a month or so ago.Wasn't that a compilation of the two 7's on a 12" though or is my brain tired ? Gedge affiliates right ?

Yeah, as Kieron says This Poison were from Perth... actually, in a weird link I remember they were billed to support McCarthy in Edinburgh (I think in the end it was cancelled cos McCarthy didn't turn up though happily I did later see them a couple of times, once supporting the Chills which was fantastic...).

I have heard of the Hook & Pull Gang, but couldn't name any songs... real "Rock on Scotland"/"Beat Patrol" faves, right?!

And yeah, thinking about it it was two 7"s on a 12", on Reception Records run by the Wedding Present I think. That happened quite a lot back then, I'm not sure why, the two sevens on a twelve thing... as far as I know they never did an album or anything.

Some day there'll be a "Pebbles" style compilation with all this stuff on it... I expect This Poison and the Prayers to be heading up the tracklisting...
